Lately, I’ve had two things on my mind.

The first is drawing characters’ faces. From what I’ve observed, one of the key factors in making a character’s face look stable is the horizontal size difference between the two eyes. As the face turns, the difference in size between the two eyes should increase. The extent of this difference seems to define each artist’s style. Some make the size difference quite dramatic, while others reduce it so much that it almost looks like the eye is breaking through the face. Also, once the size of the eyes, the distance between them, and their vertical positioning on the face are determined, the width of the face is also set. How this facial width is handled contributes to an artist’s unique style. Personally, when I draw in a standard, mainstream style, it feels a bit dull, so I tend to exaggerate things slightly.

The second is rendering. I find that simple rendering looks better than hyper-realistic rendering, so lately, I’ve been trying to ease up on my coloring. Still, I think the fundamentals of painting remain the same. First, I block in large areas and establish the form. Then, I smudge where necessary to soften transitions. Next, I use a smaller brush to refine details, blending again where needed. Then, I move to an even smaller brush… It’s a process that starts at a large scale and gradually narrows down. I believe the difference between realistic rendering and simplified rendering is that the latter stops before reaching the finest details, simplifying or omitting certain elements. But to maintain the same level of density as realistic rendering, it’s important to incorporate various elements within the composition to enhance the overall richness of the image.
