This is one of my favorite Re:Zero episodes. There's just so much good stuff in it. There's Emilia's 3rd Trial and all the mystery of what it might mean or indicate. There's Garf vs Elsa, which as you mentioned, is some of the best action in the show thus far. And I also love how they interact with each other. And then we have Ram's confession (which is much harsher than Rem's) and their showdown with Roswaal. Any of those 3 things would be a highlight reel moment for the show, and here is this episode, with 3 of them all together. 30 minutes of peak imo. One thing I do want to mention, is the dust explosion stuff that Subaru tried in at the start. That's a real thing. Wikipedia has a great article on it, but the short of it is that burning occurs on the surface, and as you take the same mass of object, and break it into smaller and smaller pieces, the surface area increases (while the mass stays the same). And so eventually, normally inflammable things, become flammable, because the conditions are just that good for burning. Now, for one thing, it's a good thing Subaru didn't succeed, because if it had, then he would have gotten blown up as well. But also, what Subaru did, would basically never trigger a dust explosion. You need the dust to be finely dispersed in the air, so that it can chain burn effectively. Dust explosions often happen after dust naturally builds up for months or years. Throwing dust into the air won't cut it. It would be too clumped.

With each reaction I'm starting to see more and more of what Mr.Goodwins type of woman looks like. Great reaction and looking forward to more Goodwin Greatness! (seeing as I have more time now!)

Emman Reed

Perfect timing for this

Three random, disconnected comments: - The "Glass Coffin" is actually its own separate story by the Brothers Grimm, but it was very influential in the development of later adaptations of Snow White. :) - As for the voices being distinguishable, that's a very interesting theory that "anime voice" women are less distinct than anime men. I honestly think that's something maybe a grad student could or should look into, haha! Personally, I hadn't noticed, but I'm relying on other cues, I think. Priscilla, for example, is the only one who refers to herself as "warawa" (basically, very old royalty's first-person pronoun), so all of them have their own distinct grammar and vocabulary, apart from their voices. In that sense, it might be easier to distinguish if you commit to watching without subtitles the whole way. :) - It's always interesting to imagine where the conversations about things like a genetic component to intelligence came up in real life. Like, clearly this is not something out-of-the-blue. There's context to that conversation that we don't have, and it's entertaining to imagine what (or where?) that would be.

Garf and Elsa were really grinding on each other during that fight-like wild animals.

Not entirely unknown she does think "who is this person? Wait I guess its echidna since its her grave after all. Anyways I'm gonna just break this fancy looking magic seal thingy" Echidna maybe possibly smiling after the act since butterflies have a meaning after all

Kenta Nanaya

Oh right right... Wait... So she just smashes an unknown person's glass coffin? You won't be needing this! 👊

Alex G

While people can remember the trials, echidna erases your memory of her when out of the trials or her windows xp mindscape. That is of course you somehow make a deal like subaru did to remember her afterwards

Kenta Nanaya

Peak zero day!!!

No problem!

Vali Sippola

Yeah but... *Covers ears*

Thank you so much for that transcript with names. It was so hard for me to tell who was speaking

Alex G

Looking forward to it :)

Yes, Sadly, Echidna died....... about 400 years ago.... That was her *tomb*

Let’s goooo! This is one of my favorite episodes of the entire show. It’s so packed. This is also an amazing episode for you to post today given the episode of S3 that just came out today. I love your theory on why Echidna hates Emilia. While there may be “plot reasons” I’m also of the opinion that the reason may be more closely related to the heart and echidnas desires for herself rather than some grand plan. I love, love, love the scene between Minerva and Emilia. A popular theory, and one that I absolutely believe, is that Minerva is her actual mother. The Garf VS Elsa fight is absolutely my fav fight at this point in the show. Close between Julius and Betelgeuses battle at the end of S1 tho. The way it’s portrayed is very brutal, but there’s also an intimacy to it, especially when they’re biting each other’s necks, it’s very intentional. Also I think this is just a great send-off to Elsa. She’s got a lot of hidden depths, and if you want more of that, a few of the S2 Breaktime shorts actually focus on conversations Elsa and Meili have with each other that didn’t make it into the main show. They’re really fantastic. I also would’ve tried to save Elsa ngl. And we have Ram’s confession. I absolutely love this whole sequence, set to an insert song sung by Ram’s VA called “What you don’t know.” You pretty much hit the nail on the head when it comes to Rams feelings, Roswaals rejection of it, and the interplay between both of them. It’s super nuanced, and a lot of people and reactors tend to be quick to label Ram’s love of Roswaal as completely unhealthy, and while there’s certainly a degree of that (she’s definitely got an acquired taste in men) I don’t think that’s all there is to it. Feelings change, and there’s a lot more nuance to these things than people give credit for. And finally, the third trial. It’s very cryptic, but I thought I’d label each of the lines to the different characters who say them based on the voice actors. “You're a hero. A hero is all you can be.” - Subaru “I..” - Reinhard “ ...you cannot even wield the sword without it, thief?!” - Wilhelm “Subaru, I know you and Emilia-neesama are both tired. I'm sorry. And yet I ended up just weighing you down further...” - Petra “My precious granddaughter has grown into such a fine young lady, no?” - Old Man Rom “I'm sorry. I'm sorry I couldn't kill you.” - Aldebaran “If that's the case, I should've just been wrapped up in that cave left for dead!” - Otto “Under no circumstances shall I be killed by something as nonsensical as a curse!” - Crusch “There, you see? I win again.” - Priscilla “To think someone I wanted to kill so badly turned out to be a kind person. What a nightmare.” - Ram “If I bend my knee, and lose my sword, what is left for me?” - Julius “What's so hard about sayin' "I don't want to be alone?" - Anastasia “I'm gonna kill you just like I promised, Natsuki Subaru!” - Garfiel “I made the realization that I have not walked alone all this time, that is all.” - Roswaal “I suppose we must shed every last drop of blood in our bodies to atone.” - Frederica “You can just stand there running in place! Magic, dragons, whatever stands in my way, I'll destroy it!” - Felt “Why won't the soul take hold?!” - Felix Great thoughts as always, super, super excited for the next one!

Peak Zero Day!! Great reaction, im also excited for ep 24 as its one of my favorites. (Also slight spoiler about Minerva the witch of wrath below) Its not confirmed yet at least not in the anime so far but theres alot of evidence to support that Minerva (the witch of wrath) is Emilia's real mom. Since she is a half elf we know her father is an elf because fortuna is one so the mom has to be human which is where Minerva comes in. Them also sharing this moment in this episode also hints at it.

sorry for the third long comment but it's awesome you react to the big garfiel fight today since the new rezero season 3 episode was also the new big garfiel showdown fight, and HOLY ****! I don't want to dog season 2 too hard but it's very evident that the studio splitting in half and being hit with covid all during production really showed during a lot of parts in the season. they still did fantastic with the resources they had, but they 100% were rushing to keep up with their ambition and deadlines. season 3 however doesn't even seem like the same anime! todays fight had a 1 minute sequence from an extremely famous animator who's had some incredible cuts on huge one piece episodes and even some of the best parts of JJK's shibuya incident arc. I'm just astounded. I can't wait for you to see the massive upgrade in animation

The thing with the whole Minerva died 400 years before could easily be explained by some timey wimy bullshit or even some kind of secret Minerva had. While currently it doesn't line up it could easily be handwaved away from the author. Also time bull/alt realities does line up with other theories.

PKKite

"that just freed echidna from her death curse" OHHHHH BOYYYYYYYYYYY........................

a lot of people speculate that emilias mother is actually Minerva. It makes a lot of sense in the context of the scene and we do know her mother is human, and allegedly is dubbed as a witch from others like echidna. the only hole in this theory is the fact that Minerva and the other witches died 400 years ago. you would think this means she cant possibly be emilias mom, but then you also remember that she knew emilias mom personally (according to her at least)???? the author loves setting up so many conflicting narratives, and I love trying to figure out what is actually true or a misdirection. Another plot point I'm pretty confident is a misdirection is the rezero world being "canonically flat". there's just too much that doesn't add up, like stars and a moon existing, Tappei being a huge nerd about astrology and space, and also the common belief that satella consumed half of the world during her rampage 400 years ago, and yet the world seems to be fine... My theory is that the world of rezero is actually a floating island above the "real world", and the world way below is monumentally massive. a similar twist is thinking about the ending of HxH and the dark continent.
