Absolute braindead moment

AleksD

Something funny just happened -- I saw the interesting comment above about meanings. Then in the next episode, I happened to notice Killua say something that sounded like "O re wa shikaku", as he sat on the bed -- right after he flashed back to Morel's "You're lower than a loser!" That got me thinking with my basic-ass Japanese: "O re wa shikaku" sounds like "I am shikaku", which makes no sense in this context, if shikaku means "assassin". The subs say the line means "I am no longer qualified", which makes more sense here. It becomes even weirder if you rewind and listen to Morel similarly tell him: "O ma e wa shikaku" -- "You're an assassin" again makes no sense in this context, esp for a kid he just met. But again, the subs say the line means instead "You're disqualified." Google Translate agrees roughly that "shikaku" means "qualifications" -- oddly, it doesn't even mention "assassin". (Different kanji?) So, basically, could it be that Netero simply meant "We sent 2 dis/unqualified to the nearest village"? That would make absolute sense, since Knuckle and Shoot were in fact not qualified to enter the NGL at first. The subs got the meaning right every time except the last, when Netero borrowed Morel's words to describe his students 😅️

SoreDakeNoKoto

The way you have explained it at least makes more sense now, as Netero is looking for hunters to go in and kill the enemy. Thanks for the breakdown! I always enjoy reading your language lessons!

Flattered you'd think of me. It is too bad we don't have a discussion pad for patrons that Alex could turn off so we could just ask questions without spoiling things. I replied to your comment below so you'd have a better chance of seeing it. I didn't really have anything to add to Ep 85, haha, so I wasn't going to say anything on it. :)

Ryan

Wanted to make sure you saw this so answering here: Netero refers to the two people he put in the nearby village as 刺客 ('shikaku', literally a person whose purpose in being hired is 刺す: to take someone out / to stab them). That's precisely the same word that the Zoldycks were called when they were brought in by the mafia to deal with the Phantom Troupe in Yorkshin City. I'm just a linguist. I can't even guess *why* he called them that, but that's the word. 二人の刺客を放った (I/we sent out two assassins) Maybe Netero thinks that's what Hunters really are or should be?

Ryan

Ryan, I've been waiting for you to post on Ep 85 so I could ask this, but...**SPOILERS (I think)** Was the English translation "assassins" correct in referring to Knuckle and Shoot? That word has always hit me as odd referring to those two.

The fact that you describe Hunter x Hunter as a "reskinned Dragonball action shounen show" proves that you don't actually know what you're talking about and you DEFINITELY don't understand the Chimera Ant arc even slightly if you think it's purpose is nothing more than being a big power level circlejerk.

Jo

You taking this WAY too seriously when it's just a reskinned Dragonball action shounen show. I did say that Nen powers were a bit too much for my tastes back at the arena episodes, you can check for yourself. But Phantom Troupe, Hisoka, Kurapika and Killua's plotlines were interesting. Now we're not exploring any of these. If your attitude is typical of the fandom ofthe show...

Arakis

I am wasting my time just to drive home how terrible your arguments are. Your issues with Nen and the Chimera Ants are entirely covered during the Heavens Arena Arc and at the start of the Chimera Ant Arc, respectively — you have not been paying attention. HxH is fiction, and as with all fiction, suspension of disbelief is a given. What is incorrect about your point is the degree to which HxH requires you to do so. If the Nen spinning tops way back in the Heavens Arena Arc were "already pushing it", then you have not even suspended your disbelief enough to accept the power system this entire anime is centred around. HxH at this point has barely delved into a character that would be considered a true Nen master, with Gon and Killua only just learning the last of the fundamental Nen techniques during the Greed Island Arc. This is not "peak level bs with regards to power levels" in the slightest. Your last point is just as nonsensical. First, this is essential narrative building for this arc and not filler. Then again, you did not pay attention to the Nen fundamental explanations, so you definitely aren't paying enough attention here to know.  Second, Gon's storyline from the first episode is to find Ging and see why being a Hunter was so important to him. Not only is Gon actively exploring what makes a true Hunter, he is also accompanying the closest character to Ging we have seen thus far—learning about his father and developing the skills he needs to find him. You also fail to acknowledge that this is not even the end of the anime, which in itself is from a manga that is still being written to this day, with the story and all its plotlines still being explored. All of your criticisms stem from a sheer lack of understanding of the anime and are therefore invalid.

kompy

It’s been a while since I’d seen this part of this arc and gotta say don’t remember the conclusion to rammots arc too be so….. wholesome? Lol

M2GZ

I'll add to your analogy. Your co-worker also birthed you, and she birthed you to be an sales manager, and also birthed your entire sales team. And THEN later birthed your boss as a board member.

Fizzle

"Getting hit by Nen attack teaches me Nen" "Eating someone who has mastered Nen makes the Queen give birth to creatures who know Nen inately." Not to mention the mixing and matching of species, learning language and the clothing and the culture. The show was pushing it the moment they introduced Nen spinning tops. It might not be a bad story but it's going more and more over the top, requiring more and more suspension of disbelief. I don't care about magic ants. Gon and Killua will crush them and get stronger and then we are back on the main plot. This is a filler so far. We are not resolving Gin's storyline and we are not resolving phantom troupe storyline.

Arakis

Wait what ??? That is a valid opinion ??? Bruuuuuuuuuuuuh whatdahell Like all those upcoming sub plots that literally disprove your point ???

Pitou my GOAT

Vincent

.....😭

"Kite has a lot on his shoulders." I'm just gonna leave this here.

Szandor Kane

You totally missed the point of the Chimera ant arc, congratulations 💀

We've finally reached peak level bs with regards to power levels. We Dragonball now. I'm only skipping to the watch the fight parts since the story seems completely meaningless.

Arakis

If I remember right the English dub is “Meow I understand” LOL

Sunny

I rewatched her entrance a few times. It's done so well. For Pokkle and Ponzu, I'm thinking back to the Hunter Exam and thinking, look at all these characters they're setting up long term. That turned out to be right but not in the way I meant it 💀

Alex G

Oh yeah!

Alex G

Pitou’s introduction is sooo good. Rammot being immediately humbled is also very satisfying. The office coworker giving birth thing was pretty spot on lol. And poor Pokkle, they really brought him and Ponzu back just to have them die in the most gruesome ways possible. I really like seeing Pitou just be born with absurd power, as it’s so drastically different to every other character in the show. Even then, it’s just a more extreme version of the already very strong chimera ants.

Oak

"Was the stripping necessary?" He was already stripped to be prepared for food. You can see when he's in the bones that he has nothing on. The detailssssssssssssssss

Sunny

Oh if isnt the birth of my favorite character! Pitou <3

Sonozaki Shinji

Lol I haven't seen that movie but yeah

Alex G

I can't believe rammot just got boss babied

OptimalCaboose

Togashi really goes strength for strength when it comes to character introductions. The presence of Pitou in just one episode is unrivaled.

Chris Sharpe

I can't remember which line but I think I remember noticing that at one point they switch the referring to him as "it"

Alex G

Neferpitou uses the first-person pronoun "boku", which is usually for men, but which originally meant a faithful servant. In either case, I want to call a little attention to the last line Neferpitou says about Pockle: "are wa mou iranai." They translated it as "I don't need him anymore," but that's a little off in my opinion. It's closer to "that thing isn't necessary anymore." Neferpitou is referring to Pockle as just "are" (あれ, that thing), lower than any lifeform. That's different from when he's first discovered under the bones and called "ikita hito" (a live person).

Ryan

December 7th, 1989, Satoru Gojo was born - and the balance of the world changed. That was the energy this episode gave 😂

To think one of the 3 guards is introduced as basically a god just shows how deep in shit Gon and Killua really are.
