Question:

As a music fan, what’s the most excited you could be? What does it take? Does a new record or a new song do it? Is it seeing the artist live in concert? Is it a personal interaction? A new music video that’s killer or a collaboration with another artist? I want to know what’s going to *do* it for people in 2021, when nothing seems to matter. Do I have to get on tik tok? (Please say no). Much love 😘 M

I'm a new fan and literally listening to Three Futures for the first time as I type this, and I can def say it's new music that does it for me 🙌 even if it's old music I'm hearing for the first time..lol Signed album releases or signed posters are also pree up there🙌

Brittney L Greer

I thought Tik Tok was a total waste... until I actually joined it. Queer music Tik Tok is alive and well, and you could totally thrive there if you wanted to!!! As a fan, I love access to exclusive merch, songs, email updates, and performances.

Natalie Peterson

Seeing live performances is my number one thrill. New music is a close second. A well done video is third. Merch not so much. I buy t-shirts at performances, but it's mostly to be supportive.

Charles E. Grant

Definitely a new record. I loved your performance on NoonChorus!

Holly

New record, live music, exclusive merch!

Dave-o

Definitely the most exciting thing for me is getting a new record. If I am lucky enough to catch an artist early in their career then a brief chat and a signed record at the merch desk after a show is the ultimate, but for you those days are long gone. So new record.

Simon Palastanga

Going to a show is the most exciting thing. New albums are exciting. I'll watch music videos once or thrice. I'm not likely to watch it again after that. I like the video that you posted of Video Games. I'd like to see more of that on Patreon. Collabs are cool. It could open us up to new artists and introduce you to the other artist's fans.

New record and live music!!

Samantha Crawford

The feeling of knowing there is a new album in the works. The excitement of having it in your hands for the first time. Reading the lyrics. Listening to the songs in their chronological order. Entering a venue. Getting to the front row (hopefully without too many pushing and shoving). The second before the artist you admire so much enters the stage. The second in which the artist you admire so much is going on stage. The first note of the first song they play live. When they recognize you in the crowd and wave/wink at you. The moment they realize everyone in the crowd knows the lyrics to a song. Should I go on...? (And no Tik Tok needed!)

Yifat

I loved the live shows. Waiting a while to get the courage to walk up to you after the concert, and ask you to sign the album, and awkwardly tell you that I've seen you before on concert and that I really liked it. Just being able to say to you personally I really like your music feels like a privilege. That said, in these times, maybe small streams of concerts for patreons, for those of use that are not exhausted with the on-screen days already, might feel like a good alternative. Please don't do tiktok. :D

Anke

Live shows are the best, especially those in small venues, but I don't see that happening for a while yet. Some of the local bands I like are playing again, but I don't think it's safe. In lieu of shows, new music is great, and I've enjoyed the demos you've released here. I've enjoyed a few online shows, and I'm trying out the Bands in Town streaming service. Personal interaction is nice - at the merch table or whatever, but I don't think you need to feel forced into doing shit you don't want to do. Play your music. That's why we're here.

Wade Shaffer

I'm over 50, so I will not comment on Tik Tok :) What I have always enjoyed most are special concerts, with which I mean concerts that step outside the standard format of a concert, either because of song selection, or interaction with the audience or anything else. New releases are always exciting but nothing beats the live experience, which obviously is difficult to 'simulate' in Covid times

Aksel van Elteren

I really enjoy the live experience - say, in a small venue. I have seen you perform twice in such venues in Manchester. There is little to beat that. Of course, I get excited with new releases from artistes whose work I love. The promise of a new album from you is thrilling. And, yes, some kind of personal interaction is a privilege - although I fully appreciate that you must 'keep your distance' somewhat. I know nothing of Tik-Tok - and would prefer to keep it that way. Very best wishes.

John Douglas Lipton

I love live music. I love the front row. When I saw you in Seattle that is where I was. It was an Amazing show I really loved it. After the show you honored me by taking my hand as you left the stage. The only thing that would have made it more special would be if I did a selfie with you. That was an amazing night. Thank you for bringing the Dove and the Wolf that night. I had tickets to see you in Seattle again last year. I wonder what happened with that. I never got a refund for that. I hope you got something.

Steve Chibluesteve

I absolutely love the live shows and the meet and greets, but barring that, I've really enjoyed a lot of the live streams this past year. The show where you had the projector and the costume changes was pretty awesome. I saw other live streams where artists did a lot of chatting and responding to comments in live chat, and that felt really different from the usual show and that made it special. Of course if you start doing basement or club shows again, that'd top it all.

SHY NOT SHOW... Damned autocorrect

MLBCatcher12

Live Shows and New Music for me! I like when you interact with us but I know you’re show, so I appreciate even something just like this !! Thanks Mac ❤️

MLBCatcher12

Club shows, clubs shows, club shows, and an occasional festie. A new album builds to the live show excitement. Hearing THAT song. Meet n greet. Snagging a flyer or setlist, and having it signed. Myspace?

Tom Troelstrup

I am socially obligated to pressure you into getting on TikTok

heather

At this point in my life, it's live shows that do it the most for me. Even the streaming show you did several months ago on Noon Chorus was enjoyable. It made me happy (to see a favorite artist do something live) and sad (because I miss live shows) at the same time.

Chris Aycock

I get most excited about seeing an artist live. Your live streams last year were nice -- it's clear you put a lot of thought into them.

Nick DeCicco

I really love getting a peek at the process of creating a song/ putting together an album. Demos, initial drafts of lyrics, unused ideas for cover art, footage of studio work, etc.

Orla-Niamh Eisley

Oh god, please don't do tiktok... Live shows are (were?) definitely the most exciting, especially in a small/intimate venue. Nothing beats that personal connection, that small nod or laugh when your favorite musician sees you dancing, crying or singing along. <3 Your show in Amsterdam was the last one I saw before everything shut down, and I still think about it at least once a week tbh.

Vincent Berkien

Live shows always get me with chills, and personal interactions. Every time Garbage came to town I did a VIP package (and that’s how I discovered you). But I get so nervous during meet and greets I end up just listening lol. I also enjoy hearing snippets of new songs. I have been loving all the covers you have been doing lately! I have only been able to see you live twice now, so a live show would certainly be top of my list. Shame this pandemic has hurt so many musicians

April Guadiana

There's no substitute for actual live shows. I guess that doesn't really help right now but that's how it is.

Jason Squiers

I actually came across Torres via this "article" on Reverb (and it covers the BitCommandeR): https://reverb.com/news/torres-on-crafting-emotional-realms-with-pedals I'm an insufferable pedal nerd, so read that then checked out some tunes. Sold from there!

David Switzer

Most exciting are either whole big album projects I can sink my teeth into, or something personal from the artist - your demos and behind the scenes have been really cool. Maybe even like a private zoom/webchat just for patrons, so there's a limited number of people and you can play and also chat, would be pretty sweet.

Alex Knight

I think it's "all of the above" (new music, live music, interaction, etc) - and from what I've seen during the pandemic, you're doing a good job at all of that.

Russell Kolts

Songs and albums for me! :)

Hanna W

Some of it depends on the artist. New music from an artist I have been following and am interested in is always good. While I prefer albums over singles, I recognize albums take more time and effort, so I do not expect or even want artists I like churning out albums all of the time. Breaks are good, as is growth which takes time. I am also a fan of physical media be it vinyl, CDs, or less common formats (cassette, SACD... please no 8 tracks...) I do not snub digital though. I love your Live in Berlin album on bandcamp (though still low key hope for it on vinyl, at which point I will happily buy it a second time). Concerts are amazing too, but local live concerts are not really a thing for this year I think. I have viewed a couple online concerts this year which were good for the most part, but I am can see how they would be challenging to do. (I think these worked because one was Kid Koala, a turntablist who runs everything that is making sound directly to the mixer and from there to the stream; there are no mics and no concern about room acoustics. The other was Superorganism and that was more them being DJs for an online house party, so again, no mics or concerns about room acoustics). I do very much look forward to seeing you live whenever it is safe to do so. I saw your Vancouver show in in 2017, promoting Three Futures with Dove and the Wolf opening for you. That was such an amazing show I went to the Seattle show the following night. (I am about halfway between those cities, and briefly considered trying to go to the Portland show the night after that, but that would have been way too much driving...). Personally, I do not think Tik Tok is necessary, but also, I am old by Tik Tok standards.

judson

For me it's seeing a live performance. I think that's always been true, but I think especially after the year we've had, that kind of communal experience is what we all miss. Close second is listening to a new album from an artist you really like for the first time. And no you don't need to get a tik tok.

Alyson

The most exciting thing for me is not the videos or the social media or even the live performances (although it’s nice to see folks live). The magic is all in the music. Simple but it’s the hardest thing and the most elusive. How many musicians do we know that work their asses off on all the other stuff but burn out because not enough people connect to the actual work. Give me a great song that communicates the artist’s point of view. And that’s heavily contingent on me giving a rip about that artists point of you in the first place. The most exciting songs are the great ones: effortless and incandescent ones that are great to listen to and hooky. Sprinter and Good Scare in your catalog come to mind. Something zesty or minimalist or unusual in the post- production also doesn’t hurt. I also like interstitials like hip hop has a lot of. The spoken voice. 30 second bits and pieces of conversation, street noise, that kind of thing that make it into an album and inform what’s going on with the songs. And I’ll also qualify this to say I’m an older listener. Over 40. Kids today? Maybe they want something else.

Tex clark

for me it's a live show! I had tickets to see Torres in Cleveland before the pandemic hit us, and I'm looking forward to eventually getting to!

Erik

I have no idea how or what tiktok is good for, so please no lol I can’t do any more accounts and apps. For my well being 😅 I like supporting artists through Patreon and Kickstarter. I probably don’t even view 25% of posts (I’m shit at work-life balancing), but it feels good to know I’m supporting them. If that means there’s an album or merch I can buy, I’ll do it. Concerts and intimate shows from the before-fore times were awesome. I almost always bought VIP packages for the handful of shows I attended a year. Meet and greet were my favorites - I’m not even one to carry on any semblance of a conversation with my artistic idols... I just want to opportunity to soak in their energy for a short time ;)

Lavender Brooke

A live show is certainly best for me. That's probably a disappointing answer for you as it is the one thing you can't do right now. But you have already done the next best thing. Your Live in Berlin release captures the feel of a live show better than any other live recording I have heard recently. It's not spliced together from different shows and it doesn't seem to be edited at all. Just a rendition of what it must have been like to be there in front of you in Berlin. I love it. You mentioned personal interactions but you did not mention Cameo. Are you still on it? I treasure the personal connection I got with you when you did my cameo for me. I bet others would love it too. A new recording (whether a single song or a full album) certainly rate high up there in the excitement department for me too. Please don't get on Tik Tok. I have a lot of respect for you and don't want to see you doing that silly thing.

Tony Magliero

Hello, my fave is to see the artist playing live and possibly have a personal interaction with them: still remember your last great show in Brussels last March and the nice conversation with Jenna and you :-)

Massimo

New album/EPs are wonderful. Love listening to the best new releases each week. Live shows are what I live for. Nothing can beat that! 300 bands per year preCOVID. Although I’ve seen a ton of livestreams, I’ve been burning out on them sad to say. I’m hoping the recent political insanity is ending. COVID vaccines will bring back live music & we can all get back to a better life!

Bob Tomlinson

I saw Torres play live, saw that she had a BitComander from Earthquaker Devices and decided to try that out, ended up buying it on a NYC trip.

German G

For me, it’s a personal connection. But that connection can come in many different forms. Sometimes, it’s a live show in a small club where I can see the emotion in the singer’s face. Sometimes, it’s a live show in a huge venue where the energy of the band drives the crowd. Sometimes it’s a new song with a beat or a groove that hits me just right. Sometimes it’s a new song with a lyric that hits my heart. Sometimes it’s an old song that I hear in a new context. It’s never Tik Tok.

Ryan Goebel

New music, for me, especially an album. I still prefer to sit down and listen to an album from start to finish, rather than listen to songs released in isolation. Being there for a live performance is awesome, but even before COVID, I didn't get to many live shows because southern New Mexico isn't a popular stop on most folks' tour schedules. Collaborations are pretty cool - I was psyched when I found out who you were working with on Sprinter, being a fan of PJ Harvey and Portishead. I love cover versions too, like the cover of Wandering Star you posted here, I'm always interested in hearing an artist's interpretation of a favorite song.

Neal

Definitely new album/music. Then getting to see that record played live. When the venue is small and the time is right I like to try to make contact with artist. I think that when I buy the record, I am buying a look into to the artist soul that they want to share in that moment. So when I get to see and meet an artist before a show I like to give them a bottle of wine, mezcal, tequila, or good chocolate for that matter, with no strings attached in mind. Its a gift back and a way to say thank you for putting a record out and well its cool to see up close the hands that play an awesome guitar or stomp on a pedal. It usually ends with the Artist asking me what song do I wanna hear or a handshake. Regarding Tik Tok, I don't care much for it, but it could be a cool new way of introducing singles! You don't have to be in it, maybe get someone to dance in an arty way to a few seconds of the new single.

Ok I do have a new album coming out this summer. Obviously this is a secret 🤫

Mackenzie Ruth Scott

It's either a new album or seeing them in concert. Concerts probably would win in 2021, if they could be held safely. We've been holding onto front row tickets to your upcoming show in Connecticut through two date changes, and are still excited. But that said, every time I put on "Good Grief" I fall back down the Torres habit hole and start over with your debut (on vinyl). So...yeah...concerts as soon as we safely can. But for now, mind-blowing new songs help get us through. (And yeah, skip Til Tok.)

Gorman Bechard

Going to shows is my favorite thing to do with my time.

Josh Stewart

Omg new album please🥺🥺🥺 I finally collected all four of them so far this past Christmas! Oh, and more merch please 🥺

Lisbon Mohler

I love the anticipation of a new album. Especially if there are songs released leading up to the full album release. I also get excited for limited vinyl releases or other merch. Honestly, the best part of 2020 was the music 🖤

Hannah Marrs

If it's an artist I already know and love, definitely a live show + personal interactions are most exciting! A new song and record are a close second (but first if I don't already *know* the artist's discography inside out lol). Definitely not TikTok...

Daniya

New album or song.

Toni Salazar Loftin

I love new music so I love a song or an album. I’m still a fan of albums, even short ones that play together well. My favorite would be live shows, but we are still a ways from doing that in person. I loved your remote-live shows this last year, they helped in this time of social distance. And no on the Tik Tok 🤣

Sam Patterson

New music, seeing the artist live is fantastic. Your notes/updates on patreon are fun. And everyone will have a different answer.. except Tik Tok, that's not an answer. Please God no. Some gear info is always fun (gotta assume I'm not the only other gear nerd on here).

David Switzer

A new record/song or a concert will get me excited, but I'm trying to think of the MOST excited I could POSSIBLY be. Maybe a concert where someone plays favorite songs of mine that they normally don't play, or otherwise does something special or unique that makes me feel like it was more than "just" a concert. A really cool cover of a song I love will do it, or I guess anything like that that makes me feel like my personal taste is being rewarded in some way?

Hal Phillips

For me, probably seeing an artist perform, but not like at a big arena or something. So far the most important shows I've been to are the ones where I can go up to the edge of the stage, and really see them perform. Like the absolute best music experience I've had was in a venue with maybe ~30 other people and the musicians. It was magical.

Diskostix

Knowing that a song is coming is the biggest thing for me, as a listener. Getting snippets that might not even end up in the final cut spark my brain in anticipation of what the full song might sound like and keep me extra hyped for a release date.

Casey Vandeventer

I have to think about my answer, but it's definitely not Tik Tok!

Hal Phillips
