More Secret Awful Hospital sketches (spoilers?) - and input needed!

What's REALLY trapped in the garbage in Fern's hospital room? A whole other nurse! BUT WHY!?! We'll find out sooner or later.

Meanwhile, some doodles of another Hospital patient. Specifically, the guy from the Dr. Phage creepypasta, who you might recall is a big giant asshole.

Including this dude in the series is something I've flip-flopped on since it began. I always figured if he showed up, he'd be part of the surgical ward story arc, but we're right on the cusp of that and I'm no closer to deciding if I really want him in the story at all!

You can probably guess well enough from his original story role that he will not be a great guy.

So would the inclusion of another grey-zone patient have a good or bad impact on the series? Is it high time Fern meets another character in basically her own position, from her own world, whether or not they're a big giant asshole? Or would it feel cheap and predictable?

This will be the first full-blown new Hospital ward Fern explores, and I basically thought maybe every ward should have a grey-zone patient mucking around. I don't know, there's things I do and don't like about the idea!

So far, anyway, I haven't felt any kind of clutter. Corpse World was probably the most active characters we've had at one time, and I think that was fine.

I agree with Mog down there, the contrast between Fern, a person out to save someone, and this douche, a guy out to save himself, would be pretty fun.

Siad

Not really, I mean, people really seem to adore all of the new characters we encounter.

Siad

One thing I'm growing concerned about it having too many active characters and elements at once....but I dunno, does it feel that cluttered?

I like the idea of bringing him in, especially if he's a huge jerk. I don't know if every ward should have a gray-zoner, but I think a few would make things interesting.

i think fern should be the only human. also i think i will like this nurse more than molly.

I don't mind either way, but lean in favor of the idea - if only because the existence of another human in her predicament, even an asshole she doesn't bother with for long, could really add a grain of hope for Fern herself (or reassurance that despite some damage she's caused out of desperation or by accident, she's not been actively shitty to people around her). If anything, with all the incomprehensible craziness she's had to endure, the dealing with an Incredibly Unpleasant Man is at least one normal thing she's inevitably dealt with back home before any of this began. Fern's had to wing this entire adventure scared and confused and with strange voices in her head, but this guy would, if nothing else, be Familiar Territory. Unpleasant, but Familiar. Heck, he'd be one of the few characters that could qualify as a Bad Person, because most of the entities Fern's met so far are often too alien to be considered deliberately malicious. They simply operate in a completely different way than we do. This guy however would know how he should be behaving, but still doesn't, because even by human logic he's an asshole. Plus it might make for an interesting contrast if all he thinks about is escape, while Fern is pretty dead set on finding her baby first/has no plans to leave this place until she does. Not that she's found any leads on /how/ to leave the hospital really, but I'm guessing even if an opportunity to leave popped up, she wouldn't take it if it meant leaving her son behind.

You kind of have to include SOME kind of closure to that story, though, now that you've acknowledged in the comic

I think it would be fun if we met the guy and he was a foil to her, but don't restrain yourself from killing him horribly, either.

Siad

Considering how unrelentingly alien the comic is (even though that's part of why it's great), the idea of coming into contact with someone from home sounds kinda refreshing.

Doctor Starky

I think it'd be overall better if she never meets him, or at least doesn't for a long time, after finding more clues/traces. Maybe stuff that hints he either died or actually got home, if you can do it in a way that the information is useful or enlightening even if it leaves his fate ambiguous.

He is a generic gruff thin adult man, yeah, though that's partly because I imagine him working out as a parody of video game protagonists. He's like every player character in Silent Hill and half the Resident Evils....except the monsters in this place are better people than he is. Mainly he's a big douche and he'd be trapped in the Hospital for good reason. But yeah, it might still be too cliche? And some people might end up actually liking him when I'd want him to be almost totally unlikable.

I dont like that idea, I dont think the series needs a guy like him at all....especially not a gruff thin adult man. i like fern being the only grey-zone rep. its completely up to you though!!

I actually really like the idea of running into other Grey Zoners in the various parts of the Hospital, even if they're giant assholes. Personally, I'm hoping to find at least one that's not so bad!
