What are you excited about right now?

All of the news feels equally terrifying. I know that you and all the other people reading these words right now are going to do wonderful things this week: in your community, in your work, in your brains and your hearts, and in the way you take care of yourselves and each other.

And, as so many of us are learning lately, the care we can offer is greater if we can find a little peace and joy in our daily lives, wherever it may be. Where are you finding it? What are you excited about?

I am excited (as always) about seeds. I've got some little cabbage seedlings going in my laundry room, plus hibiscus, onion, strawflower, and luffa gourds.* (I want to start more things but I have to make more room in my pantry first and assemble some shelving to fit into the gap between the dryer and the wall, but that is an infinitely put offable task.)

As someone who lives alone and sometimes has a lot of trouble getting out of bed, having a little project to check on and care for helps me a lot--not because it's an obligation, but because it's exciting. How are the tiny cabbages looking? For whatever reason, that question is enough to make me leap out of bed.

"Giant Cabbage with Woman and Mountains," featured on the Alaska State Fair website

So thank you, cabbage. And my thanks to whatever is bringing you joy this day, this week, and this year. I would love for you all to share in the comments whatever is exciting to you lately--a song, a smell, a hobby, a fact, a joke. We could all use some tips these days. And we could all use more community. Thank you for being in this one.

Your pal,
Sarah <3

*Seed catalogs are their own joy. A seed catalog and a cup of tea and a cookie? Are you kidding me?? The dream. Fedco and Nichols are two of my personal favorites. (And my mom would want me to tell you that planting seeds from a company in your region will set you up for success.) Filaree Garlic Farm sold me a lot of wonderful seed garlic last fall, and they also have very soft t-shirts.

ETA: It's getting real dusty in here.

Walking outside and just standing in the sunshine on the days it’s warm. Eyes closed and face to the sky. Those moments of warmth fill my soul and keep me going. Love this community!! It also keeps me going.

We got an 8 week old puppy on December 27th. He is bringing so much joy into my family’s life. Seems unfair to put the burden of all of our happiness on a tiny goofball who still trips over his own paws but he’s handling it marvelously! Cheers to our wee Owen!

I am excited about the party I am planning to celebrate my dog's 15th birthday! I feel so grateful to have so much time with my sweet Percy, and so many loved ones who are part of our lives.

Jillyn Spencer

Congratulations! It's such a shame you have to worry about getting your child the care they literally need. Great job advocating for your daughter!!<3 this made me smile.

I started volunteering with the Prisoners Literature Project! We send books to incarcerated people who write in with requests, and the high point of my week was getting to send someone a good book on beekeeping.

I’ve decided to quit my boring office job! I’ve been saying I would do this for a while, but there was always a reason not to. With all the things in the world that I can’t control, I realized that my job is a bad thing in my life that I actually do have the ability to change. So, I finally found the motivation and have started applying for other jobs and with any luck, I’ll be out of here in a few months. I’m very excited about that!

Emma

The start of the baseball season here in the UK - we have women's baseball and I am looking forward to spending more time with my friends and my community (women's sport is very queer!)

I'm excited about karaoke nights with my friends! I live 3 hours away from my circle, but once a month or so I drive home and do karaoke in my friend's basement. My husband goes to play MtG every Wednesday, so I use that time to practice my upcoming karaoke routines and workshop outfits.

I know my plants wish for a new caretaker, but they are stuck with me, poor things... 😂 Sooooo i'm excited that i adopted a new kitten (second cat in the house) and it has being an adventure 😻

It’s been years since I’ve been consistent with practicing my harp and I decided this year to start up again. I’ve been learning a piece I’ve had wanted to learn for a long time and it brings me so much peace

My new baby! 😍

Lowri Jones

Started rock climbing with a new group of friends. We all encourage eachother and just have a good time. We also get together to watch movies, play video games and make eachother nourishing meals. Just feels nice and natural

Fae Hadlock

I started a minecraft server with friends, it's the first time I'm playing with others and I'm terrible at fighting but okay at building, it's great.

Weekly karaoke at my friend’s goth house has been making me happy. It’s a great way to share music with friends. The number of participants keeps growing, and we’ve started picking themes—like cunty songs and life story songs. It’s just the best time (even those of us who can’t sing)!

Simone de Boudoir

I am adopting a second rescue cat and he comes home this Sunday :)

Victoria Tang

I pooped for the first time today after a gender affirming hysterectomy 🙃 (iykyk)

I had a juvie bald eagle in my yard last week, super exciting!

Abby Krahling

I started reading Jane Austen novels during the pandemic and I’ve been reading one a year. This year is my last Jane Austen novel and I’m so excited to read it but dreading not being able to read any of them for the first time.

Abby Krahling

I'm excited for warmer weather, longer days, playing ball, and having more opportunities to spend time with friends out in the fresh air.

Emily Hose

I'm personally really excited for my daughter to start gender affirming care next month. It's been a LONG process to get here. With all the new stuff coming down I was really concerned. I'm happy to report that our clinic is still moving forward as normal 💜

Megan Gregor

Exactly, Erin! We‘ll be channelling this spirit next weekend - and hopefully turn things around or at least show that we are still so many more 💪 Sending all the best to you!

K. W.

I am hoping that watching what is happening in the US breaks some of the AfD coalition, it seems to be working somewhat in Canada. At least let our suffering, caused by under 25% of our population's worst idiots, be a cautionary tale to the world in spots where elections have not yet occurred. You can still turn that bus around! We are rooting for you in NYC!

Erin Madigan

I am excited about a bald eagle that has returned to my neighborhood in Queens, NY. It comes every January-ish and hangs out until April-ish, sometimes with a mate, sometimes solo. It's a dirtbag bird...just this week I saw it trying to steal food from a gull midair, but it is an apt metaphor for our country (the turkey was indeed too noble to be our national bird). This past year in NYC we have had a lot of sightings of dolphins and seals too -- I am trying to enjoy the amazing progress we have made over the past 80 or so years with environmental cleanup and restoration. These creatures to come back to even our most urban spots is awesome and I hope we can find a way to save some of the protections that made it possible.

Erin Madigan

It'll sound so random, but I'm excited about all the people I've convinced to watch M*A*S*H, either for the first time or as a re-watch. It's been incredible to revisit and share such a funny, humanistic, and frankly queer (lol) show over the last year and a half. It's that particular feeling of sharing something you love, and getting to see people fall in love with it for many of tge same reasons you did.

Vic Shakapopulis

I'm excited about all the work my sex worker advocacy group is doing! And finally getting to go back to school :)

Laura Torlaschi

I'm excited about the new growth my backyard perrenial plants and grasses will bring, when it's warm enough. This coming spring will be the third spring in my 'new' old house. As the saying goes, the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap. I can't wait for all the leaping this year!! 🌱❤️

RIII

I'm excited for your seeds! I'm excited for the gift I bought myself of a huge stash of books from the 80s and 90s, on the Satanic Panic. Small packages from Thriftbooks keep showing up, and it's a little surprise each time to see what each holds.

Katie Larson

also, on the subject of seeds, my local public library has a “seed library”, where members of the community bring in seeds to share in sort of a take a seed, leave a seed format. i’ve always thought it was a great idea, and if seeds make anyone else happy the way they do Sarah, maybe you could start a similar initiative in your community☺️

I’m excited about being the props designer for an original one-act play being put on by a youth drama festival in my city! it’s my first time ever being in charge of a department in a theatre production before, and i love the script so much!

The new Captain America movie!!! It’s great!

I work at a high school traveling from class to class and my joy had been listening to this young man in two of my classes recruit players, guide them through character generation and now I’m hearing snippets of their adventures. Amazing! Good luck with your campaign 🙂

I’m taking a week off starting tomorrow. Going to maybe make some bread and some homemade dog biscuits for my fur baby grandma. Would love to get out to snowshoe. Going to sleep in a couple days.

I’ve been making and sharing zines that celebrate things I love! (people watching, museums, the poet frank o’hara, poetry, birds, nintendo, nostalgia, etc)

143 houseplants, of various sizes and ages, between 3 and 9 years old. Also, watercolor painting. Fucking. Watercolor. Absurd amounts of watercolor paintings. Also, a very weird 7 lb cute elderly lady dog. And trying to help my 22 year old son Baylor figure out how to transition ( in the healthiest way possible) from being in a super toxic relationship to being a content single adult. That last one... Sometimes it brings me joy, sometimes it's just a lot of really heavy laundry. He's 6 foot 5. It's winter here, so his clothes weigh A TON! I suppose I should add... Setting healthy boundaries with said son is a lot like planting cabbage.I have to hope it will end up bearing some rewarding "fruit". Hopefully before October!

Heidi Webster

I've been learning about 3D modelling and animation and also really focusing on improving my drawing skills. Recently started a figure drawing class and planning to take more art classes in the future. Feeling very optimistic and excited about creating art!

I finished watching Arcane and enjoyed it! Because some other friends watched it independently at the same time- I’ve been chatting with a friend who’s been distant for a year or so now!

I'm a couple weeks on testosterone and I'm so happy and excited. Every day I actually want to get out of bed, so I can shower and put my tgel on. I'm already so much more myself and comfortable, in ways I didn't realise I could be a couple of weeks ago. Here's to my endocrinologist 💪

Also seeds, but not for a veggie garden— my wooded yard in the south Eugene hills does not lend itself to growing vegetables, aside from the occasional small tomato in a pot. But I’ve been getting obsessed with native plants for my region over the last few years, and have been gradually planting native plants, removing invasives, and creating habitat for native critters. I got certified last year through a backyard habitat program in my city, and am eager to see what grows this year. This is my first year trying seeds rather than buying plants, so it’s a bit exciting and also nail-biting— will they germinate? Will they thrive? Will the slugs and birds demolish them? I also love planting bare-root plants in the winter, because then I get inordinately invested in “checking my sticks” every day to see if they’re sprouting. I’ve also started dabbling in watercolors. It’s a creative practice in which I have no obligations or self-expectations, and just the practice of moving some water and color around on paper is its own reward.

The ongoing campaign LARP I've been part of for 5 years is starting up its spring term and I am so excited, I've been waiting for it impatiently all December and January. ^^ I get to experience amazing stories with my friends again, yay!

Me and my good friend (30 and 40) years old have discovered we have both never read OR watched Twilight. So, we are going on the journey together. We just finished New Moon and we are both Team Jacob at this point.

I started a zoom book club with my sister and our friends in another state. We meet once a month to discuss our lives and a new book. I’m reading more than ever and it’s so nice to have a date to catch up with long distance friends.

Kelly Schimpf

My friends and I have started an arts collective a year ago and next month we have a kids’ art class, fiber arts and painting classes for adults, an open mic, a poetry reading, cookbook club, a crafting club meet up and a theater festival all on deck because people in our small town are all so excited about having more arts experiences available. It’s so amazing to see people getting excited about our project.

Emily Cicora

my sister is pregnant, so i’m excited to get an endless stream of cute baby pics and cuddles! and to see my sister be a mom for the first time :)

I’m excited to run Dungeons & Dragons for my friends tonight. I’ve been prepping this session for a few weeks and I think m everyone is gonna have a blast.

Love the comments! I think sharing these ideas helps all of us look for opportunities to be happier. I'm trying to appreciate daily the good things in my life; work I love, living in a beautiful place, being surrounded by amazing people, horses, and dogs.

* I just started a monthly flower subscription from a local florist owned by Black women. * I'm helping my son's school start a 4H club and we're going to have chickens and rockets and entomology (his school is 85% ESL and I'm so excited to work with these amazing parents) * I'm about to have my second Valentine's Day with my boyfriend. I was married for 10 years and my husband died of ALS In 2022. It's been incredibly complicated getting back out into the the world of dating but I'm excited to be celebrating with someone I love. * I live in Aurora, one of Trump's targets, and I'm working with my neighbors to create a neighborhood association because we love each other so much and we want to keep each other safe.

So many new movies to see! I have an alamo season pass and want to go as much as I can, by myself and with friends to share joy and be stimulated

Marisol Gonzalez

I’m excited to talk to my friend tomorrow! Such a small thing but she lives half a world away from me and I’ve been so happy to see how even with distance (and admittedly work) a friendship can blossom. Now we have a monthly chat which inevitably gets rescheduled but never by more than a few days.

Naomi

I'm excited about a lot of growth these days. Healthy growth. I have sowed some chili and tomato seeds, and the first ones have just started to sprout. I'm also knitting a shawl that is steadily growing on the needles, and I'm excited to see if my hair starts growing again soon, after I finished chemotherapy two weeks ago.

Maria

Aaaaw, that's lovely! 🥰 Congratulations on the little one!

Maria

I finished a knitting project, so I am planning the next knitting project! I only have trouble deciding in which yarn…

Julie Erick

Congratulations! That's awesome! 😃

My spouse and I are getting ready to throw our annual “Valloween” party. I’m looking forward to pampering my friends and showing them that I love them by throwing a great Halloween party instead of people feeling overly-conscious about their relationship status with a normal Valentine’s Day.

Leslie

Thank you Sarah ♥️ I am excited to lean into my community this year.

Lis Henderson

It’s garden planning time!! Between that at my dungeons and dragons game, that’s where I am getting my joy right now.

You could get some letter beads and make a bracelet with your new name! (Sparkles are a plus in my book too). Congratulations!

I am *finally* getting my legal name change in a little over a week! I’m excited and nervous, but also taking suggestions for ways to celebrate! Also, my partner is the most wonderful woman in the world and that brings me joy every day.

My son’s robotics team did an amazing job in their season that just ended. I was a coach despite knowing nothing about robotics. It was a joy and inspiration to see 9-13 year old kids who are so creative and motivated. The future is bright!

Tomorrow night my husband and I will be taking a first lindy hop lesson in a programme of a couple months. I hope the time of getting my two left feet to work together will turn off the massive anxiety and we will be able to laugh. I'm not even in the States, I can't imagine how you guys are feeling...

irina

Last year for my 30th birthday I hosted a reading of Into The Woods in my living room. All my friends learned the music, and we sang to karaoke tracks. This year I'm doing it again! Nothing makes me feel as amazing as singing with my best friends. ❤️

I recently took a pottery workshop and for the first time in my life I feel creative!

Oh my god I totally forgot to mention I have two new cats in my life and it took a long time to come to a decision to get cats again after long illnesses with our old cats and the new pair are an. Absolute. Joy. I love them so much.

Heading out on JoCo Cruise in a few weeks is serving life right now. Plus the thought of Portland spring and seeing what my new trees (4 planted this winter) will look like is so exciting. Hope your seedlings do well! <3

Just in case it is helpful, there are “wild” swimming guided vacations where you can swim in groups in lakes and salt water. One provider is called SwimTrek; I’ve not yet been, but I know several fellow swimmers who have gone to Turkey and loved it.

I started attending Yang tai chi classes in nyc. I have no martial arts background and lots of incorrect muscle memory. It’s is very challenging and I definitely am experiencing beginner’s mind at 53 which is a wonderful escape from the news.

I’m excited to work with a friend who is a bookbinder to make a very limited run of my original comic series, Empty Mouth. It’s a queer, near future, anti capitalist horror romance where a human janitor, a smartwatch, a fungal superorganism, and a corporate god fall in love and change their small corner of the world simply because they’re supporting each other as everything they know breaks down around them. I’m really excited to write and draw the story without worrying about community guidelines or censorship. I’m just going to make a few books by hand with a dear friend to help me process the forces at work in the world, and to hopefully survive them. Maybe my story will help a few people weather the storm, too.

WOW! Congratulations!

A Gunn, Banjo Boy of the Flatlands with two working kidneys

Went to a community farm this morning to participate in a skill share for planting seeds and tending seedlings and one of my good friends was there, he and I went and got banh mi afterwards. I live in Louisiana so it's already warm and today I planted out larkspur, dill, hungarian poppy and something new to me call cucuzza, which is an Italian gourd that has a faster fruiting time than the zucchini. My band is playing a show on Thursday night and we decided to have it slumber party themed, we're all going to wear our PJ's and we've invited attendees to do the same.

I've been making friendship-bracelet style rave kandi. I've been trying to make the weirdest phrases possible! Some that I've done are Straight Gumpin, Squinchy, and T4T (that one isn't weird, but it is cute). Suggestions welcome!

I've been a type 2 diabetic since I was 12 years old. A week ago, after completing my labs, I was texted by my doctor. He congratulated me and told me my diabetes was officially under control. I struggled for 21 years and I am finally in a healthy range. I cried. It may not seem like much, but for me I felt like I was walking on air.

Hannah B

I've been sewing. It's great to have an activity that I can do with my hands while doing something else (like listening to a podcast) and that is both creative and functional. I've been doing a lot of mending and altering preexisting clothes. I'm currently putting the finishing touches on a cosplay that's mostly made of thrifted pieces, and in the future I want to start making my own plushies.

I know this is a little lame but fedco is great and they do local fundraisers for Maine schools and libraries. If you order seeds through this link you’ll be supporting Maines oldest library still operating in its original building, where I volunteer, and where we are dedicated to staying open (even as a nonprofit in a small community) and vibrant. (You won’t get your seeds until March tho). Volunteering here gives me immense joy! https://fedcoseeds.com/fundraisers/HUBBARDLIB

Some of my rediscovered joy is playing handbells! I wasn't able to for 6 months due to breaking my arm and finger last year, and so getting back to it has been absolutely marvelous!! ❤️❤️

I'm looking forward to making and sharing origami valentines with everyone I love ❤️

There’s (another) podcast called I Said No Gifts. It’s hosted by a tv writer named Bridger Winegar and involves comedians disregarding his one rule and bringing a gift. It’s simply fun and not stressful. I would be facilitated in a crossover, as he is gay and grew up Mormon in Utah. Side note: Paula Poundstone gave him worm waste fertilizer, that she got really into producing during the pandemic. Food for thought with gardening.

Robert W

I bake bread for family and friends, and I’ve started a monthly bread share in my community. People pay me a small monthly fee and I deliver a fresh loaf of bread to them every week. I’m using any funds leftover after supply costs to fill the Little Free Pantry by my gym once a week. It’s keeping me talking to my community and giving me a way to help in a little way I can see.

Lindsey Schilling

I also do roller derby!! Where are you located if you don't mind sharing?

I did the same! My frenchie presenting rescue wound up being 50% english, 25% pit and 25% Boston. So funny how dog genetics works!

I am working on creating community and connecting with my migrant neighbors and friends. There is no lack of culture and love to go around.

I'm in a play right now! I haven't done theater since high school but it's been SO wonderful to get onstage and perform again. It's so funny how sometimes it takes stepping into a different person's shoes to feel the most like yourself.

I have been trying to be more social and not isolate. Since Covid I’ve had a very hard time going to events, public places, ect. But I’ve been making a lot Of progress with that and spending time with friends. It’s tough but I’m doing it. Thanks as always Sarah!

I have a seven week old that is starting to smile and giggle!

I’ve always wondered what breed my small goofy pit bull looking rescue dog was and this holiday I was gifted a dog dna test! Well the results are in and I have a dog that is 47% Pit Bull, 14% Boston terrier, 11% Staffordshire terrier, 11% pug (lol), and 3% bull dog. The funniest being the pug (I guess that’s where she gets her snoring from). My sweet goofy girl was a rescue from my college town, and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I don’t care what breed she is, but it’s cute to look at her silly face and know where her little quirks are from.

Sara Hunt

I’m reading a great British murder mystery, with a perfect martini, good music, and my cats. I also take very spontaneous trips to the local Goodwill where I look for items that remind me of the 1960’s and 70’s. Sarah Marshall, hearing your laughter and voice is a wonderful boost to the mood. Even if you are talking about something rather unpleasant…

Arthur Oliver

I have the same getting out of bed issue, but the two kittens I'm socializing has helped me in a similar way the seedlings have helped you. The routine snapped me back as well as the hope that they'll trust and love me someday (feels like a long road at this point but they're inching there).

If you like lace work at all check out Herbert Niebling's designs. Yes they are almost entirely doily and tablecloth patterns, dont be deterred, they turn into amazing shawls and blankets!

Sarah I teach children Horticulture and run a greenhouse for a school. I have many seeds, let me know if you would like to trade or try something new!

Katie

Thank you for the reminder, I have just ordered 90 strawberry plants from Fedco, and two American Chestnut trees as a gift to my partner. I ordered the trees knowing that they are not resistant to the blight that wiped out most of their community, that they may only live a shorter life than they would have had we not allowed a pestilence into our landscape before we knew better. But they will grow and provide shade and beauty and food for many years, and while we wait for them to grow we will have strawberries. And while we wait, a group of dedicated humans are fighting a slow fight to save the whole species from extinction.

Karen Savage

I'm on my way to a writing retreat in the North of England, where I'm hoping to make some progress on a PhD chapter that I've been stuck on, and also to get some rest during a prolonged chronic illness flare. I'm on a whole gorgeous journey of self acceptance and actualization. I'm becoming, you know? I've been very into the song Complainer by Cold War Kids, which is encouraging me to stand up and show them who I am. A compassionate person who doesn't take any shit. Thank you, Sarah, for everything you choose to share with us!

My choir got new music and I really feel like it's coming together now. I'm singing tenor this season and, as the only lady tenor, I feel very empowered to sing with my whole chest. The low notes hit hard for me. I can't wait to perform with an orchestra!

I am excited about searching for super cute knit top patterns to sew with all the drapey viscose bamboo fabric I have, and then wearing a bunch of them to New York in a couple months! Yay!

Emily Hunter

This is reminding me how much I wish I had started seeds this weekend but maybe next! I got some stickers finished to raise money for my local Trans center. Already made 8 bucks for them! Excited!

I’m excited to read all of these wonderful posts about life’s big and little moments. ❤️

I've been hosting regular dinner parties for all my queer friends. Sometimes only one or two can make it and sometimes we have a full house. It's been great having something to look forward to and I'm constantly surprised at how little space I actually need just to have some friends over. We are truly keeping each other afloat! Pro Tips I Needed: Your friends won't look at your baseboards and they don't care if your sink has dishes in it. Just set a day and send the invites! The first time is the hardest but it is so, so worth it.

Starting seedlings and planning my garden is solely what gets me through this time of year! A good friend's relationship ended last year and he's had to move into an apartment, away from his garden. I'm going to ask him to split my garden this year and we can nurture it together. I could use the help, too, since we now have a baby!

Allison Akright

I'm in my first real relationship after figuring out I'm gay in my late twenties and I'm excited learning what feeling supported and loved in a romantic relationship can be like. Life has been hard for us both since we started dating but we make each other laugh and feel safe. And we're going to a Valentine-themed scarehouse on Friday, which I think is pretty sweet.

One easy act that anyone can do to protect immigrant communities is to distribute these Red Cards. They tell citizens and noncitizens alike how to assert their constitutional rights if ICE come to their door. https://www.ilrc.org/red-cards-tarjetas-rojas

After years and years of collecting information about a certain pop culture force of a bygone era, I've decided to outline what a book about that thing could possibly look like. I think I could make this happen. Writing has long been a dream of mine. I get to re-collect this long known information from a research POV. I am very optimistic.

I finally got a job I like after really struggling to find work when I moved across the country and this month a couple old friends are collaborating on a project with me in my new job. It feels really special to make some art with my old community and my new community together.

I’ve been listening to and Becky Chambers Wayfarer sci-fi books, which tell beautiful stories about interconnectedness, cooperation and empathy… and crying crying crying in bed. Oh and I’ve been taking Epsom salt bubble baths every night since Election Day. If you know a trans person please reach out to them. I am lucky to have a loving community around me so the trauma and fear of being denied a passport is a little easier to take. As an anti-fascist activist and progressive organizer out of Philly I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you to find your local Working Families Party or Indivisible groups. If you don’t have a local chapters please start them. They have actions you can take with their We Choose To Fight coalition and have been organizing local communities to make them more resilient to fascist decline for almost a decade now. Remember that you don’t need to “stay up to date” on social media or doom scroll. Save your bandwidth to take the brave actions you will need to when the time comes. Solidarity forever. Xoxo

I am a legal drug dealer of cannabis and I couldn't be more happy to be able to help medicate other humans through these trying times 💚

Tasha

I'm excited to go to a rom com movie trivia with my best friends tomorrow night (put on by our local library) and drive to see more friends across the state next weekend.

Sierra Onickel

i’m getting really into cross stitching and it feels so good to have something to occupy my hands and my mind

jo

I just got Chappell Roan's LP and everyone has loved that on our dance floor.

DJ Tozer

The cabbages are lucky to have you look after them. And we are fortunate to all find joy where we can. [Remembering to breathe can be difficult when the situation is so dystopic.] I'm part of a volunteer board of a small theatre in the midwest and we are keeping open, hosting open mic nights, karaoke, comedy, musicians and other performers. My part is being treasurer, scheduling 5 hours of films each Sunday (for coffee matinees), doing box office, and occasional vinyl DJ. This weekend I realized what is going to keep up all LIVING. After playing some songs after a comedy show, and seeing folks visit and dance (after a much needed laugh), of how vital this is. The connection, the movement, the community. The space and place for people to find meaningful connections, develop friendships. And I was in my upstairs space dancing my butt off. Sarah, thank you for also providing a space to re-evaluate our shared pasts and media, to provide space that encourages kindness, critical thinking, and thoughtfulness. Know how valuable that is to so many of us. We need to take time to be kind to ourselves, and know we are all valued. Peace and take care to everyone.

DJ Tozer

Thank you! And thanks for sharing the book, I'm going to check it out :)

Paige

I’m excited about Lady Gaga’s new song Abracadabra and dancing in the kitchen with my partner with the music too loud!

Rose Holiskey

Love all these posts! After so much hard work, I'm excited that my solo "Before These Witnesses" has opened at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, CA. It was a lot of work that I've never done before during some of the most difficult moments—it's about the political, social, aesthetic, and personal aspects of weddings and their social rituals—who had been included and also how far more expansive the past is than what most understand it as now.

Daisy Patton

all I want to do in my free time is learn increasingly more complex knitting stitches and patterns while watching long youtube videos about theme parks. 10/10 delightful combination

Birch

This! Rock climbing totally expanded my world. The people in it are wonderful!

Deirdre Hamilton

I've been giggling and kicking my feet in the air over a (devastating) comic about two hitmen who are too stupid to realize they're in love with each other ❤️

🅱

What is a “swimming holiday”? Is it like hiking but you swim instead?? Sorry for my stupid questions 😂 I went to Greece in September and it was amazing. I fretted over the money too but it was worth it!

Jen Leedom

I started baking at a local vegan restaurant on Sundays!

Gloria

I’m winter sowing plants in milk jugs and getting into vermicomposting. Hands across the garden bed to you, Sarah <3.

Katherine Vandall

I’ve been taking my dog on a walk everyday past a pond and everyday we look for two blue herons who have made it their home, along with quite a few turtles. Now my camera roll is filled with pictures of herons and turtles and other animals we’ve seen over the weeks (an otter once!!). It’s what gets me through my day

Ali

I’m taking a class on fungi right now. This past week there was a lecture on fungi that cause diseases in plants and how these fungi develop resistance to fungicides. There are several ways in which fungi can adapt, but my favorite is that they can sometimes produce enzymes that break down the fungicide, making it ineffective. I find it really exciting when nature fights back.

Sage Bartow

I'm starting a podcast project to celebrate my friends and their incredible capacity for vulnerability and empathy.

Tonya

Booked a swimming holiday to Greece with my sister. I fretted over the spend but reddit (lol) helped me realise I’ll only live once, and I haven’t been on a proper long holiday for 8 years. Also means I have to start regularly swimming to build up stamina and I’m loving it. News is grim but I have something to look forward to.

Sabina Gerardi

I’m excited that my Artist’s Way reading deprivation week is over so I can gorge myself on episodes of You’re Wrong About without compunction once again. Still keeping away from social media, though. One of these medias regulates my nervous system and the other certainly does not.

Kate Powell

I have a three year old and her development is pretty cool to watch

Andy Bartholomew

I’m excited about my seeds, and that I’m getting better at pottery, and that more people want to help me make food for my unhoused neighbors.

Laura Patterson

I'm excited that 5,000 Providence health Care workers in Oregon are standing up for patients, refusing to let Providence get away with breaking state law. Today is day 31 of the largest healthcare worker strike in Oregon and I'm proud to support them. Because laws only work if people enforce them, and these brave people are willing to put it all on the line to protect all of us in Oregon.

Brianna Bertoglio

I saw a crocus breaking through. I finished knitted thrummed mittens today--they are lovely and squishy. I've had some general anxiety this weekend--everything is a lot. Too much. But I am finding joy. You are one of my joys, too. Thank you. 😊

Jennifer Wysokowski

Planted some trees for Tu B'shvat and I'm excited to see how they do into the spring, next year, etc

Z

I bought a hammock and it might be the best $25 I've ever spent. I'm in it pretty much every day it's not raining. I've been taking group ice skating classes for almost a year and even though I might be stuck in my current class forever because I can't get my stupid three turns, I love it so much. I'm insufferable about it.

Beth Harrison

i’m learning to rock climb (and relatedly to make friends as an adult)!

kaity

I have the stupidest game on my phone, Bus Escape - Traffic Jam, that is bringing me unreasonable joy

Gretchen Sprinkle

The third installment of a book series I loved last year is coming out in two days! Already pre-ordered and can't wait to finally read it

Our school district instructed employees that under no circumstances should they let ICE officials in any of the buildings. They're to call the superintendent who will take any documentation for review. (See 5-4 Patreon for compliance guidance).

I'm pretty stoked about the upcoming Superman movie, which hopefully will end the reign of the Grim Dark Supermen once and for all.

Pablo Barría Urenda

I’m celebrating being half way through chemo and planning fun things for after!

Alicat

The weather has warmed up and there are birds singing and the woods sound very alive. Being outside really helps me relax my mind (even if I'm just doing whatever I would have been doing inside!) I took a very lovely nap in a hammock yesterday as the sun was setting.

Credence

I'm giving a talk about resting at my meditation group tonight. Excited to see what people think.

Kristen Perry

Last year, I moved away from a lot of really good friends in the major city I used to live. I now live with my Dad in my childhood home across the world. I'm excited about spending all this time with him, as well as finding ways to collaborate and stay in touch with faraway community despite the distance.

Kanya Abe

I just partially frogged a cardigan I'm knitting in order to change the colour of one section and now I'm super happy with it! Yay for making it up and for changing our minds!

Laan Taylor

I joined a rec league ice hockey team this year after taking learn-to-play lessons, and it's been really fun so far! I want to keep improving my skills and get better and better. Hopefully I'll build some new friendships with my teammates too.

Erin

I accepted a job offer at an academic library, started going to a book club, and started taking Prozac. All are big steps after 6 lonely months since moving to a new city for my wife's job, and struggling to figure out what to do with myself

Rosa Moore

I recently read Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May and there's a whole chapter about how swimming in cold water helped her. Good luck!

Allison L

Oh also I have a VERY old YWA shirt that has the balloons and NO on it. 💙

Jaime Lee Ezell

I saved enough money to take my kids to Disney! We are doing it the cheap way, bringing our own food and staying off site but I’m still thrilled I can do this for them! I’m a single mom of 5, I’m in school to become a teacher. Y’all’s show is a beacon of hope for me!! Love y’all. Losing the election felt like the end of the world and your show gives me joy and hope. Both YWA and You Are Good!

Jaime Lee Ezell

It will be in the inaugural issue of Feminist Translation Studies Journal some time in 2025!

Leah Anderson

I'm 16 months into recovering from being hit by a truck while walking across the street. I'm going to take my first polar dip (of hopefully many) this week. The doctor for my primary injury let me know he had a patient who no longer needed treatment after taking up the practice. I'm not anticipating a cure-all but I am feeling hopeful about the future for the first time in a long time.

Paige

Husband and I are in Japan for 2 weeks, living it up and having a nice vacation! I'm also excited about getting involved in local movements to promote clean energy projects. I gave testimony in favor of an industrial solar farming project in my county last month, and made several friends in the process!

Lara Flaute

I started a beginners pilates class and I'm proud of myself for not giving up on my first exercise in years. There's even someone who I have started talking to.

Caitlin

I've been crocheting amirugami, and I'm very proud of the snail I finished yesterday 🐌

River

I’m excited the younger generation is very cinema curious! I run a small movie shop and I curate the selection toward my tastes and it’s so regularly met with “this is good stuff” or “I’ve always heard about this and wanted to see it!” Relatedly, I’m delighted about the current state of indie film and what’s making the rounds. Cinema is alive! That’s something that makes me happy.

KB Singer

I’m in the process of de/reconstructing a sweater I’m knitting, and the challenge is keeping me excited!

Ally Putvin

My daughter just turned 6 months so we are starting to experiment with solid foods! We mashed up some potatoes for her last night.

Rach

I’m learning how to sew and I’m exited to make my first jacket with shiny purple fabric from a thrifted dress.

Becky Tachihara

I'm planting a few herbs which I am excited about. Your episode about the I Hate To Cook book has also inspired me to get to work on simple recipes. My parents were cooks and although they taught me a lot, they also frequently forgot what it was like to be an amateur. To this day I crack easily under pressure when cooking. But I'm inspired by the thought that a good meal can be easier than I think.

Tiffany Howard

I've made a signature candle scent with sandalwood, white tea, and paloma fragrances. I named it "Honesty" because that's what it smelled like. Considering creating a series of candles based off of values I care about just for shits and giggs.

Sydney Stone

New term of pottery class starts tonight!

Sara Amorosi

I love my new E-reader (kobo) and it’s been helping me read more. It snowed heavily in nyc and last night I felt like a little kid when stepping in tracks for the first time in my neighborhood. I like to try new hot chocolate and cookie spots about town which is always a treat

Rosie

i just bought a steam cleaner and i’m going to town on my oven

Kayla Daly

I relistened to the YWA OJ Simpson episodes and am watching the new Netflix series now. Wonder what will happen next...!

Anna Britton

this last year every time someone in my or my husband's family had a birthday we went yarn shopping and figured out a blanket pattern — I'm excited that this massive crochet project of 15+ handmade afghans is almost completed

Daniel

I preordered two new books coming out from my favorite local bookstore! (The third book in the Emily Wilde series by Heather Fawcett and the new Linda Holmes book Back After This)

Abigail Crawford

Seeing updates from your podcast makes me excited. It's always such a rooting moment to listen to you and your guest(s). Other than that I've finally ventured into making adult content in 2025. It feels more important than ever to be a queer artist and make visible queer art. Thank you for being you, Sarah. You beautiful, beautiful person.

Jaws Stone

Just looked it up, I need a spotty fish cardigan

Jenni Stewart

I make embroidery art and last night I had a shower thought that I need to turn the white denim jacket I never wear into a doodle jacket so that will be fun!

Lora Dailey

Oooh! 👀

Fallon X Gold

Have you read the book Ammonite by Nicola Griffith? It’s queer girl sci fi and it’s SO GOOD!!!

Courtney Minick

My partner and I are making all sorts of spring bikepacking plans. And they’re not into holidays either so I get to ignore the candy holiday coming up!

Kate McDonald

Omg. I just got a bird feeder with a camera and I’m looking forward to stalking the shit out of it! Love this thread, thanks everybody 💗

Courtney Minick

I'm excited to celebrate the first valentines day with my incredible partner❤️

E

It’s all about the seeds for me too, I’m going to try winter sowing with milk jugs so I can get started now. Whenever things feel particularly dark I need things that are elemental to get me through

Jenni Stewart

Rialto, a late-90s Britpop band who were never as big as they should have been, but massive in Indonesia.

Frankie

Ooh, great question! Is your friend just looking for fiction recs?

KT

Great job recognizing a problem and getting help! That shit's tough and you did it! I hope this is part of the beginning of your upward trajectory.

Sugar Shoemaker

I am in the process of compiling all the recipes my kids love most so they can have them in a hard copy. In my handwriting. In a really pretty journal with really pretty pens.

Sue Hare

A friend of mine has a trans kid who has really been struggling lately, and I bought them some binders. I also wrote them a letter I’m going to mail today. I really hope it helps them.

Spookyboneboy

I love pole! I’m a transman and I used to do it a lot but I stopped because of weird gender feelings. I really missed it and recently decided to say screw it and started taking classes again. It’s brought me a lot of joy.

Spookyboneboy

I am excited to finish making my comfy new duvet (that doesn't smell like cat pee!), finish reading Any Other City by Hazel Jane Plante, start reading All The Answers by Michael Kupperman, and get my MRI done (and hopefully figure out how to start biking again once the ice melts!)

Grease Witherspoon

I'm teaching myself to bake, and using family birthdays as excuses to try new things too!

Laura Clowder

Congratulations!! That's a huge accomplishment!!

Laura Clowder

This week, a local theatre company I've worked with before asked me to stage manager their next FOUR plays. Its been my dream to be the go-to for a company for years, and I've finally maybe done it. Plus one of the shows is "Skater Girls" which is hella queer and has a nonbinary character, which is always exciting but in this climate is absolutely necessary for my soul.

Laura Clowder

I'm about 6 months away from submitting mine and can imagine the joy, relief and all. The biggest congratulations!!

Rosey

It's so lovely to read about your small and big sparks of joy! I am based in Berlin, Germany, and a wonderful moment I recently had was joining one of the big protests against the right-wing extremist party AfD and the conservative party's move to collaborate with them in parliament. It was so good to stand in the crowd and physically feel the presence of thousands of people who are just as angry about these developments and who share a more hopeful vision for our democracy that is based on principles of solidarity and human rights. One of my favorite moments was when activists started climbing lamp posts to tear down AfD posters, with the crowd cheering and whistling them on! Another one was the crowd collectively singing to each other to stand strong against fascism and far-right ideology. These moments have moved me deeply and reinforced my optimism that many people are working towards the same goal of contributing to the common good and a more just society. Anyways, thanks so much for your work, Sarah! You also reinforce that hope in me across international borders. ☺️ And to everyone who reads this, I am sending light and good energy your way! 🌱

K. W.

I’ve subscribed to Hallmark+. It’s a world where everyone is nice to each other.

Sandra Hetzel

This week I will be submitting the final version of my PhD thesis. This time three years ago I ordered a book (Brian Klaas's Corruptible) and told myself I could only read it once I had finished my PhD - I didn't expect it to take this long, but this week I am finally going to start reading it!

Fay Winfield

I’m taking pole fitness classes even though I’ve always been clumsy and not good at physical things. Progress is slow but its been helping me connect with my body more and in small ways I feel myself getting stronger. I’ve also started reading “ghengis khan and the making of the modern world” and his life is so surprisingly fascinating! Reading and moving my body feel like small things that connect me more to myself

Scarlet P

I've been getting really into cake decorating. My family is coming up with all sorts of reasons we need cakes so I have an excuse to make another one and play around.

Abby Self

I got my hands on a Jenny Kee's (Australian knitwear designer) 'Knits from Nature' pattern book. The cover page is the great barrier reef sweater which I am desperate to make - it is so cheerful and full of fish. I'm about to order the wool - and expect it will take years for me to actually finish it. But just knowing I will finish it one day makes me so happy. Please please share any beautiful, colourful knit artists who are brightening your knitting at the monent!

Rosey

This is my kind of nerdy fun!

Sugar Shoemaker

My little lemon tree that has been really struggling over the winter is finally growing new leaves!

Allison

Thank you for asking! You can check out our website. We've mostly Beena free resource but we're finding folks want more training than we can provide for free so we're expanding into courses in Niche Academy and I'm writing a book with the American Library Association www.storytimesolidarity.com

Kate Reynolds

Congratulations on your new kitties, so exciting!

Trisha

Oh, these sound super good! A friend of mine is planning a syllabus for a Canadian science fiction course. Do you happen to have any Canadian recommendations?

Kate Reynolds

Which band?? So exciting!

Trisha

My neighbor brought me a delicious cinnamon babka today, and I am very excited to eat more of it. I am excited about some upcoming baking/cooking that I am planning on doing soon - cereal flakes, pretzels, sourdough rye, chocolate sourdough, and various soups. My recent comfort thing to watch has been Tasting History with Max Miller on YT (I know the platform sucks but would definitely recommend him - he also has a cookbook that you can find at the library). I’m in Asheville, NC and my favorite local seed catalog/seller is Sow True Seed. Sending everyone lots of love and a big hug. You are not alone 💚 Thank you for this, Sarah!

Trisha

I found my first ever fossil on the beach - an ammonite ☺️

Fallon X Gold

I would love it if you could do a kind of bonus episode on the opposite of tradwifedom. This is something I have struggled for years with- ive been making bread most of my life, gardening, canning, etc but the rise of the tradwife aesthetic is something that sometimes makes me resentful of activities that i actually love when i can't get space from the conservative takeover. I planted almost 50 strains of tomato seeds yesterday and thats been my weekend delight.

erica perras

My 8.5 month old has started babbling consonants and clapping her hands! And my 4-year-old loves to use funny phrases like “let’s get crackin’!” and “don’t freak out!” Oh, and I made a double batch of brown butter chocolate chip cookies last week and froze a bunch of dough balls so that we can have cookies whenever.

Kate Duffy

i am lovingggg 1.6

lily h

Going to take a writing class about grief soon! Also looking forward to applying to a new job & continuing to read. Also buying a keyboard and/or omnichord!!

Sarah

I've never thought about the yarn providing color like flowers. I love this and will definitely be thinking of it while I do my fiber crafts.

Brianne Polito

Oh my goodness! This sounds amazing!!!

Brianne Polito

I think more to the point, these books remind me that I have the power to take care of people in my community, and they motivate me to do that.

KT

Oh 💯. I've paused the apps and check in every once in a while. I miss it when it was just "look at my silly dog/cat" stuff

Brianne Polito

I’m taking a class on abolition this semester, and learning about the history of prison justice—which horrifying—lets me see how people have resisted and taken care of one another even in the most desperate of circumstances. Highly recommend El Jones’ “Abolitionist Intimacies” and Orisanmi Burton’s “Tip of the Spear” for anyone who is interested. They are heady reads, especially Burton, but very much worth your time.

KT

I finally finished a book that I've been reading for months. Normally, I would've finished it within a few weeks of starting it but I was having a lot of trouble letting myself just be. I'm really looking forward to tackling my TBR (at this point) mountain and rejoining book club and my local book store. I'm also going to an anime convention (Katsucon) with friends in the DC area this weekend and I'm really excited to get away. We're going to the drag show (I've always wanted to go to one!) and I'm going to try to get into the embroidery and crochet activities to get myself back into those hobbies. I miss them and want to feel creative again. There is so much joy to be found in finishing a project. We're also trying to get D&D restarted and that was always a joy. Lots of laughter from genuinely great and often goofy human beings. Banding together with my different fellowships is the only way to make it thru. I also have my dog, Ellie, who is my everything. Thanks for the thought exercise. I'm loving reading everyone's replies.

Brianne Polito

I write a story (an installment) every week and post it on Sunday. I know not many people read them, but I write them for me, and it is one of the few things keeping me going right now.

Phil M

Getting to the end of a kitchen reno is the best feeling ever!

Michelle Stavrou

My wife and I are in the run-up to our second Valentine's Day at our flower shop, Sweet Pea and Sage!

Gerald

I'm finishing my masters next month and starting work!! 🧡

clearsei

I saw Life of Pi last month! It was SO.GOOD. ❤️😭 I was worried the puppets might be goofy but they aren't at all and truly added so much to the performance. Enjoy!!

Rachel

One of my favourite bands from when I was a teen have got back together and are releasing their first album in 24 years AND I get to see them live! It’s unlocked so many teenage emotions for me, I barely know how to contain myself!

Frankie

I would love to learn more about this! 👀

Ugino

I think I'm falling in love. I met someone who checks boxes I didn't even know I had, who makes me feel like a goddess walking the earth. It's drowning out almost every other bad thing in my life.

Sara Urban

I finished making a (crochet) baby blanket for my oldest friend. It's the most difficult crochet project I've done to date and I'm pretty proud of it. So now I'm looking forward to picking my next craft project. I haven't decided what yet - more crochet? Knit? Perhaps try sewing again, now that I finally have a dedicated craft space and table? The possibilities!! I'm also getting over a cold and I'm actually so bored of sitting around (tired, sniffling, coughing) that I feel very motivated to get out and go for walks and/or get back to taking Zumba classes. 💃

Rachel

I made a fun collage last week from items around the house, and just met a dear friend for tiramisu lattes. Next up: making chicken stelline soup, then going to my night-shift job in a really well-run oncology unit. 💞

Rebecca Brothers

good for you and happy crocheting!

Ugino

what a delightful tradition haha

Ugino

I’ve had the worst year of my life last year so I booked a trip to visit my friends in NZ. Last time I visited was 2 years ago and it was such a reset for me.

Alexandra Starks

Love this thread! I have too many hard copies of books (which I know is not really a problem except that I live in a small condo with not enough storage), so this year I paused Book of the Month and promised myself I would only buy nonfiction books (they take me longer to read than the Libby loan time) from Barnes & Noble instead of places like Amazon. Well … a few weeks ago an independent bookstore opened in the next town over, so all of my non-accumulating plans are out the window because obviously I have to support it. I went for the first time on Friday and there are so many books I’ve had on my list that I want to read. I’m in trouble 😂 I signed up for the monthly membership. Even though it was during the workday, there were lots of people browsing, which was so encouraging. I hope we can all keep this bookstore here (especially since I live in a blue county in Pennsylvania).

Jen Leedom

I've been absorbing a lot of information and discourse about the Free Software and Open Hardware movements and dreaming about doing silly projects. It's just the right blend of crafty and political to keep me engaged in a fringe cause without feeling oppressively bleak about it. 3D printing is having a big Right to Repair/right to modify your stuff cultural moment right now and there's plenty of spicy discussion and history to dig into there, for anybody who enjoys hating capitalism in a slightly less stressful way while printing some rainbow fidget slugs.

Ugino

My Renaissance faire friends are having a medieval inspired feast next weekend at a friends place in Portland. We are all bringing different foods, lots of them are actually medieval recipes and we’re going to spend 2 days eating and drinking and playing games.

Leah Dooley

That new update is pretty tight!

James Hicks

I’ve been reading all the books by Don Miguel Ruiz, which has helped me with being reflective, curious, and compassionate during this time. I’m also super into the Finch app to help my adhd brain to take care of myself.

Kate Naomi Aldridge

I moved into a new house in January and I'm kept busy by various house projects and decorating. I am also excited about seeds, or at least plants. I'm planning to (eventually) rewild my yard and have mostly native wildflowers to provide a haven for wildlife. I also got a new cat last week and I am excited to see her settle in and get comfortable. :3

Beth Zyglowicz

I have been listening to the cast recordings for years, so I'm stoked to finally be seeing it in person!

Carrie

I just switched college majors from Accounting to History with the plan to eventually work in higher education! It's a huge (scary) switch, but I'm currently taking history and government courses that are genuinely some of my favorite classes ever. Learning about how we got here and what we've gone through before as humans is so satisfying and is definitely keeping me sane right now.

Bandilism Music

I've started logging out of all my social media when I'm not using them. I'm realizing now much mental energy constant alerts were taking up during the day and how much freer I feel to just be a little bored sometimes 😃

Taylor Sublett

Too early to start seeds up here in the Great White North but after a long three months I've finally got a spark (seed?) of inspiration to be able to write again, so when it's hard to drag myself out of bed in the morning, I'm now thinking of my characters and all the new, exciting action-movie style peril I can get them into (and, sure, out of . . . eventually.)

Stephanie Smith

We put out bird feeders for the first time and have been enjoying watching them. I’m a dedicated baker and knitter and both of those things have been bringing me deep comfort. I just got a new cookbook yesterday called Milk Bread and Mooncakes and I’m looking forward to learning more about Chinese baking.

Juliet Nusbaum

We would LOVE to have chapters all over

Em Hawk

Seedlings! I started my seeds outside in milk jugs in December. Soon as they get to sets of leaves I’m planting. Can’t wait to garden.

Karan Conover

You’ll love Hadestown

Karan Conover

I'm getting married at the end of next month after six quite difficult years health wise for both my partner and me - while things are extremely spooky and stressful on a macro scale right now, on a micro one I am just very excited to have one very big party with all of my loved ones in one place ❤️

Eve Moriarty

I work in Social Services, and it's been a long held belief that you can't pour from an empty pitcher. I'm filling most of my non-work time with creative pursuits, like planning my garden, working on performance art, but also.. I just discovered that I live 45 minutes from an amazing fine art museum that is free to the public through the end of March. Just getting to see amazing art has been sustaining me. Going back next week to explore the Impressionist rooms!

Stella Blue

Someone on Dan Savage’s podcast called it a threelationship and I love that.

Nathan de Rover

I've got some live theater in my future! I'm seeing Hadestown next weekend and Life of Pi in March. Can't wait to be overcome by gorgeous puppetry.

Carrie

this sounds fun

Ugino

My wife loves all things fiber arts. I told her the name of your group and she said she might steal it if she ever starts a new group!

Nathan de Rover

i have been picking up more books lately and recently read a new favourite book (hands of the emperor by victoria goddard)! i feel like i have fallen out of the habit of reading so it's really nice and it's a good way to stay off the internet.

Haiz

ooh do you know where you'll be publishing it?

Ugino

i’ve been getting into baking and i tried a new recipe for fluffernutter cookies and they are very delicious

Henry Shearer

this sounds like it has IDEAL vibes

Ugino

I live in Florida :/ but I have a wonderful book club at a local independent book shop where I get to be in my own little bubble of non-conservative folks, discussing books and eating cookies. Attending every month makes me happy

Katherine Kennedy

Real cold take here, but I’m always excited to spend time with my silly little dog, Bruce :)

Alexis

I absolutely love growing luffa! It is the best exfoliator. Also I learned how to ski this week and I'm so excited to keep building the skill.

CC

I started a swordfighting class last month and it's so good to get out of the house and go do something fun and nerdy with other nerds once a week. I'm excited about learning new skills and making new friends! And it gets out some of the anxious energy.

Luna Curlypaws

I'm taking an Indian classical dance class (Bharatanatyam) for adults! I took classes intermittently as a kid, either when an instructor happened to live in the town where I was born/raised in the US or while visiting India, but was never able to continue it consistently. It's so satisfying to be able to come back to it.

Anjali

Last December my kitchen was gutted and has slowly been being rebuilt and tomorrow should be the finish line with getting the sink and dishwasher hooked up!

I'm excited for the fiber arts group we've started organizing in Eugene called The Commuknits Party. Community is keeping us grounded *Open invite to anyone in town who is needing leftist community rn. IG commuknits_party_eugene

Taught myself to crochet earlier this winter. In Minnesota, any hobby you can do in a recliner while watching the golden girls or food network is helpful. The colorful yarn is substitute until flowers season arrives.

I’m wrapping up knitting a sweater with halibuts on it!

I'm writing an academic paper about Feminist Care Ethics and how it would be really useful in application to transnational feminist translation studies. Maurice Hamington's Revolutionary Care (2024) is an accessible and inspiring introduction to Care Ethics. Also, had 1200 red cards made for my students, friends and neighbors to have on hand if ICE harasses them: https://www.ilrc.org/red-cards-tarjetas-rojas

I have been writing again after a long time of not, and it’s been really wonderful to share new poems with friends. I’m also very close to finishing a quilt I’ve been working on for over a year, and am really grateful for my small-town bakery job (my mom is my boss! Which wouldn’t work for everyone but I love it).

Maya Rohr

I just found out I’m going to get to see my brother and little niece (who have been out of the country for 3+ years) in May!

I work in senior care and my Palestinian resident loves our Coloring Hour. Today he very excitedly brought me his “Coloring Palestine” book to use with the other residents 🥹 we spent 5 minutes looking through every page and talking about his childhood memories. I love him so much!

Our spring bulbs are all sprouting.

Picking up the habit of writing to pen pals after a long hiatus. It's a genuine joy to find a hand written letter in the mailbox at the end of the day!

I hate that they're in this position but I'm so glad they have people like you supporting them

A ceramic project that has been an uphill battle for a year came into fruition last night. We kept troubleshooting and it finally paid off. Also, learning how to play the ukulele and plan on learning hammer dulcimer later in the year.

Cara Erickson

Thank you, it's so weird that I'm having amazing things happen during such a horrifying time. But I am starting to believe that kindness is more powerful than hate 💜

Congratulations! As it so happens, today is my unBirthday! I celebrate it every year. My voluntary hysterectomy was one of the best decisions I've ever made in so many ways I feel like my life began after I got this surgery. My way of observing this wonderful personal holiday is to find a mug I really don't like and to break it, making room for one I do. As the art festivals open up later in the year, I will keep my eye out for a new beautiful ceramic mug to replace it to complete the ritual. It's metaphorical for me to do this, but also leading up to my surgery, I accidentally broke about four mugs, even though I'm not usually clumsy. Because I was really nervous about them cancelling the surgery last minute, and that's how it manifested. So it's kind of humorous. Anyway, may your surgery go smoothly and your recovery be swift.

I’m refinishing a dresser I bought last year. It’s about 100 years old and a little beat up. It’s been very meditative to sand and oil it and gradually see the wood come to life. As I’m working I’m thinking about the trees it came from and the people who built this and the people who used it before me (the guy who sold it to me told me it came from a bed and breakfast, so it had many visitors). I’m so excited to put it back into my room but I also feel like I have all the time in the world to keep buffing and finishing it, and by doing so I’m showing my care and appreciation for this object and the world.

My roommate moved out last month & my partners (yay polyam!!) and I are redecorating the empty bedroom into a video game/board game/crafting cozy nook!!

I am fresh out of a four year relationship and trying to get excited for my new freedom. I'm also waiting to hear back from grad school and on the verge of even more huge changes. I'm holding onto the cozy things that make me happy for dear life: watching a lot of old seasons of Drag Race, waiting for the cold to let up while collaging out of old National Geographics :)

Standing by and fighting with my immigrant neighbors and coworkers! Making sure everyone I know REALLY knows their rights when it comes to ICE. If they don't have a warrant signed by a judge, don't open that door! Doing things and having conversations that can have real, life-saving impacts is crucial. We keep us safe is more than a chant ❤️

Chaos Baby

I got the go-ahead to run a karaoke fundraiser for my local pride and I'm now really excited planning it all and drawing my terrible posters for it 😁🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Last year, I signed up to be a CASA volunteer. When children are removed by DCS, it starts a very long process where the parents have to comply with things like drug treatment, parenting classes, etc. It’s all a legal process and DCS has legal representation. So do the parents. But the children do not. A CASA meets with the children and develops a relationship with them. We advocate for them to the court to make sure they they have a voice and that their needs are being met. Anyway, I took my first case a year ago. The father is a meth addict. The mother is a victim of his physical and psychological abuse. One of the children even tested positive for meth exposure. In the year since, the father has been in prison and the mom is absolutely killing it. The boys are doing as well as can be expected and they are now home with mom. The case is moving toward closure in a couple of months and as long as the dad stays away, the boys might turn out okey. Generational poverty is a real thing and nothing that is happening will solve that, but it’s been wonderful to see a mother move heaven and earth to better herself and her kids.

I found a new coffee shop that is actually kid friendly called Llama's Corner and I'm enjoying a delicious cinnamon mocha. There is a sign on the wall called "Llamaste."

Erin Lavitt

This is fantastic! Congratulations!

I’m excited to try new medication for my narcolepsy that could be truly life changing.

I made Douglas Fir mugolio in May when the cones were young and just got around to straining it, I'm excited for all the cookies I'm going to make with it. I'm in Tacoma WA and an going to Williamsburg VA this week with a friend so we can be nerds at all the museums. When I get back I'm going to turn over my garden for spring and start seeds in the greenhouse with another friend. I love the my greenhouse has turned into the community greenhouse for my framily circle. I also started school in January to become a diesel technician so I can work more tangibly in my community. I'm in my 40's so back to school has been *an experience.* Six quarters feels like a long time, but I know it is and really isn't. I know shit's on fire, but giving myself these glimmers has helped me not fall back into despair. I spent time in a facility in January 2021 for my own good. It was *the worst* I learned that I'm more capable and loved than I thought I ever could be. They won't take that from me.

I joined a knit along this month and I am in the process of knitting my very first sweater! I don't really have the words to describe what knitting means to me, but I think it's very similar to your cabbages.

My cats are bringing me so much love and joy at the moment. My life currently feels like everything is being thrown at my little family at once and my anxiety is off the scale - but my cats, and one in particular, never stop giving me cuddles and kisses and nudges. Goose is my tripawd cat who used to be a stray. He now spends all day every day by my side or on my lap kissing me and showing me all his gratitude for saving him - even though he has saved me 10x over since then. I'm also excited that summer is coming because I need warmth and sunshine! And I'm grateful to you for your podcasts that allow me to sleep and keep my anxiety at bay. (Especially the episodes with Blair Bravermen which I have listened to SO many times!)

Maddy Dilley

Im on track to graduate college with an associates in natural resources this spring! Also might finally get my driver's license

Getting married to the love of my life at the end of the month with our amazing daughter, and closest friends and family in attendance ❤️

I'm excited to get back into writing. I've been on a 2 month mental health hiatus, but I can feel the creative energy returning. I hope I can fuel this into finishing my first novel this year!

I've recently incorporated an educational organization I accidentally founded (long story, autism is why) and we're launching all these cool courses for education workers. We're now making enough that I can hire an assistant and it's amazing being able to help helpers help. Our courses are about music but we get to sneak in so much kindness and inclusion. Like having a Hawai'ian teacher for our ukulele course who teaches us to call it the ookalele to help preserve the Hawai'ian language just a little bit

I started a book club with my friends. It's just a little thing we're trying to do every month. This month we're having a book club brunch and reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.

My weaving guild is really getting me through it. This year we're studying doubleweave and I've gotten way more into it than I thought I would

At the trans gym I go to, I am using heavier weights this week than last week, that made me happy and excited. I love being around strong queer people

Sending so much support, Sarah. I am sure I speak for all of us when I say we share your sentiments. On the seed topic, our public library held a very successful seed exchange yesterday! How cool is that? // But what I mainly want to share that brought joy is .... our community (and many throughout the nation) had Night to Shine on Friday night. It's a prom for people with special needs (and I use that term b/c they do -- I totally respect that there are different thoughts on it...). Our community's had occurred for roughly 10 years, then the sponsoring group declined to do it ... announcing that about 33 days before it was supposed to happen. People came together in INCREDIBLE ways and it happened. We "buddies" got paired with guests. And all I can say is the 100% purity and joy as the buddies and volunteers cheered for the guests as they arrived on the red carpet (silent cheers for sensory needs folks too) ... and the way the evening unfolded (dressing up, dancing, karaoke, limos, party bus, animal therapy ... the list goes on and on) and every participant being crowned king and queen was just soooooooooo affirming. For a few hours, I could forget the sh*tshow that most of the world is right now. // Also, my darling grandson's laugh. <3

I’m excited to start gardening! My wife started Vyvanse last year and ended up building us a beautiful back deck and a ton of raised garden beds. We ended up growing sunflowers that reached 15ft tall and are both excited to grow more plants this year!!

I live in an intentional community life- sharing with people with special needs in Scotland. Life here is cold and frosty, tiring and exciting. January lasted around 2,5 years and February is already a lot. The first snow drops are out now and the first patches of wild garlic in the fields are popping out ♥️

Mayara Pereira

I’m a queer woman who owns a small press/print shop in Florida. I’m currently planning a print fest for later this year. We will celebrate all things analog print: letterpress, riso, zines, screen printing, indie publishing, everything. I’m very excited!

Elyse

I'm excited about organising this year's Beginner beekeeping course and bringing a new school on board to teach beekeeping to pupils.

Beth Bruce

I work at a used book/records/media shop and I find joy there with all my wonderful colleagues. We love sharing things with each other. This week I was telling them about watching obscure James Spader movies, one of which featured the Jim Carroll Band (much to my surprise and delight)

Brooke Opie

I am excited about the “Anti-Despair” organizing happening in Cincinnati right now. We just held a resource fair/tabling event with a bunch of mutual aid orgs around the city looking to recruit volunteers, and over 500+ people showed up! And there have been teach-ins and book clubs that communities are participating in, too. I’ve never seen so many people in the city so eager or organize at the local level!

Playing the Bohnzana card game with friends. The song “Safari” by The Breeders. Joe Abercrombie’s book “The Blade Itself”. Patti Smith’s book “Year of the Monkey” is very good, but it made me sad, so I don’t know if that counts. And…I haven’t slipped on the ice all winter!

Trish Bronte

I’m finding it in my house plants that I’m taking meticulous care of. I’m also excited by the prospect of making some raised beds this year to grow things that bring me joy or that help pollinators. I’m also excited for movies. Movies that I share with friends and family and things like film festivals. I’m volunteering for a local horror festival and I’m so excited to see what that brings

Heather Jochens

I’m excited about the ways I’ve been working in my community, specifically in helping teach local students about engineering and my industry. I do a lot of outreach through a local educational nonprofit and I’ve had some great opportunities in the first month of this year that I’ve been really proud of. This one in particular: https://www.wtap.com/2025/01/24/bb2c-hosts-discover-engineering-day-marietta-college/

I hired a team of cleaners to eep clean my apartment on Wednesday. I've been living in a depression pit for years.

I volunteer at an amazing cat shelter where I get to be hands on as part of the medical care team. That is what gets me out of bed during this stressful time.

Tangelene Ramsay

I'm going to Anchorage to watch Q head out on the Iditarod trail in 3 weeks. Keeping focused on that trip and meet-up with new and old friends is helping me get through *all this*.

I've recently made some new friends through my local Silent Book Club, and am in the process of starting another chapter!

I'm excited to make my little snacks.

Not even gonna lie: I started pelvic floor physical therapy a couple of weeks ago and as a perimenopausal woman, I have a feeling it’s gonna be life-changing. I’m also loving that Bruno Mars/Rosé song “Apt.” I’m a little late to that game and it’s not my usual type of music, but it’s bouncy and fun and makes me feel great. And I need that right now.

Callie Michaels

You all make me happy at YWA 🫂

I'm excited to get my hysterectomy at the end of the month! It's something I've wanted since I was 12 and it's feels unreal to finally make it happen. I'm also excited to make all of my coworkers little crochet gifts while I recover.

Sasha Georges

While I don’t love the NFL, I am excited to host some new friends for the Super Bowl this evening

Maggi Reedel

I'm on the board of a local queer organization that meets once a month. I just got the rest of the board to agree to meet twice a month. We need Community now more than ever. I'm happy I can do something concrete to help my community.
