I think it really depends on your partner. Like if the boyfriend were someone who never hung out with girls and he all of a sudden wanted to go on a 2-2 trip then I would feel uncomfortable about it. But this guy and the gf both said they have friends of the opposite sex so I don’t think it’s weird. I think the only reason she started feeling weird about it was other people talking who don’t understand their specific dynamic combined with the fact she didn’t know those girls. I personally wouldn’t go on a trip with people I haven’t known for that long, and if I’m really close to them then my partner would already know all about them. But I don’t think the bf did anything wrong.
