Re: Zero 1x13 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Re: Zero 1x13, The Self-Proclaimed Knight and the Greatest Knight & That's All This Story Is About, history decides who is truly slothful and who is truly heroic (it's Pastrache).

Hu, guess you really never cease to learn stuff about this series. That makes totally sense, ofc Otto would hear the Whale too, but I never realized that until now. — Thanks!

Baddy

That wasn't Otto's fault. We know the whale's voice makes people go insane, and Otto's divine protection, which he mentions in this episode, meant that he could understand what the whale was saying, which meant it affected him more. He would not have pushed him otherwise. He's canonically too nice to do that.

Subaru has heroic instincts. Meddling in things that don't concern you, like a royal selection, is apparently the essence of being a hero, if I remember All Might's dialogue correctly. The key is to meddle in a way that is useful to those you want to "help" (save), which may take some trial and error, with some foot licking along the way. I think love is something that requires no justification, its an almost visceral feeling that reasoning doesn't really play a part in, and can be born from things as superficial as liking someone's face (when they sleep) or their soft dainty hands. Whether a relationship can be considered healthy or is stable enough to survive the hardships it will inevitably face is the real question. For now Subaru seems to be focused on expressing his feelings earnestly, which is a good place to start. Though it feels a bit dirty to see Subaru use almost the same line that Rem used with him.

Tristan

Okay? And? You're still assuming that whatever it is will be bad based off of nothing but hearsay. Do you really not see the issue with that?

Gus N

The rumour has nothing to do with deconstruction of tropes.

Arakis

On a more serious note, why dismiss it based off of a rumor? This IS a deconstruction of isekai. It's been subverting all of the isekai tropes by actually writing them well, why do you assume that whatever you're taking issue with will be any different? Has the writing so far not earned enough faith in the author that you would believe some rumor instead and just assume it will be bad?

Gus N

Just FYI: OVA 2 (The Frozen Bond) should be watched before season 2, I believe it's on crunchyroll but I'm not sure.

Gus N

Who?

Gus N

The Jorbs are so handy. Subaru should learn how to use them

Qingque

Cheers. Enjoy the rest of the show. Some rumours that I heard about the author and how he writes the story with regards to Emilia and Rem really made me lose interest.

Arakis

Putting it that way, that might be the way I can relate to Subaru the best, having had exactly that situation happen post covid. I had my own Emilia, and there were other reasons of course, but with the benefit of hindsight I attribute a lot of my obsession to 1.5 years of relative isolation. I wonder why that didn't occur to me earlier

Alex G

The flipside to what I said is that they're also just kids in a first-love type scenario. It's alright if it's not perfect yet haha

Alex G

This is what I love to hear. Really nicely said, I appreciate the rewrite :D Season 1 was an interesting experience for me. I think I was writing Subaru off a little bit in the beginning because I didn't realize how intentional his character development was. As the season progressed and he started having breakdowns, I increasingly started questioning myself (though this may not have come across in videos, I'm not sure). There are plenty of ways in which I still carry identities that don't match reality, practice escapism, avoid confronting the things I need to confront... I think that's always going to be relatable, as we never really "make it," and I don't think that's the point (that itself might be a type of escapism), and the goal maybe being something more like a process than a state. I like what you said about how sometimes you got there first and vice versa. I wouldn't crash someone else's royal meeting, but I don't think I could lead an army into battle, not even close :D

Alex G

Maybe part of it is that our best qualities are so fundamental to us that they're automatic and require no attention, as natural as breathing.

Alex G

That's awesome, I had never heard that before. Not me :D Just a muay thai match I went to in Bangkok

Alex G

On that note I've been wondering about the title of this episode, "that's all this story is about." At face value it means it's a love story. But feels like there's more. That came to mind again reading what you shared about the additional narration.

Alex G

Thanks for that :D The confession scene felt somehow nostalgic for me. It feels very much like young love. And I was squirming in my seat imagining myself as Subaru. There's a feeling of... victory? And so you double down and get kind of lost in the feeling. In the back of your mind (maybe) you're questioning yourself a bit. Or maybe it feels like you're playing a role that you've seen before? Hard to explain. At any rate, can't wait to start season 2. My plan for now is 2 episodes a week but might do more depending on what else makes sense for the schedule.

Alex G

regarding the conversation between subaru and emilia, you gotta keep in mind that not only emilia is essentially lonely, subaru is too. he had shut himself in a room and was basically a loner. so you could argue that his obsession with emilia is a result of exactly that. i mean, i get why you would say it's awkward and unsettling if emilia's even questioning whether or not she should experience such happiness, but subaru and emilia are at the same level of loneliness i would honestly say. it's still not warranted of course to be downplaying your very existence as much as emilia does, but i find it to be more fitting if subaru's the one she shares her thoughts with, even if she doesn't know that subaru's essentially the same as her (i think subaru also is conscious about his past loneliness, especially after being granted return by death).

Bonzi Buddy

Speaking of ram, did you guys notice in a few cuts in this episode her hair was blue?? Maybe I'm dumb but I don't understand why this was done. Do you guys know what that was all about?

Starky

I think he just mispronounced Rams name. That’s why Emilia was confused

Anya Mcghee

Love learning these things

Peak zero day!!! Subaru is one of the most relatable and real character i have ever seen, for better and worst, something about his flaws and good parts being so clear and delibaretly the cause of his hardships is such a genius way of diving into so many topics about personal identity!

Aukar frank

The ending love confession still has this element of obsessiveness and blind love to it. By itself, I think it would be inadiquate, but season 2 does do a lot to poke holes in Subaru's flawed/obsessive love. This ending only serves to give a resolution to Subaru's resolve, as well as mend his and Emilia's relationship. I do try to give Subaru a bit more leeway when it comes to his attachment to her, given he has spent quite a bit more time with her than she has with him, at least this version of her. Still, makes total sense for some to feel discomfort during the scene.

So, Patreon deleted my comment after I submitted it, so I'll be rewriting it here. The discussion at the beginning of the episode was much longer in the novels. The key points are that Petelgeuse can only possess people that have a high affinity for spirits, and who do not have a contract with a spirit. Subaru's plan with using the Return By Death taboo was to force Petelgeuse to experience the pain of having his heart crushed so many times that he willingly left Subaru's body. He didn't realise that Satella would recognise Petelgeuse as a foreign entity in Subaru's body and force him out, so he got lucky that he didn't have to spam having his heart crushed lol. For Petelguese's death, there is some background info needed to fully understand it. Every land dragon in Re:Zero has the Divine Protection of Wind Evasion, which allows them to create a barrier that ignores air resistance and thus allow them to move very fast, very comfortably. If a part of someone's body leaves this barrier, then their entire body suddenly feels the air resistance all at once (you can see this in episode 11 [can't remember what episode that is in the Director's Cut] in a brief flashback where Subaru accidentally puts his arm outside of this barrier). Petelgeuse accidentally moved his hand out of this barrier, and because of that he became caught in the slipstream generated by the carriage, pulling him into the carriage's wheels. Contrary to popular belief, Subaru writing "The End" in his Gospel had NOTHING to do with his death. Subaru just wanted some swag points. And with this, you have completed Season 1 of Re:Zero, which adapts the first nine volumes and three arcs of the novels. In the novels we are currently on Volume 39 and have just begun the ninth Arc (out of a planned twelve), so as you may expect, there is still plenty to come. Plenty of development for our man Subaru, and plenty as well for the rest of the cast. Re:Zero is a very personal story to me. When it came out in 2016, episode 13 really affected me. Some of Subaru's beliefs were reflected in me, and I'd never seen a work that would depict such ugly things without holding back. And in that same work, the author also shows us that we can change, and that it is okay to love ourselves in spite of our flaws. I've followed this series for 8 years now, and I've been reading the novels for 4. I've watched Subaru grow and change alongside me. Sometimes he would learn a lesson before me, and sometimes I before him. Re:Zero has been an indispensable work in showing me the long road to learning to love myself, about recognising my weaknesses and strengths, and learning to overcome them. I have yet to see a work that expresses what it feels like to try and go from actively hating yourself, to becoming able to accept yourself. It's hard, it takes an incredibly long time, and you will relapse more times than you can count along the way. But in the end, it's possible. Just as Subaru is still on his own journey, I'm still on mine, and I can't wait to see where we both go. Anyways, enough with the rambling, you're at a point in your life where you're older and wiser than me, so I understand if Re:Zero doesn't resonate AS MUCH as it may for a younger crowd like me (just turned 21, so I first watched Re:Zero when I was 13 or so). I'm still glad that you've enjoyed it a lot, and that you recognise it's value. Thanks for your reactions, and I can't wait to see your thoughts on Arc 4, my (second) fav Arc. Have a wonderful day.

Kind of like Evangelion i think to get the most out of this show you need to be in a certain state of mind. Specifically for re:zero i think it's best for depressed people. That's why so many people are helped do much by it because i think the main thesis is self esteem. Even though subaru delves so deep into his own faults it trys to show you that self improvement is always possible and that your commendable traits can shine more brightly then your faults in the eyes of those around you. Rem's line of"what do you know of the Subaru that I see" is personally one of the most impactful lines I've heard. That and my daughter helped me see a light in me that was always muddled by how acutely aware of my faults I am.

The name "Patrasche" comes from a fictional story by W.E.B. Griffin set in Belgium that's very similar to that of Hachiko in Japan. It's the loyal dog who stays true to the human companion even after their death. On the other hand, Pastrasche or Alex's various and sundry other names are not anything I have knowledge of, haha. (Also, random, but just something I've been wondering for a while. From the back, the guy who gets knocked down in the boxing ring during the outro looks very similar to Alex. That's not you, right?)

Here we are! I absolutely love Season 1. Loved all your thoughts on the ways in which Subaru has grown, and I really don’t think there’s another show that puts their protagonist through the wringer in this particular way. Also loved your thoughts on the talk with Emilia at the end. Obviously, on one hand, there is a lot of beauty. Subaru is apologizing, acknowledging his faults to her, and really putting himself out there. But, Emilia is still not quite there. I won’t say too much as to not get into spoilers, but their dynamic still has a lot of work to go through before it can become truly healthy, despite the beauty. I think of that talk sort of like From Zero. It’s messy, but it is honest. In the novels, this narration follows the end of that scene. “This was a tale about earning that time, and nothing more. This was a tale about missed opportunities, continuing along different paths, remaining lost, and nothing more. Everything had happened so that a single insecure boy could share his feelings with a single insecure girl. This was a tale of striving to do exactly that one thing——and nothing more.” I love Betelgeuses conclusion here as well, his words echoing Subarus from earlier in the season. And I agree, there is a sadness to him in these eps. He’s such an iconic antagonist. Some minor things I like, as well as some cut content. Love that Julius gets the coolest fight, of course he does. I love Otto, and I especially love Patrasche. She’s the best. For the cut content, when Subaru writes on the book, the words don’t get translated in the anime unfortunately, but it says “The End” in the lugunican language. All that writing in the mansion for this one glorious moment. And I didn’t mention it last ep, but Subaru not saving the so called “npcs” does weigh on him in the novels in his inner dialogue. I won’t get into it too much, but the story will explore the nature of “who should Subaru save” and the morality of return by death in the future. And finally, that cliffhanger. Won’t say much, but thanks for all your insights and thoughts, loved seeing you go on this journey. Super excited for the OVA and S2!

Thanks for the Season finale, Alex! I just wanted to convey that I think you'd be pleased to know that your reservations on Subaru & Emilia's awkward romantic relationship is not only NOT unfounded at all -- but also a direct topic of focus for the episodes to come. There is something admirable about Subaru's owning up to his responsibilities, but it's like you said -- does he really know Emilia that well at all? Especially when he's really only seen her good qualities? And what about Emilia, who's lonely to such an exaggerated extent that there's no way she won't be flattered by the fact that someone else other than Puck is showing affection for her for the first time for God knows how long. Emilia's cloak that prevents recognition is interesting, because in retrospective it shows that both the times she visited the village and during the snow festival -- none of the villagers actually knew their half-elf patron is in their midst. This completely explains their rejection of Emilia when she knocked on their doors asking them to evacuate, because in their POV they've never met her before. The additional cool detail here is that Petra, for whatever gifted reason, is able to see through the cloak's recognition prevention to an extent. Not only did she piece it together that Emilia was the one visiting with Subaru, but also winked at Subaru (who was cloaked) right before getting on the carriage with Emilia. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Season 2, and think it just might elevate this show into one of your favorites. Not only do every development we saw in Season 1 get further enhanced and followed through, but there's just so much more worldbuilding and even more mysteries to be unveiled. Above all, though, the characters are definitely what carries this show. And the best way I can describe Season 2's elevation from Season 1 is that it actually shares A LOT of similarities to the tone shift of Vinland Saga's S2 vs S1. IMO the characterization is beyond incredible while also sporting an even better woven plot in regards to Season 1. Thanks for the reactions, can't wait for the continuation! PS: Season 2 doesn't have a Director's Cut version, but it does contain A LOT of extended length episodes (25-29mins) in attempt to leave as little cut content as possible. It's very much a passion project, similar to Vinland S2. A continuation of the current 2 episodes a week or even more would be incredible as the pacing of Season 2 is tightly packed, but I think in the end -- we're honestly just looking forward to whatever your schedule cooks up. See you next Season!
