While there’s a unique charm in feeling the weight of realism, I’ve been more drawn to flat expressions lately, as I’ve developed a longing for anime-style characters. In this drawing, I’ve left all the dimensionality to the pen lines. By using the shape formed by the pen strokes and varying line thickness, I tried to “suggest” three-dimensionality. For coloring, I only applied simple rendering to create an anime-like look. However, with lighter coloring, the artwork tends to look empty. To address this, I believe I could 1) use deeper rendering for key areas, 2) add elements within the artwork, or 3) increase line thickness to enhance contrast. In this drawing, I’ve separated the color layers to help you see how the simple rendering works. I hope this is helpful:)
