The Baumann family is full of problem solvers, haha.
“The three of you scampered inside and the door got slammed shut behind you. Tamarack and Mrs. Baumann both shoved it closed. Water was not a welcomed guest.”
mrs_b “My, my, looks like we made it in one piece.”
“You hadn’t finished [brushing/shaking] off the droplets that caught you along the way before Tamarack piped in with a request.” #if polite/rowdy
tam “Omi, can I have your phone? I need it.”
mrs_b “I need it.”
“What Tamarack was asking was absurd, it was out of nowhere, it was unfair. Mrs. Baumann was completely at a loss.”
if hanging out:
tam “But Omiii, you told us to talk to people. We’ve gotta use the phone!”
mrs_m “For Pete’s sake, I meant each other.”
if staying:
tam “But Omi, it’s important! We’ve gotta use it. It’s for [first_name].”
“Tamarack met [Granny]’s whine with pleading.”
mrs_b “For Pete’s sake…”
#####
if attended tea party:
“She couldn’t help mumbling under her breath.”
mrs_b “I ought to be grateful you’re at least asking this time.”
#####
“[Granny] pressed fingertips along her wrinkled forehead, moving them down the sides of her face. How stressful this was for her.”
mrs_b “Wait a moment. I’ll take care of this.”
“For some reason, Mrs. Baumann shuffled into the cramped aisle. Was her cell in a different place? Was there a house phone Tamarack could use instead?”
“You didn’t get an answer to those questions. Her plan was entirely different from what you’d imagined.”
“Without [hesitation/fear], [Granny] just started banging on the [mysterious/frightening] office door.” #if not nervous about that or is
mrs_b “Open up, Ernst!”
“He did, quickly. Mr. Baumann didn’t step outside of his secret room, but the door swung to the side. Mrs. Baumann talked directly into the void ahead of her. It kinda looked like she was chatting to a ghost.”
“Her voice was loud [enough for the dead to hear, and for you to listen in at the other end of the hall/enough that you were able to listen in from the other end of the hall].” #if teasing/jokey MC or not
mrs_b “Your granddaughter needs to borrow a phone, and lord knows you won’t be using that to have any friendly chats. I wish.”
mrs_b “And if it’s about work, you don’t need to hear it. Take the afternoon off for once, you retiree.”
“Mr. Baumann either said nothing or the few words he offered were quiet. His actions always spoke louder than he did.”
“A pale hand reached into the hall and placed a phone into Mrs. Baumann’s waiting palm.”
mrs_b “Thank you!”
