On Measurement Units

Hello friends!

During the course of writing and creating scenes, I have intentionally avoided creating scenarios where characters share information like height or size. The reason for this, is that I believe it would be a nuisance, or too much of a 4th wall break, too include imperial units when a large number of you use metric!

That said, I have a plot point in mind where it simply makes sense to use numbers. Before I get to that point, I wanted to ask: How do you feel about them?

Comments

Yeah, it's been easy to avoid them because everything is so visual, but I've written a couple scenes where it just makes sense to have the number. Like, "Woah, could you imagine what life would be like at X feet tall?!" I do like the alternate render idea

We're all over the place! I measure height in feet, rooms in sqft, but I buy things in litres and measure travel in KMs!

Alternatively, if you're worried about the fourth wall breaks, you could always use both measurements and release them as different versions. Like the Freedumb Measurement version vs. the Common Sense Measurement version. Not saying it's ideal, but it's an option, especially if you make a story that goes heavy with the measurements, like one where there is a weekly checkup at the doctor's office or something. Personally I don't find them as important when it's in a visual medium, the descriptions are only needed if I don't have a visual comparison, but I know some people love to have measurements to track it all.
