Re: Zero 3x11 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Re: Zero 3x11, This is not the greatest song in the world, no. This is just a tribute. It makes Priscilla's eight husbands cry in sword.

This is an episode that I can confidently say elevated the source material with its portrayal of Lilliana’s backstory and how it ties to the themes of this season!! Lilliana was one of the more controversial characters of this arc in the novels, primarily because she was the narrator of the handful of chapters that made up this episode, and boy did a lot of people hate her POV in the novel due to her hyper energy. I wouldn’t say I had anything against Lilliana personally, but I must admit that I was VERY surprised at the amount of effort and budget they allotted for this episode. And it was a pleasant surprise!! I never thought I’d be this moved by Lilliana’s narration of her own personal journey, and the incredible directing of this episode really did well to showcase how her dynamics tie together with the overarching themes of Season 3. Now, I do wish the resources poured into this episode didn’t come at the cost of taking away budget from the polite, reasonable, sound, and generous Regulus Corneas — but thank you White Fox nonetheless! The decision to put this much effort into a fight that was considerably less fan favorited in comparison to Regulus’s, is a bold move that at the very least — achieved emotions that previously shouldn’t have been possible with Lilliana’s (lack of) popularity. For that, I really think White Fox did an unexpectedly commendable thing. Poor Regulus though, man…

Listening to Alex's discussions, I kind of went on a ride myself. A summary of the train of thought: 1) Yes, knowledge of logical fallacies, how to identify them and how to defend against them, would be massively useful and if a critical mass of people had that knowledge, I'm convinced our society would be unrecognizably better. 2) But many of them rely on higher order logic. It's not simply apparent to everyone if you just tell them what it is. It requires really internalizing knowledge of conceptual relationships, and that in turn probably requires a decent level of literacy or at least language faculty. Broad, societal knowledge doesn't just spontaneously grow naturally; it has to be cultivated if it has any hopes of existing. 3) Sincere believers in the liberating power or even just the anti-authoritarian necessity of public education would probably fight such that all people had access to those ideas, but 4) That probably means being swept up in movements that oppress just as much as they free people. In the end, well meaning educators probably unwittingly end up imposing authoritarian frameworks and propaganda as much as if not more than the mental tools needed to fight them, and it's hard to turn back specifically because *some* type of widespread learning theough intentional study is so necessary.... [continue in this cycle for a while] ..... Anyway..... the song may have only been a tribute to the best song in the world, but I was genuinely impressed with the singer.

Also just as an additional thing, love the direction and music for this ep. Also as you mentioned, sound design is on point. It’s honestly one of my favorite parts about Re: Zeros anime and the adaptation, and something I always look forward to paying attention too whenever a new season comes. I honestly think Re: Zero has the best/my personal favorite sound design in all of anime. It’s pretty special I think.

Let’s go! I love this episode a lot. As someone who was basically put down the path of a musician as a kid due to a mix of innate talent and family, and only truly finding my love for music later in life, this episode just hits right for me. (As one quick thing, there was an after credits scene after this ep that you missed out on. Could prolly just watch it before the beginning of next weeks ep.) I loved all your thoughts on what Sirius represents thematically and metaphorically and what the antidote to her “wrath” is. She’s such a cool antagonist, and more than a lot of the other archbishops, she can really appeal to even the people with the best of hearts. (Also yeah, if someone gets thrown into water, they’re never dead lmao) I love love love Liliana’s backstory, it personally connected with me a lot, but particularly the part where she’s considering what it means to be a hero, and how she’s only repeating the stories of those ancient heroes. This arc is called “The Stars What Make History” and this arc deals with both of those things quite a bit. Reid, the Master Swordsman, is obviously part of the Astrea line, and Flugel as well was mentioned. We’ve heard both of these names before. Garfiel has mentioned Reid multiple times, in S2 and 3, but the relation to the master swordsman title wasn’t apparent till now. Adds a little extra to Garf and Reinhards interactions to know that Reid is one of Garf’s personal heroes. And Flugel had been mentioned many times, by Petelgeuse in Emilia’s Trial, and it’s also the namesake of the tree that was used to crush the White Whale. I love the concept of “The World” being song and how it connects to Priscilla’s view of the world being her garden. This idea that just because something has been said before, means you have no original thoughts, or that just because something isn’t right in front of you, doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate it, isnt true imo. Because you are the world. Sirius sees everyone as these separate entities that need to be joined in order to find the truth of love. But it already exists. You just have to be looking at it from the right place. I might be getting into the weeds with that one, but whatever. Can’t formulate my full thoughts on this concept in a comment lmao. And this idea of standing on the shoulders of others before is such a prevalent theme for this whole season/arc. For our whole cast. This idea of heroes and our own personal histories being brought forward into the present is sooo awesome imo. Like a play on a stage, like Priscilla called it. I’ll have a section on this idea for every upcoming episode, as this gets represented in different ways depending on the character. The idea that our strength is found together and in unity is different than what Sirius represents. It’s because of how all of our cast are different from one another that they’ve been able to stand together against these archbishops at all. These powerful people that haven’t ever had to think about losing. Especially Regulus, a man who is wholly satisfied, wholly independent, quite literally cut off from the world by his power. Overall, I just love this ep. It’s so emblematic of the themes of this arc. I loved the deep dive you did on some of its contents. Awesome thoughts as always, and I’m super hyped for next week. Two of my fav episodes of the whole series.
