Whaaaat didn't expect this show. For some reason I thought Andor won the poll.

Welcome to my hyper fixation for the past year! Palace intrigue, Sherlock style mysteries and just a smidge of romance. It has the whole package for me. Can’t wait for you to witness the greatness of Maomao and her desperately trying to keep a low profile … we’ll see how well she does πŸ˜…

Sacha

My impression from the first episode was that Maomao herself has a lot in common with Frieren the character, at least at a glance. - medicine / magic fixation - humble, not flashy or showy (not impressed by vanity metrics) - uninterested in romantic advances (at first) - seemingly detached or cold on the surface, hiding a depth of emotion and care for others

Apothecary Diaries and Andor both being top contenders was painful for me, as they are literally my top 2 shows this year, (I’ve fallen behind on Orb but that one would probably be up there as well). I hope Andor is still in the running for a potential future show, as I really believe it’s something special. Funny you mention Frieren, as I see these shows being compared quite a bit. I actually found out about it from a comment recommending it to someone else after finishing Frieren. Not that they’re all that similar, but I think as it goes on you’ll be able to see why it’s so commonly recommended to people after watching Frieren.

Oh, speaking of voice actors, though, Maomao is played by Aoi Yuuki, who also voiced Yuzuru in A Silent Voice (which is where I recognized the voice from). What I completely *couldn't* realize, though, is that she's the same voice actor as Froppy in MHA and Capella (Archbishop of Lust) in Re:Zero, which is pretty wildly different.

A few language nerd notes: - Apothecary is a good translation of kusuri-ya ("ye olde medicine shoppe", as opposed to the modern word for pharmacy, yakkyoku). "Diaries" is a very ... interesting? possibly good? ... translation of hitori-goto. Hitorigoto is the word for "things you say to yourself / monologuing." Basically, Maomao likes to talk to herself, although "hitorigoto" is written in hiragana only in the title, which usually means they want it to remain ambiguous and open to multiple interpretations. (Other possible, less likely meanings of 'hitorigoto' would be 'the things someone does by oneself,' or even very olde-timey 'accomplishments') - The description of eunuchs is even more brutal in the Japanese. Maomao calls them "formerly male" (元男性, moto-dansei), which I thought was pretty rough. 8:30 "Her voice sounds really familiar." --> I was 100% convinced that it was Yukiyo Fujii, the voice actor who plays Mimi in Re:Zero, but I was also 100% wrong. It's Misaki Kuno, and the only thing I think could connect her to you is she played Sophia in Persona 5. 18:25 This series occasionally, but only occasionally, uses very old Japanese to make the dialog sound more courtly. (As in, "what hast thou done" kind of speech) Jinshi knocks on the door and says "kanomono-o tsurete-mairimashita" and then, I don't know why, but I thought it was pretty funny how the English subtitles just can't be fucked at all and are just "I brought her."

Peak. This show is really fantastic. I started reading the source novels after S1 ended, and man it’s just such a great story, really well told. Plus Maomao is just great. Excited to watch along with this one, I haven’t actually seen S2 yet since I read the stuff it covers, but now I can just watch along!

Vali Sippola

Her sincere "thank God" was a big moment this episode

Alex G

I really didn't know much about it but I'm surprised by the setting and style. And also the genre! Seems like a combination of mystery plus royal court navigating πŸ˜‚

AND SO IT BEGINS! Here, we meet our MC, Maomao. Maomao is an apothecary and works alongside her father. As shown in this episode, she tends to be avoidant towards things that aren't in her personal interests. Not so much out of spite or disdain, but more out of self-preservation and to avoid drawing attention to herself. As shown in just this first episode, you've been taught to be observant and pay attention to details that may not be spoken, but shown. As for the white face powder, I believe it's confirmed to have lead in it and the cause of death would be lead poisoning. If you go back in the episode when Maomao is summoned along with the other girls, you see her skirt has had some stitching done and the eunuch in the room takes notice of it(not Jinshi, but the one with him). For a first episode, what were your expectations about this show and how have they changed or stayed the same after watching episode 1? As for this anime's setting, it's based on a somewhat imperialist China time period, what with there being an emperor and consorts. Also, as of this point in the show, Maomao is confirmed to be 17. Be prepared for the show's pacing to be going a bit fast. A LOT happens in singular episodes, so feel free to take your time and take in the moments in episodes when you're watching. And of course, because I'm me, this anime, like Frieren, is generally well received with both the EN and JP performances. (I watched it in JP first, rewatched in EN, both solid imo). Apologies for the rambling, but I appreciate anybody who took the time to read it all the way through, you're awesome and have a wonderful day/night!

TrueAuraGuardian

Lead based whitening creams and cosmetics have been used for thousands of years - as far back as 3500 BC and were still used widely in Western civilisations among the upper class in the 19th century. Basically any culture that valued a pale complexion used them. They've been recognized as poison/toxic as far back as the 17th century. Lots of very bad symptoms for lead poisoning including fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, memory loss, irritability, mood/personality changes, headaches, numbness infertility and miscarriages. It's pretty bad stuff

Guy

The Apothecary Diaries is a series i in all honesty wouldnt have thought i wouldve enjoyed but these first few episodes hooked me immidietly and im excited to see you're reactions to it. Maomao is an interesting protagonist because at first glance it may seem she doesnt care much at all but even when she doesnt want to get involved we see her still step up to try and help.

Snor

Ah Apothecaries Diary. Check one off my need you to watch Bucket List for lowkey good series, including Violet Evergarden. Now to patiently wait for Eighty Six and Castlevania somedayπŸ‘Œ

KrimzonHawka

I think about this here sometimes with plastic surgery

Alex G

I was thinking how dumb it is to ruin your health to look pretty, as it seems the Brothel Ladies knew it was poison. Maomao also knew and said "They tried to trade their life for beauty" Then I remembered steroids are still prevalent now and basically serve the same function lol

Galleon

I have been waiting for this!! I am excited!!!

This is gonna be an all timer
