Yes, Arakis, haha. :) Join the dark side. I have to say, it's a pretty cool moment when he says 'sousou no Frieren' and your whole body goes into chills with like, "ooooohhhhh, the whole series title did not mean what I thought it meant."

My headcanon for how Lugner survived against Frieren is the same reason why he survived a Zoltraak from Fern. Any other demon would’ve died, but since he can control his blood he’s able to use it to keep himself alive.

Oh shit!

fyi this post is missing the Frieren tags

I think the problem is that like... Demons kill humans because they want to. The elder in the flashback with Himmel specifically points out that Demons don't hunt humans because they need to eat them. They hunt and kill humans simply because it is their instinct to do so, and it's seemingly an instinct that supersedes self-preservation. Any chance for Demons to change could only exist at the individual level, if it could happen at all.

I think the reason why Zenitsu doesn't work as a character for me is that there's no character development. His sleep mode actively makes him avoid it because it robs him of all the chances to actually conquer his fear and protect people. Even if Stark whined even more than Zenitsu, I'd still consider him a better character simply because he actually mans up when he needs to instead of using a bullshit get out of jail free card.

BirthdayParty

I think the one that works best for me is Frieren of the End. Still carries the Funeral connotations while also sounding menacing once it's true meaning is explained.

The main demon, Lugnar is Sakunas voice actor

aahhhhhhh love this episode because frieren definitely gives mob vibes like you said... absolute beast but isn't obsessed with her own power >w< she's so cool!!

Crystalrose

haikyuu is so good you'll wanna join a volleyball team after the first season lmao

Crystalrose

I appreciate your willingness to be as understanding and pliable a person towards the demons, as it portrays your irl approach to humanity. People deserve a chance or even many. But, yeah the irony of you seeking any out for them, a way for them to change in a good way, only falls within their tactics. Kinda what demons would do, they aren't human.

Great episode and loved your thoughts on it as well. I laughed when you brought up haikyuu cause that’s immediately where my head went when I heard the show mention geniuses.

Cornhorn

Nahhhh I can't with the comparisons of Stark and Zenitsu xD Zenitsu is a constant and mostly unfunny joke, with a super powerful move to make up for all his whining Stark is an actual character who feels fear but works through it

> none of those titles are good or attention-catching "Good" is a bad adjective to use. It's completely subjective. I do agree they're not as fantasy sounding as "Beyond journey's end". They imply a horror or mystery genre. By the way, the author clearly wanted to name his work "funeral rites", which is the closest translation. The translators' liberty to localize it and make it more marketable might be effective, as you say, and I tend to agree, but also... questionable. I, for one, am in favour of respecting the original intentions. Perhaps I should just learn the language and stop relying on translations at all *shudder*

Arakis

I'm sorry but none of those titles are good or attention-catching at all. The people who chose the translation did the best they could to convey the meaning of the title in a way that still leads to people wanting to actually watch the show. There's more to titles that just perfectly accurate translations.

ATableWithPants

"Funeral Rites Frieren" "Funeral Procession Frieren" "Frieren Requiem" Would be much better titles & closer to the original & vague enough to avoid spoiling the reveal of this episode. They probably wanted to censor ANY reference to [death].

Arakis

The problem is it's hard to translate a nuanced title like that without giving it away. They cant just call the series "Frieren the Slayer" because it gives the immediate impression to the audience of her being a badass protag which isn't meant to be given away until later. They also cant use something like the direct translation you mentioned because it's just clunky. I don't really think there was a great alternative, but it's nice to let people know the depth of the Japanese title, so thanks for that.

Rekway

That's why I said in ep. 1 that the english title is b.s. Sousou no Frieren // "Frieren who accompanies to the grave" 1. All her prior companions she spent years with, she buried them. 2. She's leading her current group to the land of the dead 3. She's been slaying demons and sending them to the grave (Frieren the slayer)

Arakis

You asked if something was a HxH reference early on in this episode. You will be asking this again later in the season 😂 Also something I like about the magic system in this series is how the lore behind it is drip-fed but so far never explicitly explained. Very satisfying for discussions. The same goes for demons and elves.

Frieren is truly a gamer. First the excessive loot collecting, now we learn she’s been farming the demons so much she’s topped the leaderboards. Also, you’re really making a good argument for me to finally watch Haikyuu.

Thanks for the talks/reactions Goodwin, I love you!
