Hunter x Hunter Episode 35 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Hunter X Hunter 35, The x True x Pass, Gon passes the Hunter Exam and that's... great? I guess. That was last week's goal and we've moved on.

Really great discussion!

Tati

Honestly, while I knew you would like Hunter x Hunter, I wasn’t sure which specific aspects of the show you would attach to. But now I can say with near certainty that, having seen your reactions, Hunter x Hunter will easily be one of the most impactful shows you react to (and this is with all of the love and interest I have for those previous series).

Chris Sharpe

The fact that Gon actually punched Hisoka in the face and it didn’t just feel like a win the story was giving Gon and felt like something he really earned was super hype. I giggled with glee.

Spizami

Oh yes I say, oh yes ;)

Timo

It's not only a metaphorical connection to their characters/will, since Nen is directly connected to their own resolve and willpower, so I'd fathom a guess that you're correct, it definitely correlates with how they behave and even fight. Bombastic, outgoing, limitlessly talented Gon, sneaky, calculating and considering what he's capable of even unassuming Killua.

Szandor Kane

Whoo yeah you definitely can’t help comparing, that’s natural. But I love the Zushi appreciation here and definitely enjoyed the dialogue that followed afterward. It resonated with me.

Manny

:/ Tough crowd

M2GZ

Never thought about it like this before, but I wonder if the water divination test was used metaphorically to indicate characters? Gon's water divination overflowing with such force and cracking the container seems allegorical to Gon's drive outpacing his current ability. Killua's feels somewhat obvious, while the outside isn't changed - internally he's made huge progress.

Peak fiction tbh

Chris Sharpe

the show will beat you over the head with the categories, no need to worry. Also real life water divination is probably myers-brigg personality test lol.

Stephen

nah

Anya Mcghee

a very merry christmas to you

Hatsu categories are here so it’s time to update the “information we can share so far list again”. Obviously there’s a lot more to these, but I’ve just listed the basics of what was explained this episode. I guess these are your study materials lol. What we know so far: Nen is the ability to control one’s life energy or “aura”. Everyone has this “aura” but it takes time, talent, and skill to learn how to use it. Major Nen principles: Ten: The ability to maintain one’s aura around oneself, which can harden the body, as well as slow the effects of aging. Zetsu: Essentially the opposite of Ten. Zetsu suppresses one’s aura so that none leaks out. Useful for concealing one’s presence, as well as recovering from fatigue. Ren: Used to bring forth more aura than is passively released. This can then be used however the user intends. Hatsu: Using one’s Nen to do “something”. Basically an ability, whatever it may be. Ex. Hisoka’s Bungee Gum. *Hatsu Categories: *Enhancer: Uses aura to strengthen something, including oneself. Ex. Hisoka’s playing cards. *Emitter: Propelling aura away from oneself. Basically anything involving aura going away from you. *Transmuter: Altering the qualities of one's aura. Ex. Hisoka’s Bungee Gum *Conjurer: Manifesting one’s aura into something physical. *Manipulator: Uses aura to control something, being objects, people, etc. Ex. Gido’s Spinning Tops. *Specialist: Literally anything that doesn’t fit into the other categories. *My bad text version of the Hatsu hexagon shown this episode: Enhancer Emitter Transmuter Manipulator Conjurer Specialist Extra Terms: (Generally not important to remember the names, more so what they do) Gyo: Subcategory of Ren, where instead of bringing forth aura across one’s whole body, it’s focused in a particular spot, commonly the eyes to allow one to see hidden Nen. In: Subcategory of Zetsu, where like Gyo, it’s a more focused version of its parent term. Instead of suppressing all aura, just the aura you want to remain hidden is suppressed. Ex. Hisoka’s Bungee Gum during Hisoka vs Kastro.

First off, I’m glad we got the start of the fight this episode, and it’s also easily the best animated fight yet. HxH came out in a time where seasonal anime wasn’t really a thing yet, so they basically aired an episode a week for 148 weeks. While far from perfect, its animation quality is amazingly consistent, which is impressive for airing episodes for 3 straight years. And here we are, Hatsu categories have been introduced and it’s easy to see why people love Nen so much. While it obviously gets expanded upon much more, there is some stuff that isn’t mentioned in the anime so I can talk about that a little. Firstly, when the water divination says you’re an enhancer, that means that it is your strongest Nen category, not necessarily that you are a 100% enhancer. And even if you were, the whole point of Nen is that you can learn any ability from any category, it’ll just take more effort if it doesn’t come naturally. The whole thing really does feel like a video game, which is why I have been hoping for a HxH RPG type game forever now. Also, as a New Yorker, (not from the city but still) I have definitely seen the mentality you mentioned. Having been to the city countless times on account of being like an hour away, I get that attachment, but personally I would like to travel more. Listening to all your stories has definitely become a factor, but the idea of traveling to foreign countries more is appealing to me. Oh, and of course a Merry Christmas!

Merry Schwingmas everyone

M2GZ

1) "schwing" is an interesting (not bad or good, just genuinely interesting) translation choice for 'dokyuun'. It's creepy, yes, but it's normally the sound of feelings like chest-tightening when you're in love. It's the feeling of being squeezed or that you're heartstrings are being stretched to their limit. The image of elasticity and inappropriateness are probably why it was chosen. 2) I'll just follow up and say I also thoroughly enjoyed the discussion; this is another one of those talks that I wish more people would watch and contemplate. 3) Genuinely surprised you say you don't have a natural aptitude for languages. In the research literature, what makes someone good at language learning is highly debated, but pattern recognition, working memory capacity, attention to detail, and attention control / inhibition are commonly agreed to be important. Pretty much everyone acknowledges that "motivation" is the most important factor, but pinning down what that means / whether that does mean or has to mean the same thing to different people, whether consistency in motivation is important, and whether we could measure any of that, are all open questions.

Merry Christmas ! I'm curious to see how this skill "tree" will be expanded on over time because I can imagine so many different takes on it

Alex G

I don't think kastro was wrong on focus on the double technique, but i think if he choosed a more compatible skill he would have more chances against hisoka, just like bungie gum fits hisoka so well without being an overpowered skill, also merry xmas!

Sonozaki Shinji

Thanks! It's something I think about a lot.

Alex G

One of your best discussions in recent memory with the section about Zushi and the examples of how tradeoffs or downgrades that mean nothing to you can be considered upgrades with a wider lens.

bl0odm1st

And then they doubled down on the schwing with Gon and Killua

Alex G

Merry Christmas!

Alex G

Oh no, the infamous "schwing" moment...

Ruma Risto

It's burning me up not to add to Wing's explanation. He really doesn't go into much detail at all, but we get the next half-ish of the nen category info quite a bit later

Sunny

Merry Christmas! Each and every one of you!
