One interesting thing about the whole "Who is Rem" stuff, is that you could already see its effects in Season 1, you (generally, not you specifically) just didn't know it then. Remember the blank letter? Something that was cut from the anime, was that Rem actually physically penned the letter (recall that Subaru learned how to read and write about a month ago, not exactly someone you want penning a formal document). It's also interesting that both times that Subaru visits the village when they're all still alive, Rem is erased for both. That's why Ram never inquired about Rem's status when Subaru returned without her. A question she would undoubtedly ask if she could remember she had a twin sister. I should also mention that there is a companion chibi short series called Break Time that airs with Re:Zero. I bring it up now, because they are canon and the Season 2 ones actually have some quite pertinent information in them (personally I view them as more important than Memory Snow) and there are 2 that are vitally important in Season 3. They're only 3 minutes long and they used to be on Crunchyroll, but I think they're no longer there anymore. Anyways I thought I'd let you know as you seem to be enjoying the show quite a bit and might find the extra 3 minutes a welcome addition (note you'd watch the corresponding Break Time episode after the main episode if you wanted to watch them).

There is a short story by Haruki Murakami about a talking monkey who works in a hot springs hotel and steals the names of women whom he likes and they forget their own names.

Let's gooo, double uploads for season 2. This episode was pretty much perfect as an adaptation, so I don't have much to say other than that it is very good. In the novels it's clearly stated that Subaru killed himself several times to try and go beyond the checkpoint, but it never worked. Hence why he is looking at the fruit knife in Rem's room (the novels are pretty brutal with this suicide, slitting your own throat with a fruit carving knife ain't exactly easy). I love Subaru's demeanour throughout this episode, compared to his early season 1 self you can feel how much more grounded and mature he is (even if at heart he's still just a teenager). Onto the next reaction

That's tragic

Go frame-by-frame at 10:41. Gluttony eats people's everything, including possible futures and parallel timelines.

I tried watching this show once, couldn't for personal reasons. But this time is a hell of a lot more enjoyable with the commentary and "companionship" of Mr.Goodwin along side it. Hoping you all have great christmas and winter break!:))

For sure. I’ve been reading the novels for years so I’m pretty familiar with them. It’s one of the longest fantasy series of all time, and they definitely end up cutting a lot of stuff despite extended episodes to remedy that as much as they can. It reminds me of the A Song of Ice and Fire adaptation quite a bit actually. Not the later seasons of course, but the first 4 seasons of Game of Thrones ended up cutting down tons of world-building and dialogue from the books, but still manage to faithfully adapt it, while also taking advantage of the new medium. The Re: Zero adaptation reminds me a lot of that. Has its upsides and downsides, but the passion from the directors, animators, and voice actors is undeniable.

Peak zero day!!!!!

The knife glances are kinda cut content nod, he sorta mentions no matter how many times he tried he couldn't save Rem, but he did try a lot more times than just the once.

It's very clear that this is a work of passion, definitely, and also I think the fact that it's adapting a light novel rather than a manga makes it where the creators are particularly pressed for time and space. I haven't read the novels, but I think it's still clear as a viewer how each major conversation is a condensed, cliff notes version of the absolute essentials of what was originally there.

Ryan

That's wild that they actually bought ad time.

Let’s go! Loved your thoughts as usual, especially on our two new antagonists and how Subarus growth is positive, but will come with new challenges and responsibilities. This episode is such a perfect start to S2. Has all the hallmarks of Re: Zero while also growing in new directions. Regulus and Lye, just like Petelgeuse before them, are super interesting, and you already started scratching the surface of what they’re about, with Regulus being a particular favorite of mine, but all I’ll say for now is that I love Gluttony’s design. For a character archetype that’s usually portrayed as large and usually somewhat mindless, I love how Lye is small and lanky, and talks so much. There was a 4 year gap between seasons 1 and 2, and it was amazing to get right back into the world. The character interactions, the direction, the music, the VA work, all fantastic. Every season of Re: Zero is a passion project by the studio, but Season 2 was particularly special. It came out during the height of the Covid pandemic, and so obviously the production was difficult. Despite that though, they did something practically unheard of for TV anime. The opening and endings play a shockingly few amount of times, and the studio straight up bought out ad space so ads wouldn’t play and to give the episodes runtimes of up to 30 minutes long. These long eps happened a little in S1, and continues in S3, but this is and was pretty unprecedented. So I just always appreciate the work that every staff member puts into adapting this story. They’re fans just as much as the audience is. Super excited for the next eps!

im really glad u loved how this show progressed so far, but I'm really confident that season 2 is gonna cement your love for this show tenfold. Most people have arc 4 as their favorite for a reason (usually only contested with arc 6 which airs sometime next year im so hyped). This season has just so many fantastic moments and incredible writing pretty much every episode once arc 4 starts (arc 4 hasn't actually started yet and actually begins after episode 2). so much buildup from season 1 that was left unresolved comes back into play here and hits so hard. I cannot wait for the reactions.

Starky

Yaay I am looking forward to two Re:Zero eps per week!

Plasma Lemon

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that now that we're back to normal episodes I'll be posting 2 Re: Zero videos per week, next one tomorrow

Alex G

Feels weird, just the way it worked out it was very long episodes for a lot of the schedule

Alex G
