@Pye It's semantics. What I am referring to when I say "animation" includes the Directional issues that you are talking about. I guess I could be more technical and precise with my language, but its pretty obvious when I say animation I am also referring to the visual presentation of the fight itself... which as you said yourself, is extremely hard to follow. If its extremely hard to follow, in my opinion, that makes it bad.

2023-11-22 15:49:31 +0000 UTCThat's not bad animation, that's bad direction; there's a major difference imo. The animators themselves did the best with what they were given, and I think the animation looked great despite the times where it was difficult to follow. Obviously I'm not excusing Mappa's production schedule when I say that. In fact I'm moreso blaming Mappa because everyone involved with the visuals of the anime was clearly stressed out of their fucking minds due to the horrific schedule. But yeah, there's a huge difference between "This animation is bad" and "This fight is extremely difficult to follow", and this fight was clearly more of the latter than the former.
Pye
2023-11-22 10:46:02 +0000 UTC@Bighead I feel like the last thing we should be doing in this situation is encouraging Mappa that this type of production schedule is okay and ends up making a good product. Like you said, so much of the fight in this episode is literally incomprehensible... I would say that makes it by definition "bad" animation.

2023-11-22 04:42:10 +0000 UTC@Chris I love otaku humor and I will probably have no issue with the things that didn't age well (if I am catching your drift). The first episode was really interesting, and I loved the art style. I've never seen Death Note or Code Geass so I can't compare it to those lol.
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2023-11-22 04:39:52 +0000 UTC@Jasmine Yeah I think you’ll like it quite a bit. Has a very intellectual premise and execution, quite like death note. I like it more because, unlike shows like Death Note and Code Geass imo, it has an extremely strong beating heart to it. The only problem I would say is some otaku humor and a couple things that didn’t age the best (but these are somewhat minor in the grand scheme of things and the former I think is partially written on purpose since the main characters are sort of social outcasts). Pretty easy 9/10 for me.

2023-11-22 04:15:20 +0000 UTCJust a little correction. They said only 30% of the "vision" was carried out. So it doesn't necessarily mean that only 30% of the animation was complete. And it is quite sad to see a lot of people calling the animation abysmal when to me it just seems like rushed, rough around the edges work. And yes there were moments where the fight was incomprehensible, but i personally think conflating this to bad animation is a bit of an overkill even if the animators themselves call it that because of the disappointment and high expectations they set for their work. I think it's average animation compared to what we expect of jjk but constantly pointing that out every episode seems a bit unnecessary given that the least we can do to support the animators is appreciate the work they have done with the pressure and abysmal working conditions they have been provided.
Bighead
2023-11-22 01:55:10 +0000 UTCLol what are these arguements. So because every anime would be better if they were given more production time (objectively true statement that nobody disagrees with) therefore an anime where the animators themselves are constantly complaining about the horrific working conditions deserves no criticism? I agree that most studios do the same thing that Mappa is currently doing to its employees, its a industry wide issue. I absolutely do not single out Mappa in this regard, I frequently critique and get upset at other studios for doing this exact same thing. There are actually studios out there that don't force there animators to work on tight schedules, forcing there to be imperfections. Kyoto Animation is a prime example of this. You will have a very hard time finding obvious imperfections and mistakes in the drawings of any of there productions, and in my opinion, plenty of there animes are "perfect". Because we know its completely possible for studios to not exploit there workers, we as the consumers absolutely should care when studios like Mappa treat there employees like absolute trash.
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2023-11-22 00:59:31 +0000 UTC“Ruining” The episode was a 10/10 to 99 percent of people. ALL animators work on tight schedules. ALL animes are imperfect and would be better if they had more time/money. Singling out Mappa when most studios do the same just shows you only care when it’s trendy to care
Seth
2023-11-21 21:56:14 +0000 UTCI guess the animators themselves are ungrateful brat's as well lol Why should I be grateful too MAPPA exploiting their own workers and ruining a great piece of art?

Seth
2023-11-21 19:07:12 +0000 UTCIn my opinion the animation in this episode is mostly pretty bad. Its clearly unfinished and extremely hard to follow what's going on. Not the animators fault of course, but yeah, most of the sequences in this episode clearly needed a lot more work and a lot of it comes out looking unprofessional. The people who made this episode themselves would call it bad, so.

2023-11-20 20:44:16 +0000 UTC@Seth Haha there’s always gotta be one dude upset at somebody else’s anime recommendation. I never said he has to react to every fantasy anime that pops up, I don’t think anyone believes he should do so. On the other hand, Goodwin has not reacted to a SINGLE Fantasy Anime, so it would be totally fair for him to open up to that genre through an extremely popular, critically acclaimed, ongoing fantasy anime. I’ve only seen about 100 different anime so far, which is not a lot compared to other fans of the medium, but I can personally say that Frieren is anything but generic slice of life. I’ve found it to be extremely niche and unique, but maybe you’ve watched every other fantasy anime out there and they are all similar to Frieren. I would rather him react to over a dozen different anime that I believe at this point to be better than Frieren, but most of them actually have plots that are less crazy than Frieren’s. I don’t understand your opinion that “crazy plot = better show/reactions”. For myself, the quality of the writing is significantly more important than the craziness of the plot. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of dogshit anime that aren’t worth anybody’s time that have significantly more “crazy” plots than Frieren. And he definitely shouldn’t watch any of them.
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2023-11-20 18:32:38 +0000 UTCThere’s plenty of better animes story wise that have been recommended for years. He doesn’t have to react to every fantasy anime that pops up, especially not a generic slice of life show. Wouldn’t you rather him react to a show with a crazy plot instead?
Seth
2023-11-20 18:25:45 +0000 UTCThe craziest thing is apparently this episode was only 30 percent complete but they had to release it anyway. Still, it angers me seeing people find ways to complain after watching a masterpiece. Some people are actually calling the animation “bad” which blows my mind
Seth
2023-11-20 18:23:32 +0000 UTC@neurofunky Based FMAB fans on there way to review bomb another highly rated anime. (It's still at number 2, might've already been bombed in the last couple hours lmao)
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2023-11-20 16:26:01 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed your JJK catchups lol Also really liked your views and discussion about the guilt that Yuji and possibly Megumi would have after this. Some people casually mock Megumi about summoning that strongest one to fight such weak villain and destroyed the city, but I can see that Megumi legit thought he was going to die so decided to use the final card which he thought would just kill two of them before the ritual ends never knowing that Sukuna will fight it instead and destroy the city. So, yes it was on Megumi too like you said even though he didn't mean it. I liked that you pointed out and now that I think the show has been playing around those theme (both Yuji and Megumi and even Yuta in the movie) since S1.
Yori
2023-11-20 15:32:55 +0000 UTCand the animation director who said that deleted their tweet and corrected themselves by saying it was 70% complete, not 30%. Which, I mean, just look at the episode. If this was 30%, 100% is literally unfathomable.
tk
2023-11-20 13:18:55 +0000 UTCOh wow Frieren took rank #1 on MAL, I wonder how long it can stay there before the review bombing begins
neurofunky
2023-11-20 11:56:07 +0000 UTCIt's not 30% complete. That's an exaggeration. You can't look at this and say it's 30% complete. They even said 30% of their vision. One person said that.
J
2023-11-20 09:47:02 +0000 UTCThey said it was only 30% complete. Imagine if the animators were given reasonable time to work on this season. They still did an amazing job with the situation they were in. Honestly I hope they delay the rest of the season even if it takes months so the animators can get the rest they deserve.
Rayn
2023-11-20 06:50:20 +0000 UTCI think the animators actually walking out was a rumor confirmed to be false by some animators. From what I can tell, they're trying to just tough it out and get the rest of the season done but based on the terrible situation there we can definitely expect to see dips in the animation quality. Wish they would just take some delays to let the animators take a break.

2023-11-20 05:35:19 +0000 UTCI think the point of the battle and action was chaos though and even though the whole vision wasn't realized, the chaos of these two beings that are so strong destroying everything I think was perfectly conveyed despite it being so hard to follow sometimes. That song was genuinely a gut punch. *Yuji having an emotional breakdown* "YOU ARE MY SPECIALLL"
Skyler Anderson
2023-11-20 05:31:46 +0000 UTCFans: Get rid of the ghosting! Narrator: 0.2 seconds. That is the limit the director thought they could handle. They would require 6 months of rehabilitation, but they would survive.

2023-11-20 04:23:01 +0000 UTCSome people say it was unnecessary for Megumi to use Mahoraga, which I disagree with… but what I do find unnecessary was the fact that he decided to reveal his technique beforehand. “I’ll just give it that extra boost just in case” like brother, he’s a ketchup stain anyways. Now I know why the ghosting is necessary, those damn kids wouldn’t have survived.

2023-11-20 04:14:16 +0000 UTCI didn't realize the my first watch but when mahoraga was trapped underwater it grew gills showing its adaptability.

2023-11-20 03:14:20 +0000 UTC@Sal Inger Agreed. The animation is truly stellar and the vibes are unmatched, its such a cozy watch while also being very emotional and intriguing. Two 10/10 anime's for sure.

2023-11-20 03:13:48 +0000 UTCGod the scoring of this episode was so phenomenal. The track that plays when Sukuna uses his Domain Expansion is gorgeously chilling, and the dark inversion of the ‘OP song play during epic climatic moment’ shounen trope was just such a perfectly haunting choice. Bless the animators and post-prod team 🙏

2023-11-20 02:59:31 +0000 UTCAbsolutely. I'm hoping to be able to post it by the weekend but still not 100% sure
Alex G
2023-11-20 02:58:38 +0000 UTCThe song was an instinctual gut punch even not knowing exactly what the meaning behind it was. Would have loved to have seen the full vision, but I guess the saving grace is that, at least for me, the hardest hitting moment is Yuji's regaining consciousness. And that worked well in relative stillness and silence. Though who knows what we missed out on
Alex G
2023-11-20 02:57:43 +0000 UTCUnrelated question but do you have it in your plans to watch the finale of AOT? I know you got a lot happening but just was wondering :)
Skyler Anderson
2023-11-20 02:57:31 +0000 UTCSomething to mention is that the opening song is written from the perspective of a cursed spirit so them playing it at the end of the episode is almost like Sukuna taunting Yuji in this emotional breakdown. It kinda feels out of place without understanding the song but knowing that at least gives that scene more pain imo. Best episode of the show imo and the animation director said this was only 30% of their vision and so much stuff was cut or unfinished because of the time contraints on the animators. They still somehow delivered this with 30% of the vision done.
Skyler Anderson
2023-11-20 02:53:13 +0000 UTCOh I can see that! I'm just so used to the Megumi meme that anytime I remember him getting serious, I assume it's Mahoraga, and I've seen a lot of people talk about him possibly wanting to do the same in the Todo fight. But now that you've mentioned it, it wouldn't really be in Megumi's character to whip out Mahoraga against a fellow student.
Bighead
2023-11-20 02:49:48 +0000 UTCOh it’s VERY bad. MAPPA is finally reaping what they sow.

2023-11-20 02:40:03 +0000 UTCOh no 😅 Megumi has really been itching to play this card I guess. Glad it wasn't Todo

Alex G
2023-11-20 02:35:38 +0000 UTCAnd just like that the JJK Goodwin binge is over… time to wait weekly again. Now watch Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End or we riot. Brand new anime this season, only eleven episodes out, will keep dropping weekly until episode 28, second highest rated anime of all time on MyAnimeList already, peak slice of life high fantasy story with action sprinkled in but not the focus, incredible storytelling, characters, themes, and production quality. I know there is no slot open for you and you’re super busy so this is just a hypothetical pitch, but I suspect potentially in a future poll maybe after Hunter x Hunter is over it could actually win.
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2023-11-20 02:19:27 +0000 UTCHe wasn’t gonna use it against todo. He doesn’t even change his stance or say the chant or anything. All he said is that he would start fighting back. Imo him deciding to kill himself and and another student for no real reason, before even considering fighting back makes megumi a much less interesting character
Virgil Hawkins
2023-11-20 02:11:52 +0000 UTCJust leaving this here...... https://www.reddit.com/r/JuJutsuKaisen/s/u0KBORJRHs Also now learning about Mahoraga, the number of times Megumi has tried to summon it in season one is hilarious. In ep1 when Sukuna was first ressurected, ep5 when he fought Sukuna, ep8 when he fought Todo lol, maybe even in the Hanami fight when he had the buds in him and Maki was captured and in ep23 when he almost does it before going berserker and instead unleashing his domain. He's just like, "alright time to suicide
Bighead
2023-11-20 02:08:53 +0000 UTCUnfortunately the anime is in an uncertain place after this. Cause this episode is actually unfinished. The production has been absolute hell for the animation team and they’re just walking out the door apparently. Apparently work on the rest of the episodes hasn’t even started or something like that…
