Grrl Power - Dabbler’s Science Corner #5

Thank you for the support! You guys are awesome!

Yeah! Double portmanteau! Ouroboros + Organism + Orgasm =  Ourobororganasm! Alert the... uh, people in charge of writing awards. Pulitzer! That's the guy. Or the Nebula. Yeah. Alert Thaddeus Q. Nebula, which is is a fictional person I assume the Nebula award is named after, because of his resemblance to a gaseous stellar body hundreds of light years across.

If you wore an Ourobororganasm as a cock sheath while having sex, it would count as a very weirdly intimate threesome. I mean, if someone was inhabiting the Ourobororganasm at the time. I mean, otherwise, I'm not sure I see the point, unless one partner or the other was interested in the extra girth or something.

The Universal Speed Limit and the Speed of Light are the same thing, as far as I can tell. Basically every massless particle travels at the same speed, but as humans are most familiar with light, it won the naming competition. Dabbler tends to say "U.S.L." because she's aware of and works with all sorts of massless particles in her tinkering. Though "c" is the same thing. I think it's a lowercase "c" specifically.

You know, since Supers don't get fat, they could just eat donuts and stuff swimming in hollandaise sauce all day and not have to worry about it. The do, however, still have to keep up with proper nutrition. There's definitely a Super or two out there that has gotten scurvy from eating nothing but cake. If only they had mixed it up with the occasional blueberry muffin and lemon scone.

I know cave paintings aren't "technology" but... I mean, they kind of are? They're definitely at the bottom of the tech tree, very slightly higher than "throw rock" but, you gotta start somewhere.

Lol. One of my fav pages

Reigys

If I remember correctly, they did something with a fibreoptic cable and super cooling so you could actually see light propagate with a high-speed camera... at some point in the last 20yrs.

Mathew Aaberg

Which blew my mind first time I heard it. Not knowing the photons were below max speed and had lots of wiggle room to speed up.

eddi_TBH

which is how you get Cherenkov Radiation in "pool" style reactor cores [glowing blue light in water while the radiation from the core exceeds the speed of light in water]

William Elliott

She may be sharing this with the researchers studying Superion Theory.

eddi_TBH

Working with pigments is very firmly in the chemistry field.

eddi_TBH

God bless America. Land that I lust.

eddi_TBH

The names of both America and California have a relation to early printing-era porn. Amerigo Vespucci wrote soft porn disguised as imaginary travelogs and California was an island in a literary porn novel. :) It's porn all the way down.

Erin Halfelven at BigCloset

The lowercase 'c' in physics is the speed of light in a vacuum (a perfect one which doesn't exist in very many places) A photon can slow down passing through other mediums, like air and water.

eddi_TBH

Every form of communication has been used to create erotica. TV took a longer time because it was hard to create specialized broadcasts. So we had to wait for cable.

eddi_TBH

Some new discoveries about hearing voices. Brain scan study shows what happens in the brain when a person with schizophrenia hears voices https://medicalxpress.com/news/2024-10-brain-scan-person-schizophrenia-voices.html

eddi_TBH

And learning to draw well takes considerable practice. All we have are the finished works. the learning process was probably done in the clay found in most of those caves.

eddi_TBH

I think "reache" should be "reach"

M. Lampi

Thanks for that both regular image and mental image. My mind may never recover. (I kid. That’s far from the worst thing I’ve seen on the internet

Aaron Mauthe

Yes, but that means the USL and c are two different things.

Czarzhan

They must have a different understanding of the limit. As in, they found ways to break the first limit, thus creating a new limit that becomes the universal limit until someone finds a way to break that one too.

Reigys

lol. The actual hearteyes. And the fact that I guess you could probably custom design a body to have those.

Reigys

I don't understand your response? I'm just saying that if you transplant your brain into a self sucking worm you'll only feel so much pleasure unless you also modify your brain.

codesurfer

That's related to the research that supposedly found that extra income didn't matter after a certain level. Unfortunately that doesn't hold up. It doesn't matter *if you're among the unhappiest people to start with*. The relation only held true for the 20% lowest happiness cohort. For the other cohorts, happiness kept going up. Which isn't surprising. If you're depressed because of a medical condition, or your family's been wiped out, or you're undergoing a bad divorce, your happiness doesn't depend on money beyond not starving.

Mark Magagna

Now I wonder if Harem would have any sort of lag if one of her was on another planet. That only happened once before and that incident involved time travel, so there were six of her and she freaked out for a bit.

Stefan J Neylon

I'm pretty sure Daphne's brain(s) do(es) not work the same as most humans. Just walking with 5 different bodies would be impossible. I mean, what if one body is going up stairs, one is climbing a ladder, one is walking on a sidewalk, one is standing and talking, and the fifth is hiking in wilderness? There is some research that indicates our minds aren't really a unified consciousness, any more than you actually see everything in your field of view. You actually see a little spot clearly, it's about as large as your thumb at arm's length. Your eyes move that spot around pretty much constantly. The rest of your field of view mostly sees movement, very well, but actual images poorly. Your mind stitches that all together. Likewise, the mind research seems to indicate you have a number of "actors", which cooperate to give you the impression of a unified consciousness. Which would go some way to explain the "voices in the head" of schizophrenia (if that's the right term) - the actors are not cooperating properly. So maybe Daphne has "super-actors', which are located in each body and cooperate over some unknown channels to give her the impression of a single mind over all her bodies.

From what I remember, Betamax tapes had a shorter maximum length but could shoot in higher resolution. Which may have limited what movies they could release on them. I think the equipment was also more expensive, but that may have been because it was a smaller market (which came first?) I guess the porn makers wanted longer tapes and resolution wasn't a big deal. If you're used to 8mm (the former standard for home movies), then VHS is a big step up... Now that I think of it, when DVDs came out I read something about porn makers worried that they'd have to use more makeup to hide zits etc. because the picture would actually be clear enough to see them.

Mark Magagna

Smut is why Betamax lost out to VHS. There is no other industry with as much power to influence which technology wins a challenge as the porn industry.

Anton Schleef

Modern understanding is also that it's mathematically impossible to transmit information through entanglement.

Fogel

"Smut drives all technology." Sounds about right, I believe someone once said: "the internet is for porn"

StarkT2K

Cave paintings come under the science of Communications. Very important for sentient advancement.

Town Crier

Aye, and the clones clearly aren't quite "acting as the same object" or even thinking as the same object. It's more like they're remembering together.

Richard Riley

Panel 8: She's not "looming", Sydney, she's showing you her cleavage, purely from habit.

Andrew Denton

The universal speed limit is already violated by the existence of FTL travel and communications.

Czarzhan

One of the current theories about quantum entanglement that blew my mind was the idea that two entangled particles are, in fact, one particle sitting in the mouth of a particle-size wormhole.

Czarzhan

I actually think cave paintings count, requires thought, experimentation, and skill of some kind. And the will to put something on that wall for some reason.

furry

It should either be: "magic reaches", "magics reach", or "magicks reache"

Jathby Dredas

I thought the entire point of quantum entanglement was that the two objects resonated simultaneously regardless of the distance between them in 3d space, because as far as the universe is concerned they are the same object. Information isn't "traveling" between them, it simply exists in both of them at the same time. This, of course, is my science fiction inundated brain talking, so it could be wrong.

Madcat6204

Cave paintings are definitely technology. I suppose in Civ terms they would count as mysticism. There are modern painters who wish their works would last that long.

Simon Magid

Now I wonder why Dabbler uses Greek symbols for math. And the Ourobororganasm reminds me a bit on the almost donut shaped ship in the Alien franchise film Prometheus.

Thomas Dorner

so unfortunately due to the brain's limits one can only receive so much of any stimulation (positive or negative) and achieving it for too long can modify one's base level mood. the philosophical side is called the Hedonistic Treadmill

codesurfer

yah, they said something about "spooky action at a distance"

William Elliott

(I believe the modern understanding is that entanglement is superluminal (and thus cross-time as well) but can't be used to transmit information from one end to the other.)

Darth Bayes

Everything is about sex, except tape, which is about power (I think that was the House of Cards thing). Also, I can simplify the whole discussion with this answer: a wizard did it. The end. 😆

Michael Obert

Panel 7 says "reache" which I think is either one too many "e"s or a missing "s"

Forecaster

But quantum entanglement breaks the USL! Bell inequality and the Aspect experiment in 1982 demonstrated the non-locality of quantum entanglement. It might be better said that *transfer of information* is subject to the USL.
