It's where Helly had to keep reciting the same thing over and over again. But you're right, we haven't seen Mark in it.

We haven't seen Mark in the breakroom, have we? It cuts away every time he's about to enter it

My partner is like that as well, and I definitely have done it before too., aha I think with life being different than it is now, allowing for more time and creative expression, those things would likely get done more so, especially if art or concrete work was as commended as it used to be. However, if that were the case, the amount of people producing art would be a lot more than there used to be as well I'd think (due to technology), which would influence things - for good or bad, though, I don't know, haha.

Yeah I just spaced out on that one. In that category of enthusiasm not being the same thing as usefulness, I experience this a lot (and see it in a family member from which I think I inherited in one way or another) where I cycle through major exciting plans I have, doing maybe 1% of them. Then later friends will ask me, "how's X going," and I'll think, oh yeah, I did say I was doing that. But that was two weeks ago!

I may have misunderstood what you meant when you said "damn, will will ever see it?" after Mark went into the break room, but we've seen what happens in the break room before. Also I really like what you said about the self-help stuff and how there are the good feelings that can come with that (more to it than that, of course) but how it comes down to actually implementing it, putting it into action. I think therapy applies to that and a lot of people luckily do do the work - those who are invested - when in therapy to some degree, but there are definitely those who go through what you were talking about.

just keep watching the show, you'll know why she came back

Obviously I’m bringing up something people could consider dumb because you can think of β€œduh” stuff like this for most problems in most shows, but man I feel like Helly could do a lot more to get herself out of this situation. Last episode when mark was sitting down with her saying they got rid of most of the dangerous items, I could see metal forks in the background. Why not grab one of those and thrust it into your leg before going down the elevator, why the hell would outie Helly come back to work after that, and did I miss something because why did she come back anyway? Was she not conscious when she came down the elevator literally mid hanging?

I feel like people who are deeply into philosophy, especially academic philosophy can fall prey to this very easily. The scope can easily become too focused on what’s right or wrong with absurdism vs nihilism instead of appreciating whatever bits allow a person to assign more agency and meaning to their lives.

all great answers. honestly for me it would be avatar: the last airbender. you show that shit to any version of me it changes his life

Oh! Random example I read a copy of a relationship self-help book written by 90's sitcom star Paul Reiser. I thought I had relationships all figured out πŸ˜‚ I think I was 11 or 12. It also had that feeling of me finding a secret tome that I wasn't supposed to be reading

Alex G

Actually better answer is probably just movies like the original Star Wars trilogy lol

Alex G

I have a few real life examples that come to mind. My mom was reading Martin Seligman so I picked up her copy of What You Can Change and What You Can't (that's where I was first introduced to learned helplessness) and I think that was a pivotal point, not just for the content itself but also the power of non-fiction. But that I think has probably held up decently well over time... I know there were dozens of books that left me feeling great and thinking all my problems were then solved, only for that to fizzle out rapidly, but no specific titles are coming to mind πŸ˜‚

Alex G

to this day he's one of the best artists i know but yeah 6th grade Hebrew class was weird like that

Jacob Cannon

The irony of that story is it's possible they were committing the same mistake they were punishing your friend for. That sounds like a fixation on the rule instead of the message, not unlike the mistake of trying to capture a whole idea in a word or picture.

Alex G

if you were Severed what's a piece of media that you think might get through to you the way Ricken's book does for Mark?

Jacob Cannon

damn that stuff about god was really interesting man. I went to a religious school growing up and we weren't allowed to say or write the "true name of God" one time a friend of mine got in trouble for drawing his depiction of god lol it wasn't anything inappropriate it was just the fact that he was trying to draw God. i mean i still think it's stupid but i like your perspective a lot. yes I also think you nailed it at the end with the most compelling part of this story being the themes and ideas explored like we want to know what's going on and how it connects to the characters and ideas we get attached to. It's why I think it worries me less in terms of the whole mystery box aspect, because I don't think the creators have lost sight of that

Jacob Cannon

Oh I totally missed the joke lmao
