Lol you got me with that 'gay dads' comment. Most of these Chinese BLs have the main pairing have their dad arc for at least a bit of the story aha. MXTX (author for Heaven Officials Blessing) also wrote Mo Dao Zu Shi/The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (another great animated adaptation was made for that too) and the main couple basically adopt a kid in that too.

Banyue (the girl - the translations are weird in this version you have) overheard the soldiers saying that if their city fell, everyone - everyone, especially the civilians - should go grab all those explosives they had hidden and suicide bomb as many Yong'an towns and villages as possible. Dying in a battle is one thing, sending civilians to kill enemy civilians in a last-ditch revenge plot is something else. That is why she agreed to open the gates and that is why Pei Jr had to kill everyone, not just the soldiers. But when General Millstone realized she had betrayed them, he killed her and hung her on that pole over the Pit. Pei Jr failed to save her as he'd planned (and she may have given herself up out of guilt). Banyue became a ghost to capture all the wrathful ghosts of the soldiers. Pei Jr, hampered by Heavenly Rules, can't openly help her because she would be destroyed/taken prisoner along with the other ghosts. His plan to slowly send a few random travelers every once in a while was allowing her the chance to gradually trap the soldier ghosts in the Pit. Once they were all trapped, then they could be wiped out without her being taken as well. Awful choice, for the innocent travelers who became ghost food. But if he didn't keep his god status, he couldn't help her at all. So he's stuck in a no-win situation as well. You should watch the credits now, opening and closing - they'll be different next season. The music video at the end was to show us viewers what Hua Cheng's real form looks like - Xie Lian still doesn't know. The little bandaged kid is definitely Hua Cheng getting the umbrella Xie Lian left behind, praying at Xie Lian's statue (so he knows how to paint the god image), and maybe hearing a certain person say, "Live for me if you don't have anything else to live for."
