That's why Leng and his girlfriend had such a problem with getting married and why uncle Jim was concerned about her parents. Basically Leng didn't have enough money to pay for her (btw I don't really know a better way to phrase it, English is not my first language, but it's not really "buying" the bride it's more like a symbolic transaction). Jim bought Leng the necklace so he can give it to the bride's family and receive their blessing.
