I think the flashbacks it shows when Al tells Subaru that his losses are not gonna be just his own anymore and he is gonna have to shoulder everyone's else burden are quite deliberate . - The first death alongside Emilia -> Emilia telling him her real name when they defeat Elsa - Jumping off a cliff when Rem died to the curse -> having conversation with Rem after the dog in the forest is beaten - Holding Rem's corpse as Puck freezes everything solid -> having conversation with Emilila after the Whale and the Sloth are beaten - Subaru killing himself as Witch of Envy devours the Sanctuary -> breaking out of the Library with Beatrice and facing the Rabbit It's the moments he utterly lost, and everyone else suffered alongside him ... followed by the moments he was able to turn it around and win. Hence the "That's business like usually then", his loses were never just his own.

Subaru's speech in this ep is like the third scene in this anime that I felt like was written for me specifically just due to how much I resonated with it. The other two being From Zero and Parent and Child. This show has helped me with my depression so much. No matter how much of a screw-up I might feel like, the fact is I'm still trying, and I'll keep trying, and that in itself is something I should be proud of. Same with Subaru. He's powerless yes, but that is what enables him to inspire others. He wouldn't be as inspirational if he was OP.

Thankfully I think that comes through to a decent degree in this version as well. They encourage him along those points and they're kind of standing around waiting nervously as he bumbled around at the beginning. One of my favorite details of the speech is that he tacked that on at the end after already having reached people genuinely without appeal to authority. And that really seals the deal

Part of me was wondering if Al wasn't doing it deliberately to get Subaru to do it but be more focused. But I think it was just an honest objection

Garfiel is really going through it. Half of the words he said this episode were "taisho" That is all from me, haha. Very interesting thoughts, but I don't have anything insightful to add to that.

Yeah I hope Subaru learns to do speeches without violating Regulus's rights

There's an interesting detail in the light novel that they did not include here (all of this is coming from memory of something I read years ago at this point so keep that in mind - i am pretty confident I am remembering this right tho): In the novel, someone (I think it was Anastasia) writes down notes for Subaru on a few points he should mention during his speech. Like how he killed a Sin Archbishop and other stuff that would give people confidence and hope. And they wanted him to lead with this. Of course those notes did not say "first, make them feel really bad". And then Subaru starts the speech with how weak he feels and how pathetic he is because he is so nervous he just forgets the notes he has in is hands. And at first everyone is like "Oh...shit." But then he starts to turn it around like here and everyone comes around and is really impressed ESPECIALLY cause he winged something they didn't even expect him to wing (in the novel that is). He apologizes afterwards like he does here, but he specifies why: Because he didn't even stick to the notes they made. They don't care though, since what he did was even better and more effective. I think that is an interesting detail that I wish they hadn't removed from the adaptation. Now, the rest? Amazing as always.

Peak: Zero! This is honestly one of my favorite eps of the show, and def of this season. It’s such a culmination of Subaru’s growth so far, and has so much great stuff in the extended runtime. I wanna talk about Al first. I haven’t talked about him much, but he’s one of my favorite characters in this entire story. At least top 5, maybe top 3. He’s got such an interesting perspective on things, and has clearly been through a lot. His body is covered in scars, he’s missing an arm, and in S1 Priscilla refers to his face as “ruined.” He and Subarus dynamic and interplay is so good, especially with them both being from Japan. It adds a whole layer of understanding between the two. He says a lot of interesting things this ep, referring to Emilia as the captured princess, and Subaru as the prince on a horse. He, and this season in general, pulls a lot from fairy tales, ancient stories, and ancient heroism. And how those things are played with and completely subverted. I’m super excited to talk more about this theme the season has as we get further into the season. It’s very apt of Al to talk about the weight that Subaru will be carrying if he decides to do this. It comes from a place of care, and from the way Al talks, he seems to have had a history with the Cult, and not a good one. Funny enough, you actually talked about the possible weight Subaru might carry allll the way back during the whale fight because of his “heroic delusions” as Al calls them if I’m remembering correctly. I love Garf jumping into Subarus arms. He’s such a kid. Also love Julius in this ep. And then we have Subarus speech. Honestly I think it speaks for itself. I myself got sucked in by it. It’s such and exemplar of his growth thus far, and while there’s still lots of growth and actualization for him to go through, and even more hidden depths and struggles in him that the anime hasn’t presented yet, he’s come so far from S1. This is the payoff for all the suffering, all the pain, and all the change. It’s not just him loving and caring for himself more, it’s that now, he can actually touch the hearts of others. And I love all the Emilia stuff this ep as well. Her talks with 184 range from heartbreaking to really beautiful. It’s so horrifying to imagine that Regulus has functionally cut them off from almost the entire world, destroying every trace of connection they had, even their names replaced by numbers. And as a final note, I’ll just say I love the direction of this ep. It was directed by the same episode director that did eps like From Zero, Parent and Child, and Choose Me. The music is incredible too, with his speech backed by an insert song by Emilia’s VA called “I trust you.” Followed by a episode title card, pure white, with the Newest heroes colored grayish black like Subaru, and the Ancient Heroes colored like Reinhard’s red hair, as a hero from a lineage of sword saints. Great thoughts as always, super excited for next week’s episodes!

Peak zero day!!!! This episode always gets to me, the speech is so powerful and inspiring

Peak Zero Day!! Man i love the speech Subaru gave this episode. It started with him doubting himself but it ended very nicely i think. Subaru isnt a powerful protagonist yet he is brave enough to still fight the witch cult and thats why his speech is so powerful. I do also like the convo he had with Al, and i do agree with you that sometimes hearing a different opinion on something is a good thing to make up your mind, Subaru probably wouldnt have done it, if it wasnt for Al. Great reaction and commentary, im excited to see your reactions to the next couple of episodes.

Snor

I still have some thoughts to say about Al but waiting for the right moment besides the slow pileup of things. For now good episode can't wait for the next
