Wow great detail!

That was my feeling, yeah. But also it's that thing where when you're infatuated you end up getting pulled toward anything that has an association with a person, going out of your way to give yourself even just a long shot of contact...

I remember being young and being a bit freaked out when someone pointed my parents dropped me off in a new car. Like "How did they notice?" It made me realize other people study details about my life with no reason.

Frierein didn't "just learn" Qual's spell, she's had 80 years to study it. Himmel: He knows what you want for dessert. He knows where you'll be in 80 years. He knows if you've been nice or naughty.. Heisen's favourite food is sour grapes. What was Frieren's recently learned spell list again?

Arakis

When you mentioned that you had a thing for lists, I have never felt so seen. I’ve also had ppl point that out about me and it’s funny how the act of making the list is fulfilling. I think I just like making the gears in my head turn.

Today's translation is for the demon Qual! His name means "agony" or "anguish". Fitting for a demon who developed what was at the time the deadliest magic spell in existence.

I did too. The whole concept is such a fun idea

Yeah, it's wild that it took literal seconds, and a single example of modern defensive spells for Qual to recreate and understand the limits of them. Had he lived even a day longer, who knows what could've happened.

I really love this show’s take on a fantasy world’s magic system. They hype up Qual for inventing this super op magic, but in hindsight, of course after 80 years humanity has had time to study it. The musket comparison you made feels very apt. I feel like even on a smaller scale you’d notice the same thing. On a personal level it can boil down to encountering something life changing, which turns into a catalyst that can spur long term growth. Maybe I’m overthinking this a bit, but I just found that part of the episode particularly interesting.

It is so not over

I love how Fern's and Frieren's relationship develops so quickly over these first two episodes. This series is so comforting for me. It's full of so much soul.

So we know Himmel had complete faith in Frieren comming back to defeat Qual. Do you think the reason he visited the village every year was just because he hoped to run into her there?

That part about how humans in 80 years took zoltraak, the then most powerful piercing spell that was known, and implemented it in such a way that Fern thought it was literally just basic attack magic, is what completely locked me in I think on this show. And yeah, the action in it is incredible, and I think because it's so sparing it makes it that much more awesome to watch. Plus, the entire series is so beautifully animated already. It's just such an enjoyable watch

The phrase ‘paradigm shift’ comes to mind when we get the explanation of Qual’s killing spell. The world of magic was very different before everyone studied and adapted to it. Fern was confused when she blocked his first spell because she was born after the paradigm shift and the spell isn’t anything special to her.

Qual’s skill should not be underestimated. He developed a spell so powerful the entire world of magic came together to learn it, analyze it, and defend against it and mere moments after being unsealed and seeing it once he learned the new defensive magic and realized its weakness of using up lots of mana. Had he somehow escaped here the new spells and tactics he could have created would likely be catastrophic.

We’re so back
