Foraging & Hunting β’ Brainstorming
Added 2024-09-23 15:26:09 +0000 UTCSorry, this was supposed to post yesterday but I had the wrong date selected under auto post π
I'm going to open this up for a general discussion about what you'd like to see added/changed from the current foraging mod, and what you'd like to see in a hunting mod.
I think the only real limitations I have for this right now are:
Foraging should be lot-based, meaning you're only able to forage on the lot your sim is currently on. I can add on an option to make this work like a rabbit-hole if there's a demand for it.
I'm thinking Hunting should work like a rabbit-hole where your sim disappears for a while then comes back with loot. But tell me what you guys think, if you have another idea let me know.
So let the ideas flow! All ideas are welcome and I'll do my best to try to fit in as many as I can!

I don't know if this fits into this discussion, but would there be a possibility to have more crafting recipes for the woodworking table? Littlemsssam has a mod, but I'd prefer your recipes that use the 'ingredients' from foraging (for wood) etc. I think you could make this your own thing :-) Anyway, thanks a lot for all your great mods!

2024-11-17 15:19:01 +0000 UTCSo I do liqe your idea about the rabbit hole for hunting; i had an idea though but i'm not sure how hard it would be, and EA doent give us many wild animals that at least Westerners would feel comfortable hunting. But of what there is (rabbits, foxes, i guess?) they could hunt the animal using a tool liqe a bow&arrow, shotgun/rifle, knife, or spear or something. but then maybe that is too graphic for some people probably. I thinq if there was a way that sims could forage in community bushes that would be great but I understand that may be too difficult. I've often looqed at the luschious plantlife right around my sim's home and wished they could go dig in them to maqe use of it because surely they could find something, and I have always felt the same way about the vacation destinations liqe Selvadora and Granite Falls. But from what I know of modding and yiur style in the game I thinq yiur ideas are good. I know what I said may be technically possible or maybe not, but even if it is it is probably super difficult. Reading the other responses I thinq Kiya's idea for different loot for different seasons sounds great, but I suppose would only be compatible for players who have Seasons. And dying and tanning to make leather sounds awesome. And what EruditeIdiot said reminded me that an idea I'd liqe to see is a new flour and grain that is just "wild grains" and "wild grain flour". Lots of common grasses that grow all over the world are technically edible and produce grains, they are just not domesticated for various reasons (such as taste or difficulty). So it would be cool if when foraging the sims could have a chance of finding some of these wild undomesticated grains. Bark, Leather, Fur, (idk why im capitalizing them), Horns & antlers, Teeth, Claws, needles from plants with spikes, and pollen all have applications in crafting useful items. It would require new useful items to use them with though, i thinq. But some ideas of what could be foraged in addition to bugs and grass and random seeds. Broken glass can be foraged too, or sand to be made into glass. I also liqe Moozilla's idea of different loot for day and night. I also love all of Rebecca Carlos' ideas. I was gonna list some animal game I thinq would be cool for them to hunt or return with. In addition to venison, bear, squirrel, and quail, perhaps raccoon, skunk (with a chance they are sprayed liqe cats and dogs can get upon returning with skunk, or a random chance that happened any time they go hunting at night), bird liqe duck, geese, turkey; bison, coyote, fox, rabbit, goat, beaver, moles, bighorn sheep, antelope, oxen, muskox, moose, armadillo, porcupine, badger, groundhog, weasle, possums, muskrat, rat, vole, grouse, alligator, lizard, snake, and maybe things liqe seals and sealions and waterbirds for neighborhoods with a lot of coastline. Sorry this is so long, I'm just really excited

2024-09-24 19:07:17 +0000 UTCNot sure yet! I like some of these ideas, AND it triggered another idea where I might be able to incorporate this into another mod. Let me think on this for a little π€

2024-09-24 18:24:05 +0000 UTCWater...why didn't I think of water?! I like that - gonna save that one for later π

2024-09-24 18:21:38 +0000 UTCOooh, I hadn't considered time of day! That's definitely getting added to the list. Seasonality is one I was already pondering, I just have to find a way to make it work for people who don't have seasons.

2024-09-24 18:20:53 +0000 UTCYes, I realize we probably need a few more options, but it may need to be something I add in a future update depending on how intricate this mod turns out to be, because you know...I don't know how to do anything simple π

2024-09-24 18:19:14 +0000 UTCI'm definitely adding new types of meat! I don't know about bringing back the whole animal - that would be a much larger mod and I want to try to keep this one pretty simple for now. Let me see if I can find an in-between for this idea. You have a lot of great ideas here - I'm going to see if I can incorporate some of them. Traps is another great idea, I'm definitely going to try to incorporate them!

2024-09-24 18:18:39 +0000 UTCI will make sure I consider the rate at which you get certain things, and where you get them from moving forward. The wool is a really great idea!

2024-09-24 18:15:49 +0000 UTCYes, seasonal game was something I was already considering, but I'll have to find a creative way to make it work for people who don't have seasons (I learned the hard way that I need to consider this after creating my most recent Lot Traits π ). Your idea for weapons just made an idea pop in my head - let me stew on this and see what I can come up with. Dying and Tanning would be GREAT to do together, but I'm not that good with clothing so I'll have to toy around with those ideas.

2024-09-24 18:14:13 +0000 UTCI really like the trapping idea! Let me think on a way I could do this and how I can make it work. I'll likely do a poll soon to see what people prefer and get some more input on this! π

2024-09-24 18:10:50 +0000 UTCI'm not sure what they've done, but these would be new resources so they shouldn't conflict.

2024-09-24 02:47:05 +0000 UTCThe hunting 'rabbit hole' idea is a great idea (adding a percentage to come back with meat in the loot would be fantastic). I think your mod is spectacular and so involved! I love it.

2024-09-23 22:48:46 +0000 UTCI love this idea. I love playing survival and only using what I harvest or forage but other than selling chickens there isn't a lot of ways to get meat. There are some great ideas above for sure. However you make it I'm sure will be awesome. Thank you for all the great content.

2024-09-23 22:47:38 +0000 UTCOh man, do I have opinions on this. So, there are already mods like ye olde cookbook which come with rabbithole hunting. For that reason, I vote to do something else. I remember back in the day Frac and Moon made some incredible hunting and trapping content for the Sims 2 (https://www.medievalsims.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=240&t=7277). I'd love to see something like that but for the Sims 4. For the Sims 4, JaneSimsten has already done some interesting hunting stuff with her Marksmanship mod, as well, that might be useful to look at as an example/inspiration for what non-rabbithole hunting could look like. (But again I think trapping would probably be easier, since it would be more about creating an trap mesh and then having an animal spawn in the trap every so often.)

2024-09-23 19:50:58 +0000 UTCA rabbit hole would probably be best for the hunting. It would be cool if you got different game during different seasons. Getting different game in different towns would be neat too. Crafting weapons on the wood working table in order to hunt with. Crafting decorations, even clothes from the items you gather. Some one mentioned dying and tanning that would be awsome. awsome. I'm going to need a better computer to keep up with your mods. π

2024-09-23 16:16:57 +0000 UTCWhen Iβm playing survival mode (trying not to use money at all if I can) I wish that things like wheat, sugar cane, tomato, and onion were much easier to find when foraging. Certain plants are a must have for any low level/off the grid recipes, and for the Brazen recipes too. I love getting berries and mushrooms too, but I would use foraging more if those critical plants were more common, or if I knew placing a certain bush/grass would boost the chances of tomatoes. As for hunting, I love it! Can we gather wool for knitting as part of the haul? That or, (getting crazy here) what about a mechanic to get some kind of βpelt,β but then use that to make wool for knitting or other crafting ingredients? I LOVE all your fun mods! Thanks for all the hard work!

2024-09-23 16:14:50 +0000 UTCOh, and more foragable trees/bushes/rocks would be amazing for different landscaping options β€οΈ

2024-09-23 16:04:32 +0000 UTCNew types of meat from the rabbit hole like venison or bear would be cool! Would love if they brought back the whole animal (small game while skill is low, then transition to large game?), and had to break it down either as an interaction in the kitchen or a seperate table object. Maybe drying and tanning the leather? Could be part of hunting or it's own skill? Make rugs, clothes out of the furs. Render tallow for candles/cooking. On the lot, maybe traps you can craft and place on trees/bushes/rocks/ponds to catch small game like squirrel and quail? Crafting bows and arrows on woodwork table using feathers from catches/wood from from forage? So many ideas, I just want to say I adore your mods and i am happy to support you on Patreon π₯°

2024-09-23 16:02:36 +0000 UTCI agree the rabbit hole interaction seems like it would work best for hunting. If possible, I think it would add interesting gameplay and add to immersion if both time of day and season affected your loot haul :)
Moozilla
2024-09-23 15:44:37 +0000 UTCPelts, meat could be used in place of chicken/beef. If you're going native American, they used everything from the hunt. I'd be happy with a rabbit hole bc only the men would go out hunting. This, of course, wouldn't be limited to men. Bring back berries, flowers, tubers, roots, meat, perhaps water if they have a pail or water bladder.

2024-09-23 15:43:03 +0000 UTCWhat sort of materials would you get with hunting? Bones, skulls, skins, etc that we could use as decorations or even collectibles would be really cool.
