Howdy Ionians,
One ruleset that has been commonly requested is our Respite System, which allows players to regain some of their resources while adventuring. The benefits of this system allow your party to adventure longer without requiring a Short or Long Rest.
Here's how it works:
After a particularly harrowing combat, you can issue respite to your players.
Everyone immediately takes a Short Rest, without in-game time elapsing, and all player characters gain Respite Points equal to their Proficiency Bonus. This can be done in any order.
A Respite Point can do one of the following:
Regain a Hit Dice
Restore 1 Use of a Long Rest ability
Regain a Leveled X Spell Slot where X equals the number of Respite Points expended.
Respite Points that are not spent are gone and cannot be retained.
To enhance the Respite System further, you can include feats or item features that improve the respite's efficiency.
Some examples include
Spell Meditation: When expending a respite point to regain a spell slot, the respite point is worth double it's value. This means you can expend 1 respite point to regain a 2nd Level Spell Slot, or 2 1st Level Spell Slots.
Efficient Respite: Hit Dice expended during a Short Rest Respite are rolled at maximum value.
Bountiful Health: Whenever you expend a respite point on anything other than regaining a hit dice, you also regain a hit dice.
This system will allow GMs to throw harder encounters without fear of players lacking resources to complete long adventures!
