A Christmas Carol audiobook for you, Staves 1 & 2
Added 2023-12-03 03:25:48 +0000 UTC
The holidays are a weird, fun, horrifying, heartwarming, exciting, exhausting, beautiful, miserable time. So we thought we'd make an audiobook for you. Here, I'm reading the first two staves--up through the journey to Christmas past--of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol for you (beautifully edited by Miranda Zickler and produced by Carolyn Kendrick). Expect the next ghosts in a couple of weeks. (This section is your November bonus, albeit a couple of days late--Santa hit some fog.)
I grew up watching the George C. Scott-as-Scrooge version of this story, which my parents taped off KOIN on Christmas Eve, 1989 (which means my Christmas memories also involved watching, year after year, news of the ouster of Ceaușescu and Noriega. Which, now that I think of it, seems pretty fitting). So what I'm saying is, if you want to make me cry out of pure nostalgia in about ten seconds, play this TJ Maxx ad for me. (No, it's never, ever the same place twice.)
I hope you enjoy this special project--I've been wanting to make a public domain audiobook for you for a while, so please let me know if you have more book ideas for 2024. And no matter what your month and your holiday season and your New Year's are like, thank you for being there with us through all of 2023. We couldn't have done it without you. I couldn't have done it without you. You're everything. We're just Ken.
Love,
Sarah
My three year old is currently obsessed with A Christmas Carol, I remembered today that you recorded this and we are currently snuggling on the couch and listening together. Thank you for this gift!!

Or - who in the Levin family do we have to pay how much to get you access to his books with a John Boehner-esque audio book break at the end of each chapter (except instead of ripping Ted Cruz you rip the patriarchy in general — or rip both!).

The muppets are how I was introduced to this story, and I refuse to believe there are any other versions, but a narration done by you was something I didn’t know I needed until now.
A tremendous Thank You for the joy you and your contributions bring because they are truly a gift to so many of us, especially me. You’ve got a great team & I appreciate all the hard work. 💚
Happy holidays!

Our tape of the George C Scott version included the big blue IBM commercials, so I always feel that nostalgia. Watching on a DVD just isn't the same.

I was just thinking about how, for those of us from the taped-off-the-tv era, old commercials are as crucial to the holiday experience as the shows themselves. My mom taped "Muppet Family Christmas" when it aired in 1987 and due to hundreds of subsequent watches, Christmas will always make me want to grab on to that m&m feeling ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjalXr8JwW0) and wear oshkosh b'gosh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ncQD--dUuo).

Thank you for doing this! My teacher read A Christmas Carol to us in sixth grade, probably over the course of a week or so. I remember we got to spread out and get comfortable. I also grew up w the George C Scott version.
It’s been a really hard year for me, and this is bringing me a lot of joy. Many many thanks, and merry Christmas to you Sarah!

I love this! Like the perfect Christmas gift it’s something I never would have thought to ask for. Next, maybe do some Edgar Allen Poe short stories? I’ve been watching Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix and really want to read or reread some Poe soon

I love public domain audiobooks! And moreover, screw the misogynist apple podcast review haters, I have always enjoyed your voice so much.
I got an MP3 player and a flip phone to remove distractions, so I've been listening to Anna Karenina from librivox while I work in the printmaking studio. I listened to Dracula this way, and Jane Eyre, plus lesser known titles like He Fell In Love With His Wife (charming little fake/pretend relationship fic from the 1870s) or The Art of Bookbinding: A Practical Treatise, which is as nerdy and fun as it sounds (there are tables! Tables of old recipes for chemicals and stuff, and they use all the old alchemy names for things!) ... In short, there are a lot of good old books, and we are in constant need for them to be read aloud. (You should put this on librivox if you haven't already. They have a great library.)

This is just brilliant Sarah! I always say that your voice is part of what makes YWA such a comforting podcast -- even when tacking non-conforting topics (or Flowers in Attics!). This really is your medium, and Dickens is a perfect vehicle!

Can’t wait to listen to this - I only read it for the first time last year. Was surprised by how short it is, and how like and not like it the adaptations are. Scrooge is much more self aware - but it’s also quite funny. Wanted to comment on the cattle mutilation episode. Brit here. Horse ripping is still a thing that people worry about in the county side. Some people out there enjoy abusing animals - although maybe people’s fear is part stoked by urban legend. However people doing nasty things to horses makes the papers often enough. But “ripping” - you already knew this verb! Jack the Ripper… the Yorkshire Ripper…

Haven't read it since school. It's far more sinister without the singing cabbages.
Great fun - thanks, Sarah!

This is very cool. Please consider The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett for a future book pick! It has a hold on my heart almost as strong as the '90s film adaptation that made me a Colin Firth fan decades before I would realize I knew him as a child.
