Ah, now I get how Regulus's adversarial relationship with Greed works. He claims he doesn't want for anything because he's perfect, and he hates anybody who wants anything from him. Regulus is always self-satisfied, and therefore the least greedy, and yet he gets no appreciation from others. He asks for nothing but his most basic rights and normal human dignity, and yet people are always listing things they want, like for him to stop choking them! Truly greedy. I'm usually a fan of the show's willingness to be cryptic and avoid lore dumps that don't serve a storytelling purpose, but the choice not to explain Regulus's quirk is odd. The different ways they use this power are really fun and clever. I especially like how, because he can't change inertia, it's easy to catch him off guard and send him comically flying away before he can react. What a klutz! Since they apparently also made him more comical, I wonder if de-emphasizing his power was part of a decision to knock down his cool factor in general, hammering home his patheticness to head off the usual "Regulus did nothing wrong" crowd. He's really not a character you want to see win the popularity poll.

2025-05-03 18:59:35 +0000 UTCThanks for the explanation. The phasing through the ice being the clue to his abilities might have made more sense than it being the conversation between Subaru and Emilia about what happened. It's also funny that Regulus so palpably wants to hear Subaru talk about him 😂 Since I couldn't follow the stars - mythology - he's made of nothing at all logic, I legit was wondering if he wasn't just an attention monster haha

2025-05-03 09:10:52 +0000 UTCI'm grateful for the timing of watching Sirius in this show. I do think (hope) that it's possible to do it all: engage with the world, maintain a healthy inner composition, be good to others... It just takes some effort, which is fine. And maybe most importantly just having the knowledge of the fact that we don't HAVE to adopt the same reactions others have even if it's widespread.

2025-05-03 08:46:30 +0000 UTCThe clash against Regulus is probably the most anticipated event of the arc, and it was pretty hyped up in the anime, too. And while I think they went all out of this season, this encounter in particular was pretty watered down in the anime -- like it was a completely different fight in the novels. This is partly due to inevitable cut content, but also a decision in the directing of the showdown in which the director sorta changed Regulus's character for a different direction in presentation for the anime. He is less nuanced and portrayed more cartoonishly with exaggerated expressions, and a lot of the ways he fought back during the battle was removed -- leading to the overall intensity of the fight being reduced pretty significantly IMO. I would recommend watching a cut content video on this specifically if you're interested, as this was a straight up change that won't be coming back later into the show, and because the way a lot of the things played out was just so different in the original, man... But if you want a summary of what was different to give you an idea, I can try my best to put it into words. Primarily, the fight felt a lot more even in the novels. Regulus basically spent the entirety of this fight being thrown around by Reinhard, but there was actually a specific point in the original fight where he suddenly did something to make it so that he wasn't even budging from the hits Reinhard was throwing at him anymore. This was reminiscent of the way he tanked Betelgeuse's hits or Crusch's wind blade in Season 2, so I'm confused as to why they chose to not show that here. Regulus felt like an invincible punching bag this episode, but he really ceased being one pretty early into the original fight. Regulus would also then go on to literally EXPLODE Reinhard's leg by manipulating the air in front of him using his breath, which again is similar to what he used against Rem at the start of Season 2, so I'm also confused as to why they changed it. This damage taken by Reinhard was actually what led him to get kicked by Regulus and sent flying through multiple buildings, instead of the way he blocked a hit for Subaru in the anime. It was during this scene where we actually go more clues as to how Regulus's powers worked. Though we didn't see it in the anime, Emilia had actually summoned several walls of ice to slow Reinhard down, none of which worked as he would instead fly right through, leaving this unnatural human-shaped gap behind him. Suggesting that Regulus has manipulated the state of his body so that he can phase through things perfectly, which we later find out to actually be stopping time for himself. Later, when Regulus tried to dump weaponized water on Subaru and Emilia. It missed because they took off a good bit before he started his attack, and so Subaru was able to use his whip to propel themselves even further, barely managing to escape unscathed while the buildings nearby was utterly demolished. The anime had a REALLY weird direction for this scene as it literally looked like they were next to Regulus when he dumped water on them, and barely ran 10 feet away before it came crashing down — yet they somehow escaped unscathed. Regulus's chase would then continue far longer than what we saw in the anime, since even after leveling out on even ground, Regulus would continue his pursuit while Subaru and Emilia would continue to run away. How did Emilia and Subaru maintain their momentum while not sliding downward anymore? Well, that was due to an incredible display of finesse from Subaru's skills with the whip. You see, Emilia would have to create projectiles of ice, which would then serve as self-propelled rockets for Subaru to latch onto. As soon as the icicle they were attached to started to lose velocity, Emilia would make another one, and then Subaru would latch onto that. So, altogether, it was a pretty difficult game of target switching since not only did Subaru have to accurately land his whip while they were moving, but there was also a very small window in which the switch was possible. Plus, with the added speed making it impossible for the lesser spirits to keep freezing the water, Subaru and Emilia were essentially water skiing now. Any mistake would send them headfirst into the canal. It was during this chase that an interesting observation was made. Whenever Emilia would try to disrupt Regulus with a massive barricade of ice, he would just glide through it like it wasn't even there. A human-shaped tunnel would form in whatever she dropped on him. This was a peculiar interaction that got Subaru thinking, because when Reinhard had gotten hit back here, the gaps that formed in Emilia's ice walls were human-shaped too. They didn’t shatter like how they normally would had they been hit with something forceful; they kind of just made space in a way that was completely unnatural. So, whatever move Regulus used to send Reinhard flying here is the same move he used now to make clear whatever was blocking him. It was an essential clue that helped Subaru to figure out Regulus' power later. As for why Regulus seems to be holding back against Subaru as he's taunting him... it's because Regulus is pretty much like Homelander. He craves for others' approval and needs to be the center of attention always. He constantly speaks of being free of desire and brags of being perfectly fulfilled, but even with all that, he can't live without other people constantly affirming his worth. It’s for that reason he projects his insecurities and values on everyone else. He needs to feel superior to them because he’s narrow-minded and petty like that. He doesn’t want to boast about winning because he’s strong. He wants to force everyone to lose because he’s afraid of himself. So the only satisfaction he gets is from that physical and verbal proof he's better than someone. To not break his opponent’s spirit in its entirety, well, that just wasn’t good enough to affirm his superiority. And yeah, that's about the summary for much of the technical stuff that was changed during the fight. There's a lot more stuff on Regulus's philosophy and behavior that was also cut, but I feel like that's just the inevitability reality of a novel to anime adaptation, so I won't really dive into his nuances in the source material. But I thought it worth pointing out at least much of the intensity that Regulus was able to offer in the original fight that was kinda removed in the process of bringing the scenes to life. I understand some of the larger scale stuff as there are budget limits to the adaptation of any sequence, after all. But I think a lot of the changes that actually felt weird didn’t even have anything do with the budget constraint, but came down to a weird direction of the fight more than anything (like the water attack scene). Their exchange was less grounded than the way things played out in the novels, and felt less grounded than the intensity that ReZero was known to offer. And really a lot of it had to do with how Regulus's portrayal this episode felt quite different than his Season 2 moments. But, Season 3 is still pretty great, and I'm glad we finally got it! Thanks for the reactions, have a good weekend!

2025-05-03 04:24:19 +0000 UTCPeak Zero Day!! This episode is one of my favorites this season. I find Regules power quite interesting i love how he is immume to physical damage but cant take any emotional damage xD bro's built like a broken record. I really like how Emilia also isnt afraid to call him out despite him being an extremely dangerous foe Great reaction and commentary, excited for your next rezero reactions. Also wanna get around to watching Vigilantes so i can watch your reactions.

2025-05-03 03:48:45 +0000 UTCI absolutely love Reinhard's and Emilia's combat in this episode, combined with all the different strategies Subaru comes up with. It's interesting to note, that despite having such an OP ability, Regulus is really not a great fighter at all. We know he's at least 100+ years old, but he's stayed completely stagnant all this time. Which makes sense if he sees himself as the most perfect most complete human, with no need for anything extra. Seeing Subaru troll his enemies is always a pleasure. I also find it hard to not get swept up in the emotional element of the social and societal environment, especially when it feels like you HAVE to a an emotional response one way or another, even if that's counterintuitive to the topic at hand. Great reaction, Priscilla is cute!

2025-05-03 03:21:21 +0000 UTCTwo things today. 1. Al basically had 4 lines this whole episode but arguably 2 of them are the most instresting the whole episode. "I'm in a bad mood today. So youd better get outta here before I die," Shouldn't Al be saying you better get out of here before YOU die to Lust? How is Al dying a bad thing for her and a threat? Does something happen when Al dies 🤔 things to think about along with the pile of Mysteries about Al. 2. I belive is season 1 early on Subaru mentions he is named after a star to Emilia or about how the starts look the same as home (earth) but called diffrent things here. He also mentioned to be into stars strange how the stars have diffrent names yet the bishops are named after earth stars unless it's just the astrology symbol with diffrent names like Orion (I forget tbh).

2025-05-03 02:07:27 +0000 UTCI'm also struggling with that precarious balance on the one hand with the desire to engage in the world or local environment and avoid being ignorant, and on the other with the need to maintain some semblance of composure. On a personal note, I want to do my job well, but it's safe to say that it's not a great time to be in academia in the US. I don't want to get worked up into a hysterical panic, much less pull students or other people into an crisis where they wonder if their finances or grants or programs will exist or not. I don't know what the appropriate response is, and it might not be spending time here 😅, but I'm grateful for the perspective and thoughts. And more on topic with the episode, I think it's interesting how Regulus is so ineffective with his abilities. He has all this power, but very rarely needs to use any of it. If he had been focused on efficiently killing people, I think he would have already, but that's just not possible for him. (Last, sorry for the helpless nerd comment 🤓, but I don't think any astronomy-related names we've had so far are from the Solar System itself. They're all within about 500-lightyears-ish of us somewhere in the Milky Way, but not "local" to our star.)

2025-05-03 01:45:11 +0000 UTCLet’s go! I absolutely love this episode. One of my favorites this season. Action and revelations. Love all the Capella stuff at the start. She’s such a scary villain. Anastasia also showing some unexpected battle prowess, and Aldebaran being suspicious… I absolutely adore the fight between Regulus, Reinhard, Subaru and Emilia. I remember reading it and wondering how they’d bring it to life, and I think they did it wonderfully. It feels so Hollywood. The chase scenes, the scrappy nature of everything, tossing Regulus around, it just made me think of a Star Wars or Indiana Jones setpiece. I mean Subaru’s got the whip for it. I could imagine a John Williams score playing over some of the scenes. I just adore it. Also Subaru saying he was called the Ice Princess as a kid. Surely this isn’t an important part of him or his past at all given that he was so eager to talk about it… 🤔 I also love the bit we get to see of Priscilla VS Sirius. Sirius theme playing with the discordant strings, the firey ambiance, I love the vibes. Feels like a stage play. Also just getting to see Priscilla go off is awesome. I love Sirius’ dialogue in this whole exchange, treating the battle as not a physical trial, but one of the heart. Also as a novel reader, seeing Sirius bring up those specific names to get a rise out of Priscilla was a treat the first time. Gets me so hyped for future arcs to be animated. And finally, I get to talk about stars. One of the most important parts of Re: Zero. Regulus power itself being connected to the name of a star is clearly not just the author referencing something. It’s way too specific for that. The power mirrors the real world myths and legends surrounding the star. And this was actually foreshadowed allll the way back in the Memory Snow OVA, where we learn about Subaru’s obsession with stars and their names, his name being one. Pleiades, the latin translation of Subaru, also known as the seven sisters. Sound familiar? This will get expanded upon in upcoming eps, so I won’t say too much more, but if you’re curious, looking up some of our characters names and seeing if they’re connected to a star is super interesting. It expands the world a lot, because unlike some shows where naming convention is just for fun, there are actual, mechanical things that are affected by these real-life myths and legends, it raises a lot of questions about this world. And finally, Regulus. His contrast with Subaru, with the latter standing above him in frame, even if he can’t match his power. The ability to stop time for your own body. The implications of this being his power are really awesome from a characterization standpoint. It’s not that he’s “invincible” in the traditional sense, but that he’s fundamentally unaffected by outside forces. It’s why his clothes never get wet, and he’s always pristine and white. He says earlier when Emilia is talking to him “I am entirely fulfilled, there is no more or less for me.” It’s fitting that the man cut off from everything was contrasted at the start of this season with Sirius, a woman who wants to connect everyone. I have a ton more to say about Regulus, but I’ll save that for the next couple episodes. Just some things to think about with this new revelation about him, and how it informs his character. Awesome thoughts as always, super hyped for the next episodes. It’s all gas no brakes for real now.
