The Sopranos - S1/E5

This was a groundbreaking episode at the time. Not just for this series, but for television in general. It was controversial because this was the first time a main character committed such a violent act. Since Tony is our main character the studio was worried that if Tony murdered someone the audience would hate the character. Especially for how it was shot. Up close and the long strangulation. It may not seem like it now but characters didn't exist like that yet for a main character. It was crazy to see back then.

The 5th episode is the first of many stand-alone episodes in the series that are not tied to the plot at all but I enjoyed just as much as storytelling episodes
