I can’t say for Koreans in general. But as an American I know in some states if you speak another language at school it can lead to you being held back a grade and/or put in separate classes. I grew up in NYC and I learned English and Spanish when I was young however, as soon as I started school my parents and grandparents stopped speaking to me in Spanish and only spoke to me in English because if I spoke Spanish at school I’d get held back and put in ESL (English second language) classes. In some cases I had friends who where first generation from Hispanic places and the public school automatically held them back a grade because they didn’t have parents who spoke English fluently and figured the children wouldn’t be able to keep up with the class level. Since my parents didn’t want my education to be compromised or for me to fall behind my peers, they just stopped speaking to me in Spanish and I lost a lot of the language proficiency. Again I can’t speak about Korean specifically, but I do know that speaking other languages in elementary school in alot of states can hinder your education. So it might be a reason why first gen people don’t learn it, but I can’t say for sure

I used to be fluent in my second language as a kid but because no one really speaks it where I live now it's become very rusty, and my younger brothers don't speak the language at all even though they understand it, mainly because only our dad speaking to us in it growing up wasn't enough to sustain a fluent level.
