Steins Gate, sub or dub?

Or start with one and switch to the other based on comments? ^^

(Next upload is JJK, followed by episode 1 of Steins Gate)

Comments

The dub for Steins;Gate is also an amazing *localization* of the original material. I think a few people saying jokes won’t make sense is because they assume the dub will essentially ‘read the subtitles out loud’ but this is not the case at all because of how brilliantly they localize it. An unprecedented thing regarding this dub, is that the protagonist’s VA is also the script writer - Steins;Gate has the most natural dialogue I have ever seen because of this. I really think this English adaptation is something special. I’m usually a big advocate for sub, but I think this is *the* exception.

Karlsson

Can we do the japanese sub with the dub translations? Everyone wins.

Stephen

Despite this being my literal favorite dub of all time. Easily over other goat dubs like death note and code geass. The sub is simply too good with okarin, which is saying alot because okarin in the dub is a highlight, and not just "a highlight for a typical dub" no no no he was truly exceptional It's just simply that okarin in the sub is THAT good. Which makes sense if you know who the voice actor is. Anyway. Most importantly kurisu imo is good in the dub, but only good, and too tsundere like. While In the sub her va does more than just good. And is much more dere than tsun Last note I'd like to add , this may be a hot take. But I think the writing team who redid alot of the dubs dialog knocked it out of the park. Despite changes and or localization usually being done terribly, I actually think it was the CORRECT choice pretty much every time it was done. Although it's unfortunate there's no way to do the sunavabiiiiichh line in English hahaha xD Anyway. One of the rare cases where I actually wouldn't care much either way. While In any other show I'm always disappointed if it's a dub reaction , and if it's actually bad it's simply unwatchable and I have to skip the reaction like the fruits basket reactions unfortunately considering that's one of my favorite shows

Troco72

the voice for Daru in sub is worse than nails on a chalkboard but other than that it's pretty good, dub is just better for steins gate especially with how complicated it is

Jeremy Ocasio

wym apparently. Cyberpunks dub was great

Rayn

Frieren is definitely the best anime of this season by far and I say that as a huge JJK fan.

Sal Inger

I prefer sub but whichever works for you better. On another topic: Can you add `Frieren` to your next poll. It's a currently airing show and a very unique anime and I think your discussions over it would be top tier!!

mapo picker

I agree

M2GZ

The dub changes too many iconic lines

Steve.

I honestly don’t care which is chosen so long as it doesn’t flip after like cyberpunk did. Too jarring for a first timer.

bl0odm1st

The controversy is genuinely hilarious 😂

bl0odm1st

Because why would you? I watched both the the sub voices were VERY flat and generic. Anyone who thinks the sub sounds better likely always chooses sub. There’s no logical reason to choose a clearly inferior option. This is why the sub for fmab almost won the polls too, people just choose sub so they can feel quirky and unique

Seth

@Chris Haha, thanks! I love the English language and being a professional translator probably helps a bit

Ruma Risto

Ngl this argument always annoys me that just because you voted sub your somehow a “sub elitist” like maybe people just enjoy the Japanese voice acting more and that’s ok:).

M2GZ

Just my personal opinion so it definitely doesn’t apply to everyone but I couldn’t get through more than a minute of Lucy talking before giving up on the dub. It just came off as cheesy and cringe. But if others liked it I’m glad 👍🏻

M2GZ

Wdym? The cyberpunk dub was apparently “good” and well…. yah. Mha was done in dub and so was mob and fmab. Most people are willing to go with the dub when it’s equal or if not better than the sub. If people are majority voting for sub than there’s most likely a reason.

M2GZ

I dunno why people keep saying that the Edgerunners dub wasn't good.

BirthdayParty

@astroplace I worded it kinda weirdly in hindsight but I was addressing to Seth there, wasn’t actually saying that people who hadn’t seen it voted . Agree with your points, even if I still prefer the dub.

Chris Sharpe

both are amazing, went for sub though because of THAT line read

FriedChickenDeluxe

@Ruma Wow, third language? That’s awesome, you write extremely well. As someone who is terrible in terms of learning languages, I have a lot of respect for people who are proficient in multiple languages.

Chris Sharpe

Why? The sub always wins the polls regardless of whether or not it’s good. He should just watch an episode of each and decide for himself

Seth

Yeah rip to Goodwin ever getting to watch any dubs again on this channel if this high caliber of one is getting blown out by double the votes lol. Sadge

Jake White

The dub is pretty fantastic and well directed. Lots of charm for the show comes directly from that preformance. Pretty surprised to see sub winning by such a margin

Logan Bradford

I didn't have any difficulties following the engsub version even though I have ADHD and English is only my third language. I'm sure Alex will be all right.

Ruma Risto

I voted sub cause the voice acting as superb but I hope you pick the one which you will enjoy the most as that’s the most important.

Spizami

The losing side of the poll will always be the majority of the comments I just hope he sticks to the polls winner.

M2GZ

Why everyone acting like the subs are hard to follow you literally just read it, if you like the english voices more that's fine but that argument doesn’t rlly make any sense too me

M2GZ

Y’all said that for cyberpunk and well……..

M2GZ

I wouldn't normally comment on a sub/dub poll or debate since I watch all shows in both sub and dub. However, this show is not a show that relies on visuals or action scenes to tell a story. It is very heavy on dialogue and each line missed can heavily impact future scenes in a negative way. As you are someone reacting to it, I would 100% recommend the dub for a reactor watching it just to prevent the situation where lines are missed when glancing up to the camera when reacting/commenting. Regardless, hope you enjoy and I'll watch either no matter what.

Aquamirage

It's simple sub is just better. You guys are on some lethal levels of copium right now. I get it, you guys enjoyed the dub and want other people to enjoy the show the same way you did which is fine but most people prefer sub in this anime and most other anime for a reason.. 😅

astroplace

pollgate 2.0. controversy ensues

Stephen

Dude, why would they vote if they haven’t watched the show? I’ve been on the receiving end of shows being voted that I haven’t seen and there’s no reason to participate don’t know what you are talking about.

Chris Sharpe

People always blindly vote sub on every poll. Since a lot of people only watch sub they’ll vote sub even if they haven’t watched the show

Seth

I’d like to hear why? I genuinely think the sub voices are bland in comparison and less emotional, even though I usually watch sub

Seth

Ah man, I'm assuming the sub isn't going to have all the mid 2000s western internet culture references. One of my favourite parts of the show.

Vincent

Huh? He focuses the most out of any reaction guy ever.

RB Gist

quality aside, the translation changes in the dub make all the difference. if he used japanese va with the dub subtitles I'd be fine with that

Stephen

Love both but the dub's voice, especially the work on the main protagonist is really something else (same actor as Erwin Smith). Michael Tatum did an amazing job with his interpretation that you can't feel with a subtitle. Anyhow i'm so happy that you will start this show, I was waiting for this when i first watch your FMA's reaction and discovered your really interesting sense of analysis.

Clément

Just because a show has an amazing dub, that's no reason to always pick it over the sub. It's not like Steins; Gate has a bad sub, I'd even argue it's one of the best. It also just happens to have one the best dubs out there too. So I'd say that sure, there's always an element of sub elitism in the situations, but it's also just an amazing sub. Hence why I believe it has the majority.

Oak

I've watched this show more times then I can count, in both sub and dub, and I still voted sub. I love both, but ultimately prefer the sub. It's possible to have an opinion without calling out other people for reasons you made up.

Oak

The sub makes perfect sense. I voted for sub, despite also loving the dub. For me it was a case of watching sub first, loving it, then watching the dub and loving it even more. Then I watched it again in sub and realized I love the VA work the most in the sub. As good as the main character is in the dub, that quality is equally matched by the sub.

Oak

I'd personally just pick one and just go with it, whether it's the poll winner or not. Going back and forth a lot when you're new to the show can be a little disjointing.

Oak

Well I guess this proves that no matter how great the dub is if its put up to a poll sub always wins. Even though anyone who's watched it know that it's on of the best dubs out there. I'm not salty and I don't mind either way just that if there was gonna be any show to watch in dub it's this one.

Slim Cognito

Yeahhhh ngl these poll results are kinda depressing tbh lol. Not just for all the hard work that was put into translating the script for the best possible experience of foreigners, but also because Goodwin himself has said multiple times that he enjoys good dubs. So if this dub (which is generally agreed by both critics and the community at large to be one of the best dubs in the industry, with FMAB/Bebop/YYH/etc) is getting absolutely blown out in a poll like this, what chances do any other dubs have of ever winning a poll in the future? Lol and that’s sad for both us patrons that enjoy em, and for Goodwin himself to not get to experience good dubs here and there anymore cause most people seem to want him to watch their personal preference rather than his own.

Jake White

I agree. This is one of the few times I think the dub is better choice.

Rayn

I would suggest trying both, either with two different episodes or quickly rewatching the same episode later with another method and choose what you think with the poll results still in mind. Or just skip all of that and go with the majority, don’t want to tell you how to do your job.

Chris Sharpe

Dub for me as someone who mostly watched the sub. I feel like certain emotional lines hit a bit more (not necessarily because of the voice acting and more the act of not having to follow the subtitles) and the humor flows a bit more smoothly without the localization. Both portray a lot of personality, even if I slightly prefer the dub in that regard and there is a lot of incredible talent across the board.

Chris Sharpe

That character is actually the main reason I would side with the dub. I thought that the attempt to portray her as being childlike and moe was hammed up in sub (or a I guess toned down in the dub technically). I feel like the dub portrays the necessary aspects to her character and makes her childlike, without feeling like a literal young child (although it is not a major difference and highly subjective)

Chris Sharpe

Everyone who voted sub never heard the dub. It’s been retranslated to make more sense. I only love the show for the dub. The main character dub especially.. phenomenal

Stephen

Please pick the dub. The sub is nearly impossible to follow if you aren’t focusing to a degree a reaction tends to not allow

Mortis

One of the main characters' voice is absolutely insufferable in the sub and really good in the dub, and pretty much all the female voices are very generic and flat in the sub, so please by all that is holy, pick the dub.

Ad

Y’all sub elitists just blindly vote sub on every single poll. The dub never wins cause y’all have a weird obsession with the Japanese language. It’s not a fair poll when most of y’all haven’t even watched steinsgate

Seth

Are we going to expect a double upload of JJK to catch up to their upload schedule?

Bababooey

Ah yes, the dude screaming to not let majority vote take its course is definitely not the child here.

James Ancester

I mean the majority of the people agree that the sub is better and it's what won the pole so I don't see a reason to argue 🤷

astroplace

True, buuuuut... you can't deny that Miyano Mamoru is also spectacular VA and truly brings out the sheer insanity of Kyouma's character.

James Ancester

Cap asf, none of the Japanese voices fit the characters they just sound like normal voices. The English VA for the MC fits him perfectly

Seth

I watched both versions and the dub had far better voice acting

Seth

Wym “probably better” The dub is clearly better. We don’t know Japanese so the humor hits better in English and the MC’s VA is far better in english

Seth

DONT PICK SUB The Dub is wayyy better idk why these kids want everything to be in Japanese they prob never even watched steingate

Seth

In Dub, the main character is voiced by Iida from MHA. and he does a great job!

DontStealMyFish

Man I'm surprised that the sub is winning. The series is very detailed and I personally find it harder to follow in the sub.

Jak

Thankfully the discussion that goes on around here will probably help with that. I say this as someone that will probably have a lot to say on more than a few episodes lol.

Oak

Just alternate sub and dub each episode

TrueAuraGuardian

The sub is probably better but I've never seen a reactor able to keep up with the sub and not miss important details.

RageKage

Definitely one of the better dubs, but the performance of the Japanese va's can't be topped.

Tempheror

This series has a lot of localized Japanese references and jokes made throughout that kind of don’t really land as well for non-native speakers and westerners. The English dub voice actor for the main character, J. Michael Tatum, actually spent time in Japan working directly with translators to better globalize a lot of the material and make it more approachable by foreign audiences, without losing any key content. Some voices are better in the subbed version, some are better in the dubbed version. It’s all about what you feel will give you the best personal experience with the series. So if you wanted to test an episode or 2 out in each, that would be fine too lol. Still throwin my vote for the dub tho

Jake White

Agreed. She sounds like a completely different character in the dub

Ruma Risto

Haha that works :)

Alex G

I will be honest in that I haven't listened to the dub. However 1. The original voice acting doesn't have any glaring issues, 2. As it happens, the japanese VAs are following the screenwritter's and author's instructions, and the play is writen in their language. Dub VAs have to rely on second-hand guidance, i.e. what they interprete from the subs and how the original VA did it. Be it 3%, 5% or 10%, *something* will deviate from how the creator envisioned it. Still, this is the n'th time I hear that Steins;Gate english dub is good. I really should check it out.

Arakis

Hence i have now voted for both

AryTheDog

And you may need 2 watches anyway to understand the show haha.

Sam B

This one is so hard because both casts for the MC especially are equally perfect

AryTheDog

This is not full metal alchemist 💀 the dub is bad for this show especially for a curtain main character *cough* TUTURU *cough*

astroplace

Wuhu, both are amazing imo, rly happy that you are reacting to this show><

Marko

Whichever one ends up winning, I’d suggest re-watching the show later with the other, if you like it. Both casts do a really good job, especially the actor for the main character.
