Experiments on Stockings
Added 2017-01-23 14:56:29 +0000 UTCIn the past weekend we took some time experimenting with approaches to depict stockings of higher Denier value.
Conventional method - base color map with tilable normal and roughness detail maps will inevitably cause Moire pattern, which is devastating to visual verisimilitude. 4K maps, on the other hand, impose a heavy burden to performance, especially for translucent objects such as stockings.
We are still weighing the options.

2017-01-24 15:04:30 +0000 UTCWe have been doing stuff with PBR all the time. Shaders including layered detail maps cause moire pattern at close look unless a proper draw distance is set.

2017-01-24 13:37:53 +0000 UTCThe 'right' way to do it would also be the 'hard' way: use a dedicated shader to deal with anisotropic non-lambertian surfaces like fine fabrics. A coarser texture can then be layered on this to provide the 'grain' of the fabric, while the shader determines its response to light. The problem is that this is a PBR technique, so imposes the requirements for verisimilitude on all other textures present in order not to look out of place.
