One of my favorite lesser parts of this OVA are the magic stones that Emilia finds in the forest. At first glance they're just pretty stones, but they're actually the magic stones that Subaru traded the mining rights to for Crusch's alliance. Magic stones that haven't been exploited thus far, because the big scary Frozen Witch lived there. It's one of the things I love about Re:Zero, the smallest of details tend to be interconnected in unexpected ways.

And while there’s tons of lore implications, subtle foreshadowing, and plenty of other cool stuff, the highlight is definitely Emilia. She’s in my top 3 characters for this show, and this OVA and S2 really cement that. Re: Zero is a show that MASSIVELY benefits from rewatches, and this OVA is a perfect example of that. It colors Subarus interactions with Emilia in a completely different light. From her perspective, she’s met a guy who harbors none of the fear or prejudice that others show her based on her appearance, and even says he loves it about her. Of course, he doesn’t understand the full implications of his actions whatsoever, he understands a little, but not a lot. Also love Puck in this. There’s tons of stuff to get into surrounding his oath and what that could mean. I also really like that while Puck and Emilia have a super wholesome and precious relationship, like with every other dynamic and relationship in this show, there is still unhealthy behaviors. There’s lots to say on how much he shelters her, and lots of other stuff, but I’ll save that for later. I love the idea of being “born to be happy” it rings so true for me, and I love how it’s tied in to Emilia being able to stand up to the physical manifestation of all the hatred and prejudice thrown her way throughout her life. An unfeeling judge who tries to kill her based on something she “might” do. Super excited for S2!
