Curious qn, Are you going to release the if route reaction or will it be on the next tier paywall?

Since it's very important for Beatrice character and it won't be explained in season 3 I'm putting it here : Beako cannot create mana on her own nor absorb mana from the atmosphere, on top she has terrible mana consumption. This was solved previously as she drained mana from people in the mansion and stocked lots of mana over 400 years but she emptied the tank during episode 25 of season 2. For the rules of the contract with Subaru: - Subaru cannot form contracts with other spirits. - Beako can only drain mana from Subaru. Since Subaru's gate broke in season 2, his mana generation is slow and he cannot use magic anymore. So he uses Beako as a medium and Beako ensures he does not die by overflow of mana since he has no way of expelling the accumulating mana anymore. Meaning, without that contract Subaru would have been dead anyways after season 2. This also means, if Beako and Subaru get separated for a long period of time, Subaru eventually will die because of his mana accumulation. This also explains why Beako isn't as powerful anymore as she was in S2, all her mana reserves got blasted into the rabbits and her current battery aka Subaru is not the best out there. It's annoying that they cut that part out because it gives more sense to Beatrice "clinginess/obsessiveness" since she is essentialy holding subaru's life in her hands. But like Subaru with emilia in season 1 she is making the mistake of being overly devoted to him because she is the only one who can keep him alive on a daily basis.

I actually thought something like that would be your answer which is why I brought it up. It seems like the most important(or at least one of the most important i don't really know you just parasocially) is choice. I've generally thought that as well until more recently. Haven't really figured it out yet but I think it's more like choice free from coercion or manipulation which is probably impossible. Like insuring kids from up, a little direct outside influence a possible, or no substances. But it could also be something like not having a lack or the wrong information. And with ai we are about to enter a world where it is going to be even more impossible to determine the truth. I forgot where I was going with this. Rem is best girl.

Garfiel and Mimi are both 15 by the way. Garfiel looks older than he is and tries to act it, but is very emotionally immature. Mimi looks younger than she is and acts it because she knows levity helps but is actually very emotionally mature. The idea of the visual difference I'd meant to give a tiger and cat dynamic

Nathan Jarrett

Just a heads up because it kinda fits the topic. Once you've watched season 3 episode 5, be sure to also watch the break time short of that episode. They reveal something pretty important there that should've been revealed all the way back in season 1.

NATSUKI SUBARU THE LITTLE GIRL USER!

Just thought I would mention cuz this is never brought up in the show, but Regular Corneas (lol) is stated in the novels to have an aura about him that makes him seem so plain and boring that you couldn't spot him in a crowd even if you knew him really well. This isn't really ever shown well in the show besides Emilia just completely forgetting who he is, because she DOES have her trial memories still, and the character designer read what the authors description of him was and decided to completely drip him out lol. But yeah, Emilia basically just can't recall at all who he was because of how plain he is. Maybe she could have if it was like a day after the trial, but it has been like a year, and he was really only in the trial for a bit before he got vanished by Pandora

Thank you as always. What I can contribute: the non-subtitled song that Liliana started to sing was about the Sword Demon (= Wilhelm) taking out the White Whale. It didn't get into anything specific. It was just setting the scene and starting talking about how the flower fields were there when it went into the background and Wilhelm got the courage to start to talk to Reinhard.

Ryan

Its also very coincidental that the Witch of Envy went on her rampage approximately 400 years before the main story's events.

Daniel Kurtz

There's a better time to mention it later even after this season it's still just a theory of mine (haven't read any of the light novels to know if it has any weight). But I'll be sure to mention it later and the evidence ive seen (circumstantial or not lol).

PKKite

Yeah seems WAY too specific to be an accident. Curious who you're thinking about haha

Always happy to talk about Echidna 😂 It's tricky because we don't always know we have a choice. When people don't know they have a choice and aren't aware of the danger they're easy to manipulate. But that is actually one of the reasons why I think it's important to make the distinction that there always is a choice and to be reluctant to chalk things up to someone else's mind control. There is a line between someone else's influence and one's choice, and I think it's important to draw that line as generously as possible to oneself. Echidna is way too flippant about the results of her words and actions. She seems callous towards Beatrice and to Subaru in the what if path. But I think simultaneously both Beatrice and Subaru make their own choices. As for the love yourself theme, I think the greed path was the antithesis for a different reason. Subaru, by allying with Echidna, essentially gives up on himself and his conscience. What's interesting is that I think the disaster starts the moment he agrees, not in the following 100 trillion deaths. Because he chose (Echidna did give him the choice) to agree to do something he felt terrible about because he couldn't face doing it the way he felt was right.

Alex G

just a clarification for you the spirits in re zero dont have romantic urges. they seek familial connections, for example puck thinking of Emilia as his daughter and the same with Beatrice thinking of subaru as if he's her parent. so the subaru Beatrice thing isn't a ship or anything romantic. Hopefully that makes there interactions less wierd for you😂

Tyre Willis

Yeah i fully agree with you, and i do see why Subaru would be mad at his inability to hold his anger as there was the scene earlier when they were talking about Gluttony and he started becoming angry and defensive when he wasn't told about it, despite it being unnecessary. Not saying he doesnt have that to work on but i also do appreciate him standing up for his friends which i dont hold that against him as irl you know uve got a good friend when they stand up for you like that.

Snor

Agreed. I think you’re gonna really appreciate Garfiels journey throughout this season and the series as a whole. We’ve got conflict and guilt over the killing of another person, doubts about his own strength, and the seeming reappearance of a mother he’d accepted as dead. Things are gonna be rough for my boy.

Vali Sippola

Good point about the outbursts. I think they covered the various dimensions of Subaru and Julius' respective positions really nicely in their discussion. Subaru's radar for wrongdoing and his ability to speak up about it are admirable and worth praise from Julius. Where I think I goes wrong and what I'm guessing are Subaru's reasons for being so self critical is where he gets so emotional he can't exercise self control. I think in many cases that is the big distinction. There are times for righteous, well directed anger but it's important to have the final say in when and how that is. Julius maybe being guilty of the other side (or maybe same side with a different emotion) where he can exercise the restraint to consider the broader situation, but perhaps is trapped by those concerns.

Alex G

Great, thank you for that I will watch them for next week 😄 About Garf-Elsa, I'm so glad to see it revisited because it's been weighing on me too. I think I mentioned a few times how conflicted I felt about it because it's Garf's big moment and yet... So it was a huge relief to see

Alex G

I've been hearing some buzz about it here and there! It sounds like something I would love

Alex G

So this episode has a part that kind of gets downplayed but I think Subaru is 100% right about otherworld visitors somehow being sent here. Too much lines up culturally for not another japanese man coming here 400 years ago and was able to use what he knew to run a company while importing his cultural knowhow to this region. And I have a theory that Subaru isnt the only otherworlder currently living in this time either. There is a character weve met in season 1 that has always felt off vs how pretty much every character has acted in the show imo. Not counting actual crazy characters like the Bishops. Once we get further in this season Ill reveal more about my hunch but ever since season 1 ive had thoughts.

PKKite

As for when to watch those specific breaktimes, I’d say def watch at least those two (5&6) as soon as possible. They add a lot of context to an existing character that’ll probably give more to discuss in upcoming episodes.

Vali Sippola

So something about Echidna i was thinking about. It seemed to me that the author believes in free will. Echidna seems to know most material things and a lot of the knowledge she is so greedy for is what choices people will make. So for your benefit i would say she doesn't manipulate people, but with Beatrice being so childlike and literally calling her mother I would say it is definitely manipulation asking her to wait for that special person. So I'm not sure how much she manipulates and how much she wants to know people's "free" choices. Also her path is pretty much the antithesis of one of the themes of the show which is to love yourself. In which he dies so many times he no longer has any real care for himself at all anymore.

Great reaction and commentary so glad we are on season 3 im excited to let you know that season 4 has already been announced!! Its common for us to wait 4 years for a new rezero season but you're lucky you started watching at the perfect time because we might only need to wait 1 year for season 4 xD There are some things i wanna say like with Subarus outburst at Heinkel and Priscilla, while i do agree that you should hold your anger i would also argue that at some point how much are you meant to take before speaking out? While Subaru should prob keep his mouth shut in most scenarios i do really appreciate his passion for doing what he thinks is right afterall he is standing up for his friends who are being treated bad and despite his anger there is something i appreciate so deeply about that. I really like your take on "What if Puck was a little boy holding Emilia" because there are other anime where i use that logic alot (most of the time in reverse tho) because sometimes talking to people who use the double standard alot gets tough xD Also i wanna mention that Lilianna (The Songstres) was actually introduced in a side story in between arc 2 and arc 3 so for the LN readers her introduction wasnt new. Great reaction and commentary, i am very excited for your reactions on ep 2 and 3 next week as those eps are good.

Let’s goooo! Season 3 just wrapped today, with S4 announced, so perfect timing. I love this intro to the season, lulls you in, then hits you hard. I love the new status quo, a year has passed (some of the stuff that happened in that year is covered in this seasons breaktimes, as well as side stories in the novels) we’ve got father-daughter Subaru/Beatrice, internal affairs Otto, a more confident and outgoing Emilia, and Garf settling in to the group more solidly. Love the way Priestella is portrayed, lots of cool lore and stuff to be revealed, and we also get a mention of Hoshin and his probable origin from Japan. He’s actually been mentioned by Garf in S2. Liliana is such a fun character, getting a proper bard in a fantasy setting is a must imo. And Subaru, this is the problem with having a little girl as your contracted spirit and the person you use to fight in your place, you just get terrible nicknames. What a disaster. He’s gotta clean up his image. I’d like to think Otto has been trying to do damage control behind the scenes lmao. Regulus appearing is such a shock, I love the direction of the scene, Subaru thinking he’s just some random creep, not knowing what kind of monster is right in front of him. And there is an answer as to why Emilia can’t seem to remember him, but that’ll come later. I love having the whole Royal candidate cast back. It’d be too much to go over all the stuff we get on them in a comment, but I especially love the stuff we get with Reinhard, Wilhelm, and now Heinkel. The Astrea family drama is one of my fav parts of this entire story, so getting it introduced in the anime is great. Plus that moonlit convo between Subaru and Wilhelm is just great. The Garfiel stuff with Elsa is rlly rlly good. It makes sense, a 15 year old boy who kills someone for the first time (in this timeline). And in the fight, he doesn’t win on merely his own strength. Plus add on to the fact that she was flirting with him the whole time, professed her love, and then died gruesomely, I can see why this would be pretty traumatizing. It’s also worth noting that Garfiel does say he’ll let her go during the fight, so mercy for her wasn’t off the table in his mind. I absolutely love the Julius/Subaru convo. They’re such different people on the surface, and while Subaru has kept his grudge, whenever they speak, they end up getting to some really thought provoking and intimate places, despite Subaru claiming otherwise lmao. The dynamic between them is one of my favs in the series, and this scene is a real signifier of the start to that. And finally, Sirius Romanee-Conti. Same last name as Petelgeuse I might add. I won’t say much, but I love her. I’m sure she’d appreciate that. I loved her in the novel, and I think her VA and the animators brought her to life wonderfully. Great thoughts as always, and I’m super excited for this season! (Just a final note, they actually re-added some pretty major cut content from S1 in the breaktimes of this season. It chronologically takes place during this episode, but in terms of the breaktimes it’s breaktimes 5&6)

Vali Sippola

Amazing timing, especially since Season 3 just finished airing its last episode today! Thx for the reactions! This is a little off topic, but have you perhaps heard anything about an anime this season called "Orb: On the Movements of the Earth" that also just recently finished airing? It's a 25 episode show that completely adapted its source material, and the best way I can describe it is if Vinland Saga Season 2 was its own show and put into a single season. The story follows a group of scholars who, in the 15th century, stumble upon the heliocentric theory at a time when the Roman Catholic Church has lost sight of its pursuit of "Truth." It covers the journey of these "heretics" as they resist persecution and challenge the prevailing "common sense" to pass on their inspiration and uncover real truth—ultimately striving to "move the world." It's a really thought provoking story with A TON of philosophy and themes about universal truths and humanity's struggle to find purpose under the heavens. ReZero is like my favorite story alongside AOT and I would still consider "Orb" to be my anime of the year for 2024 and probably for the remainder of 2025 as well. If you like Vinland S2, I would say this anime is a must watch. Another super neat part is that the show reveals its caliber within the first 3 episodes. 3 eps in and you'll know whether this show is for you, and what to expect for the rest of it! Thanks for the upload again, and if no one else has recommended "Orb" so far -- then I'll gladly be the first one!

Hailan

Can't wait for this!

Of course this releases while I'm drowning in assignments, I'll try and find some time tonight 😭
