Aside from some of his short fiction like "A Nursery Tale" I guess only two books you could be referring to are Ada or L0lita? The differences are pretty stark to me. For one, they involve underage girls, where this is about consenting adults (whether you see it as BFE or as the University-student / older guy fantasy). Those books are also tragedies, and written as moral lessons (according to Nabokov and his wife Vera who helped with and championed Lolita). There's no moral lesson here. But you're right in another sense that there is the possibility of reading it with a sense of the taboo, and the reason I use that is I guess very similar to the reasons Nabokov used it (or why artists like Lana Del Rey use it). I'm nowhere near mastering it like they have - so I'm not comparing their genius to my own stumbling attempts, but it's a very sensual aesthetic because it toys with dynamics like younger/older big/small rough/soft. And also good/bad, love and lust. If you know the opening passage to L0lita, you know the aesthetic beauty of the description of saying her name, but also the darkness of Humbert attempting to justify his behaviour. And in Del Rey there's a simlar tension. Here's a quote I kept from a review of LDR: " the Lolita aesthetic acknowledges the universal human quality of wanting to appear good in the face of a dark interior; individuals conscious of their mortality who find themselves part of a society with high moral expectations β thatβs all of us, then β will forever be attracted to a picture of youth and the prospect of being very, very bad. Morally reprehensible actions are not condoned, but ubiquitous human desire is." I don;t know if I agree with this completely, but it was thought-provoking.
