In ancient China, hair was seen as a gift from your parents and so cutting it was seen as disrespectful towards them! Also some guides on how to pronounce the MC’s names: Xie Lian is ‘Shee-yay Lee-yan’ and for Hua Cheng ‘Hwah Cch-yung’. (these are the examples given by the pronunciation guide in the book lol)
