Scanning...Scanning...

After some confusion (on my part) and several mistakes (ditto), almost everything in the new office equipment set-up is complete and operating. On the downside, while everthing is on the up-and-up, I don't know how a lot of the new stuff actually works. It's been about ten eyars since I had a new computer, and I'll be darned if I can't save anything as a jpeg any longer. I guess jpegs aren't cool anymore. Or haven't been for some time. So I'm super confused about how to scan stuff, because I used to scan stuff in photoshop (please, no snickering from the tech-savvy folks, I beg of you, pity an old fool). I feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark more than ever.

Still waiting for a printer, and then I'm cooking with gas. Or microwaving, since that's more my speed. I managed to print out the "Death Groove" script before we found out the new computer hates the old printer (I like to do revisions on paper before typing up the changes). And I don't know how to deal with invoices electronically, I still print them out, fill them out, scan them and e-mail them. So I haven't invoiced for the story yet. I run a loose ship.

Anyway, the first thing I scanned was a page of Eltingville art that I recently sold (Issue #2, page 7). I have no idea how to size things anymore (I never really did), or why I should size anything in the first place. Nothing is where I'm used to it being, drop down windows read differently than I'm used to, lots of extra steps and things to write down to try to follow (I have to write everything down a lot of the time when it comes to computer stuff). I've lost all the things I generally knew how to do, mostly learned from repetition rather than understanding how things operate. It's the same way I used to drive (pre-navigation thingies), or walk around Manhattan -- I couldn't tell you the directions or the street names, I just knew where to go visually, by habit and repetition.

I'm practicing using the scanner with a batch of Welcome to Eltingville story oards, since I've been behind on those (and everything else).

Unfortunately, since I began writing this post the computer's frozen three times. Speakers went out and track ball stopped working. First we thought the scanner was doing something to the computer, then the hub port. Switched things around and realized the track ball needed a new battery and that might be screwing something up. So far things have been going well since. Baby steps for the man-baby.

I think it's just an updated thing that I'm not used to. Sarah said a lot of things don't use jpegs anymore, she'd know better than mye. I'm such a basic user of computers and I was working on ten year-old equipment, and older versions of windows. So I don't think it's a worry as long as editors can open the files.

Hmmm, I can still save all my files as jpegs, weird. I hope you can get it figured out.
