In this Beg-a-Thon live show, "Ancient Rome and the False Histories Inspiring Musk & the MAGA World," with guest Dr. Sarah E. Bond, we discuss Sarah's new book, Strike: Labor, Unions, and Resistance in the Roman Empire, and how Elon Musk and everyone in his MAGA orbit appropriate the aesthetics of Rome while understanding almost nothing about the history they're seemingly so infatuated with.

Originally streamed on YouTube for a live audience on Wednesday, February 19. You can watch the full video here.

Dr. Bond is such a great guest! This was one of my favorite episodes yet.

Right wingers love to talk about the fall of the Empire, but never really about the fall of the Republic. Economic stratification accelerated by the profits of ongoing semi-privatized and increasingly mercenary warfare enabling the elite to overwhelm and corrupt the preexisting (albeit flawed) system of constitutional checks and balances really does seem like a relevant story for our modern age.

Thanks so much for this. The modern “tech corporate owned regions” replacing regional governmental structures and small d democratic processes is their amalgamation of (mostly misogynistic) sci-fi and AU pseudo history combined with the inherent biases of a Privileged set of dudes that chose to ignore any ethical & liberty considerations that are implicated by the ruling classes taking any & all power away from the rest of us.

Didn't catch the original livestream as I live in a sane timezone (GMT), but this was great, particularly in respect of Broicism. Shall add Strike to my reading list.

You all should check out Donna Zuckerberg’s book Not All Dead White Men: Classics and Misogyny in the Digital Age (2019).
