Wind

The first thing I feel is the wind. Although I come from the water, I am now a creature of the air. The wind on my skin is my joy. The breath in my lungs is my medicine…

>> NOW YOU WRITE… what is your relationship with the elements? Do you have a favorite most loved or engaged with element? When you step outside into nature, which element to connect with first…or rather which element reaches out to touch you first?

Earth reaches out to me calling me outside like a Siren of enchanting adventure. I feel mother earth inviting me to move and explore her majestic beauty daily. And I reciprocate by dancing with her in the forests on the lakes and over the mountains. Each ascent brings challenges that are rewarded with speed and exhilaration on the downhill runs, or over and through the rapids! Mountain life is remote and often isolated. The stillness is her way of allowing us to sense the others creatures we share her with. Her storms quench our thirst. Her vegetation nurishes our bodies. She is begging for respect from all of us. I am one of many listening to her siren song. She makes my soul sing. She is my friend. I cherish her with loving kindness. She, in turn, has taught me to cherish myself with loving kindness too!

After writing my first response above as a tongue in cheek analysis, not an observation of a moment and how I react. The next day I actually paid attention as I stepped through the door, coffee in hand, ready to taste it once I settled down: It’s the air I notice first, the cool air in my lungs, the sky above, the fresh air all around me. Then I feel the earth as I step bare feet on the ground and sit down to connect with her. I sense an energy emanating from her. Then I notice the water as a vehicle of flavor and a source of relief and sustenance, it also carries the aroma in this cup of blended of coffees from all around the world. Finally I thank the fire for the warmth of the coffee and its participation in the extraction of those flavors in the cup. But I think it's the earth I feel attached to because it is the source of every thing I use as an architect to build, and that is my passion in this life.

An intriguing question, it must be air because without it I’m not moving out the door, I need the oxygen to make me move, but then the door came from the earth and my feet are on the floor, and when I step onto the porch I feel it’s connection to the earth. That sends a current through my feet that I feel as energy just like the air I breathe. And the fuel to make me move came from the earth as plants, fed by water from the sky which evaporated over the sea to fall near me and feed the plants. So I couldn’t move without water either, in fact I’m mostly water. Where’s the fire? Is it the earth’s core, is it the sun’s light and warmth that keeps us all alive, is it the fire in my body that wants to express itself as me? Or is it the burning fossil fuel on the stove that heats the water, to boil the water, and roast the coffee beans, and steep them into a liquid that when consumed gives me the idea that I should step outside? Oh my, the morning breaks the silence that was sleep when I was unaware of the complexity my thoughts would bring. I think I’ll make some coffee then write and read the morning pages. ;-)
