Most americans don't know Robert Clary-who played Labeu in 'hogans heros, 'was a french jew who survived Auschwitz.he was young and had a good singing voice so the guards would have him sing while they dined, it kept him alive. in that same show Klemperer, Askin and Banner were all gwermans who fled the nazi's and lived on beyond them. but still do not be so sure of the anger in you. German-Americans have done great things. men with names like Eisenhower, emulate them

I have just watched Spartacus WAH ep on the last days of Auschwitz. Truly breathtaking yet again. The holocaust is a topic which by it's very magnitude makes it virtually impossible to reach the level of sorrow, reverence and understanding of the true scale of the crimes committed. Yet this team have, better than any other documentary I've known managed to by combining bald fact numbers, recalling the human story's of some of the victims (allowing them to stand testament for their brother millions), describing both mass and solitary crimes while recognising that at least some of the people who perpetrated these deeds were not ever so different as the rest of the human race at the beginning of the war. They all had families, lives, jobs, loves and dislikes. It is in many ways this sameness which is the most frightening aspect of the whole holocaust, for without these people many of whom in other times would have been ordinary people the holocaust would not have happened. This is why this series is so important as it reminds us of the thin veneer on humanity which if pushed in a certain way all this could happen again. Never forget!

Sparty: I live in Los Angeles. I used to take guitar lessons in the Melrose district. Near where I always parked, there was an old Jewish lady I got to know named Merel. She would tell me how her whole family got wiped out in the camps. You read about the six million killed, it's a statistic. Then you meet someone who was actually there, and her whole family died, and then it's real. And she talked about it so matter-of-factly. Like having your whole family murdered was just something that happens every day to everyone, right? Once, in the Fairfax area I was behind a lady who had a serial number tattooed on her arm. Again, something I'd read about, but hadn't seen. And your War Again Humanity series, every episode is like a hammer, bludgeoning you with a weekly reminder of how real it was, not just a number. How cruel and monstrous the Germans were. My ancestry is German and Greek. I never knew the Greek side of the family, so if someone asked me about my ancestors, I always said German. I'd thought, from time to time, about ditching my biological father's last name and changing it to the German name from my mother's side of the family. Not any more. A few weeks ago someone asked me about my ancestry, I said Greek and left it at that.
