A1 Deadline Kickstarter

Some of you older folks will remember Deadline magazine from the UK, which is where Jamie Hewlitt and Alan Martin's Tank Girl were born, along with Wired World by Phil Bond, Hugo Tate by Nick Abadziz and work by such folks as Shaky Kane, Glynn Dillon, Rachael Ball, D'Israeli, John McCrea, Si Spencer, Roger Langridge and the co-creators of the magazine, Brett Ewins (RIP) and Steve Dillon (RIP).

I was an American fan who stumbled into becoming the first and only American contributor that produced original work for the magazine. Later on Deadline reprinted stories from Love and Rockets and Hate, but I was a steady contributor doing new Milk & Cheese comics as well as some new Hectic Planet stories. When my schedule got heavier Deadline reprinted some Eltingville comics and some other odds and ends. Sarah and I did two covers for the magazine, one featuring Milk & Cheese and one of the band Fugazi (which I've ruined as a b&w recreation commission twice now, and am still working on the third version, still sitting in the waiting room but it shall be finished).

Anyway, former Deadline editor Dave Elliot has taken the reins of a new Deadline revival, pairing it with his A1 anthology which featured a bevy of UK cartooning talent. The first one-shot project is now up on Kickstarter, and will feature a mix of old and new material, black and white material being colored, and a mix of old and new creators from the UK and beyond. Old readers will find some favorites returning. Shaky Kane is doing new material, Roger Langridge has done a pinup, Tank Girl artist and all-around good fellow Rufus Dayglow is doing new material for the magazine. It's all art and comics, unlike the monthly magazine of old there won't be any music or pop culture articles. I'll be represented with a black and white M&C pinup, something folks have seen but which hasn't been in print before.

The magazine has already been funded, and they've just reached a stretch goal that will include an exclusive Milk & Cheese sticker (yay!). If things continue to do well they may add pages and we're talking about coloring an old Milk & Cheese strip if that happens. If A1 Deadline moves forward with more issues and adds more original material, I've agreed to make new Milk & Cheese comics for the project. Good lord, choke! I might have to draw comics! Maybe I should consider that carpal tunnel surgery...

(The M&C sticker art has a coloring mistake but Dave assured me they will fix it)

Comments

Deadline was my intro to your work. so many good times. (Exit by Nabiel Kanan was also stunning in that large print size.)

Dan Abel

I do get that from time to time, also some folks thought I was from Wisconsin because The Onion ran Milk & Cheese a fe w times while it still only a newspaper back in the day.

I thought you were British because of M&C in Deadline, until I started following you on here.
