I watched this show well after it was popular, but a long time ago at this point lol. Don't remember much of it, so this is nice to revisit! I feel like I mentioned The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr before, but it's similar to Firefly. The shows themselves are very different, but both are sci-fi westerns. Plus, Bruce Campbell! Haven't watched that in a long time either.

2026-02-11 19:30:04 +0000 UTCThey’re speaking Chinese. There won’t be subtitles for it—they use it as a way to allow the characters to swear while bypassing censors. It’s not addressed directly, so I’ll share that the idea is that China and English-speaking countries became pretty much United as the main influences when Earth started interplanetary travel, so Chinese language and cultural influence bleeds into some of the sets/costumes and language interjections. If I recall, the spoken Chinese doesn’t hold up as accurate according to Chinese speakers, but you can take it to pretty much mean the character is swearing.

It has mystery/horror elements, wonderful character development over time, interesting politics, stunning cinematic visuals, and is known as one of the most scientifically realistic space shows ever made. Another bonus is that it’s based on a novel series, AND the two authors of the novel were involved in the screenwriting and production of the show. Oh, and great acting too! It’s among the very best sci-fi ever made, and deserves far more attention than it has gotten.
