Today we’re going to go over about learning new items to craft. This is being used in IO as a reward of sorts for defeating powerful enemies, and will also be shown off in our next book - Fiendish Forge.

Recipes are rewards for defeating powerful foes (normally within Boss Battles). Mid-Boss battles currently in IO will reward with treasure and materials that can be used for crafting (or simply used for wealth accumulation).
Since bosses normally have multiple mechanics - this also allows the GM to create items based off of those mechanics - thing of it as a memento of the fight - and a way for players who may have endured powerful abilities - now a way for them to use those abilities as well.
You can also use this system to attach your favorite magic item from 1st Party or 3rd Party 5e systems.
As for creatures that already exist within 5e, here are a few recipe ideas you can include within your game.
Weapon (Pike), Very Rare. Attunement Required.
While wielding and attuned to this weapon, you gain access to the following properties.
Weapon, +2. You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
Deadly Poison (Special - 3/Long Rest). Whenever you deal damage with a melee weapon attack made with this weapon, you can choose to expend this property. If you do so, the target must make a Constitution Saving Throw (DC 17).
On Failure: The target takes 42 (12d6) points of poison damage.
On Success: The target takes half as much damage.
Potential Materials: Purple Worm Parts, Alchemicals, Bone
Market Value: 44,000 gp.
Weapon (Whip), Rare. Attunement Required.
While wielding and attuned to this weapon, you gain access to the following properties.
Weapon, +1. You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
Adhesive. (Special - At Will). Whenever you deal damage with a melee weapon attack made with this weapon, you can choose to activate this property. If you do, the target must make a Strength or Dexterity Saving Throw (DC 15).
On Failure: The target is grappled by you. While grappled in this way, you cannot make attacks with this weapon unless you end the grappled effect during your turn as an item interaction.
Potential Materials: Mimic Parts, Alchemicals
Market Value: 4,400 gp.
Wondrous Item (Head), Very Rare. Attunement Required.
While wearing and attuned to this item, you gain access to the following properties.
Darkvision (60 ft.). You have Darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. If you already have darkvision, it increases by an additional 60 feet.
Water Breathing. You can breathe water.
Telepathic Bond (Action - 1/Day). You cast the spell, Telepathic Bond. Unlike the original, this spell lasts 24 hours.
Potential Materials: Aboleth Parts, Gemstones, Leather
Market Value: 20,800 gp.
