Yesterday was the fourth-year anniversary of my first meeting Winky the Pirate Cat. I had come home from an appointment -- I think it was a therapy appointment -- and as I parked the car in front of the house this little cat trotted by on the sidewalk.

Sarah had told me that she saw a little cat outside earlier in the week, so I assumed this was the same little gremlin. I called to the cat and it came directly over. I played with her and she followed me up our front stairs and I gave her some cat food. I spent some time with her throughout the next few hours, checking on her and giving her pets. Of course I was already in love!

We weren't in a good position to take in a second cat so I started thinking of what I could do to find the little street orphan a home.

The next day, on May 11th, we spent more time with her, fed her and played with her, and I held her up and we watched the sky together as night fell (photo below). We called her "the little girl".

She wouldn't have a proper name for a while longer, and she wouldn't be my cat until a few days later.

Sometimes the good things come so unexpectedly. The cats are really an interesting case, they adopt the family, you can’t adopt them!, and when you don’t expect it, the years past and they become your best friends (that happened to me with my baby). Winky looks so cute Mr. Dorkin!, happy winky month! 💗

Got me thinking: The first cat I adopted as an adult I got from David Mazzucchelli and Richmond Lewis (which is how I met them, through Robbie Busch). The second I found in a pet shop and thought Sarah would like it. The third was put out of the house and was going to be abandoned by a neighbor and we took him in after building him a shelter in our yard. Fourth we saw a notice on a bulletin board at a Japanese market in NJ and it was Sarah's "type" and we went for it. Fifth was adopted from a family that had a lot of pets and had rescued her. Sixth was Winky, who ran into our house. I hope there's several more to come...

I love how the answer to the question "So how did you come to own this cat?" is usually "It just sort of showed up one day. It took a quick look around and decided that it lives here, now."
