i do think emilia's present trial revolves around potential warm moments such as the one depicted in the show. only because she accepted her past, it doesn't immediately mean she accepts how she will miss out on her living with geuse and mother fortuna. her trial is about confronting that very fact i think. it is quite a harsh reality to be brought upon and even having to accept it for how it really is now.

The Emilia jumping off the cliff and seeing her own reflection for the first time in the water was significant — because it was her FIRST TIME! The anime didn’t make it very clear but definitely hinted at it, the author explicitly wrote in the novels that Emilia has never dared to look in a mirror for her whole life ever since she woke up from the crystal. It’s entirely because of the prejudice that surrounded her, that she herself became scared of seeing her own reflection — and the face of the “Witch of Envy” that everyone accuses her of having. That’s why, even in her alternate present — she noticed that the mirror inside her room remains completely blank. Her trial of present largely had to do with combatting her own guilt and lack of self worth and making up her mind to take that first step forward, towards the outside world — even if it means leaving this pleasant dream behind. So, in the climax of it all, Emilia does her own leap of faith that parallels Subaru’s, in a quite literal fashion. This leads her to see her own reflection on the water’s surface (title drop) for the first time, in which she makes a little joke, lamenting how she resembled Mother Fortuna less than she had thought (she would never be able to look in a mirror and check before, even if she hadn’t lost her memories) — which obviously makes sense as Fortuna is biologically only her aunt, and not her real mother by blood. I do want to stress the “Happiness” in the “Happiness reflected on the water’s surface” title card of the episode. Emilia actively averts her reflection precisely because it has turned into something that causes her pain. The last time she’s seen her own self was when she was a mere child, and when she could actually be proud of her physical features that somewhat resembled her foster mother. But because of the societal abuse that she suffered ever since waking up from the ice, and the fact that she doesn’t remember Fortuna up till now — her appearance is something that’ll take something like a Subaru to appreciate. But for her to accept her appearance here in the second trial, and to even be as comfortable enough as to crack a joke at it — this reflects even beyond just her acceptance of her own physical appearance, but also her state of making peace with her past and how she made up her mind to work towards a better future of her own. This isn’t just Emilia reflected on the water’s surface, it’s “Happiness” — because she’s finally able to look forward to tomorrow with a smile, which is kind of a call back to when Subaru first helped Rem realize that, no? There’s something really nice and profound in the impact Subaru had on both of them, and that really makes this one of my favorite title cards. Actually, the author also said it’s one of his favorites, even across the whole series!! The author also made a comment urging the viewers to forget the one scene in the 2nd ending of Season 1, “Stay Alive”, in which it showcases Emilia waking up and brushing her teeth — while looking at her own reflection in the mirror. The author stresses that the visuals were for the ending song purposes only, and definitely NOT canon!! Just a funny little detail that also adds so much more to the 2nd trial for Emilia, which was emotionally and thematically stacked already :D

I definitely think there's something to that. It's hard to say because it could just be for a yet unknown plot reason. But just imagining why someone like Echidna WOULD dislike someone like Emilia, that makes sense

Alex G

I am also curiousof Echidna's dislike of Emilia. This is all theory since I'm watching along side you. I think maybe it's because Emilia is able to feel so much gratitude for things. So much so it sometimes hurts her that she doesn't deserve it. But that's something Echidna can't, because she will always focus on the next thing she wants. Like a locus trying to find the next bit of knowledge to consume. Subaru was soo tempting because seeing endless possibilities was a feast. But for Emilia she so greatful for things and the next goal doesn't get in the way of her enjoyment.

Yes it is indeed. And now its caught ur interest i assume xD I do like that they made it cuz the Rezero anime actually cuts alot of the story from the light novel. Obviously to save time but alot of people dont like that so the chibi break time shorts is a good way to add some important lore from the series. I would also recommend you check it out.

Snor

It is. Basically how it functions is like this. S1 has 11 Breaktime episodes that correlate with the first 11 episodes of the show. S2 has 25 Breaktime episodes that each correlate with their respective S2 episodes. The Echidna one is Breaktime Ep 17.

Vali Sippola

I heard about something where Echidna is stuck in branches during the trial. Is that a break time short?

Alex G

Nice. Excited to hear your theories.

(Putting this in a separate comment since it doesn’t pertain to any particular episode) I saw you mentioning maybe watching supplemental content in the comments of the last ep.If you were to do any, reaction or not, I would personally recommend watching the Re: Zero Breaktime Shorts. They were released alongside S1, 2, and now 3, and are canon. They’re animated in a cute little chibi artstyle and are about 2-3 minutes each. They were basically small parts of the novel that didn’t make the cut for the actual season, and range from cool slice of life and world-building to actually really important and vital character stuff. S1 of the Breaktime series is on crunchyroll, but S2 of Breaktime is not due to Crunchyroll kinda just sucking when it comes to licensing for this show, whether it be not having the OG version of S1 or Breaktime S2 and 3. Luckily, both S1&2 are on a supercut I found on the internet archive, so even if you wanted to check it out on your own time, it’s absolutely worth it.

Vali Sippola

Yeah I don't know what she was thinking there haha. Maybe something about his resilience is my best guess

Alex G

Peak zero day yet again!! Bro that reaction you gave when Emilia said that Garfiel never once said a word of complaint had me dying bro xD lmao I went to the dub to see if it was changed to mean something different but no it was exactly the same. The only defense i have for Emilia here is that she didnt see the worst of Garfiel but thats all i got xD Great reaction, i am very excited to see your reaction for episode 24 as its one of my favorite episodes in the series.

Snor

When editing this episode one of the potential reasons someone like Echidna would hate someone like Emilia hit me like a ton of quain stones. It will almost certainly come up in the next video lol

Alex G

Peak zero day!!! Emilia was best girl all along, i suppose.

Let’s gooo! I love this episode. It’s super rewarding. The stuff at the mansion is great, mostly setup for the battles and conflicts that are gonna occur. Also yes, Otto does not fit under the category of man or woman. He exists beyond social convention. Plus we get more Elsa greatness, which is always nice. Echidna was right a few episodes ago, it seems as if the trials no longer prove a significant hurdle for Emilia. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to learn. I love how throughout the unthinkable present, Emilia is almost a merging of her present and child self. Almost a vision of getting to grow up in the following years she never had with Geuse and Fortuna. Her clothing, and the VA herself makes her voice higher pitched until she starts talking to Echidna, where she transitions back to her current cadence. The scene where she jumps off the cliff is a favorite of mine, mirroring the framing of Subarus jump all the way back in S1, and a display of her resolve, truly looking at herself. Echidna saying that she hates her is super interesting to me. There’s a lot of theories on what this could mean. I don’t wanna say too much as there is new info in the future of the story, but it’s a scene I keep coming back to, and I think is vital, even if we don’t know why yet. Great thoughts as usual, sooo excited for next week. Some real greatness.

Vali Sippola

Yeah, Emilia crushed that 2nd Trial. Though, Echidna previously flat-out said that after conquering the first trial, the next 2 wouldn't pose much of a problem for her. (Though she sounded kinda bitter about it, like she does)
