__________
Miguno, a hyena, and Alice, a lemur, were boarding the train for different reasons. The two eighteen-year-old students of Cherryton Academy had been out quite late: Miguno was auditioning to be in a local play, and Alice had been at a tutoring prep group. And so the two went on the train, each entering from opposite sides. Both were heading back to Cherryton for some well deserved rest.
Thanks to the lateness of the day, nobody was in the car the two of them were in. Miguno sat on the left side of the car, and Alice sat on the right side. Miguno found himself glancing over at the lemur all the way on the other side of the train. She looked cute, and that made him curious about her. And she looked very familiar . . .maybe he had seen her around school before, a few times? She was vaguely familiar, but not very.
He considered going over and sitting across from her, try to make conversation. Would that be weird, though? Maybe it would be weird. And he didn’t want to scare her at all, so he remained in his seat.
Alice shifted around uncomfortably in her chair, clutching her schoolbooks to her chest. This train was old, and the seats were not very modern. Steel edges were all around, and she was trying not to get her clothing caught in them. Regardless of that distraction, she found herself looking over at the hyena across from her in the train. Was he . . . staring at her? That was a little strange, she had to admit. Maybe he liked her? She was too shy to go talk to him on her own, so she shyly looked away, and resumed her shifting.
The train entered a tunnel. As Alice moved about, trying to get into a more comfortable position, she cut herself on a sharp edge of the seat, cutting her thigh and drawing blood.
Miguno had been quietly watching the girl across from him on the train, glancing over at her from time to time, not trying to be creepy. But as he looked over at her, his nose caught the smell of blood, and his eyes widened.
Immediately, instinct took over his senses. The hyena sprang from his seat and charged toward the lemur, barring his fangs.
Upon seeing this, Alice jumped from her chair, startled by his action. But before she could say anything, the hyena pinned her against the wall. Her schoolbooks went flying out of her hand, and landed on the floor of the train. She let out a startled cry, and looked up at her attacker.
Another scream left her mouth as she stared at him. The hyena had a dark look on his face, which clouded his eyes and made him all the more menacing. His fangs were enormous, and he was clearly drooling—drooling over her! She whimpered, waiting for the predator to get it over with.
Miguno smiled down at his prey, licking his lips.
/Eat her/, his instincts whispered. /Feed on live prey, as you were meant to do!/
He leaned down, sniffing his delicious meal—
—but at that moment, the train left the tunnel, the two of them saw each other’s faces.
Miguno’s eyes widened as he stared into the lemur’s eyes. In that moment, he realized what he was about to do, realized he was doing something awful to another living being, and he returned to himself.
Alice stared up at the hyena. She watched as the dark look on his face slowly went away, and his eyes became unclouded. But she wasn’t out of the woods yet. Was he still going to eat her?
Miguno released the lemur and stumbled backward, currently in shock. Was he really about to kill and eat another individual? It almost felt as if he didn’t have control of his body, that it acted on its own . . . and that terrified him.
Alice stood there, staring at the hyena, unable to move. Her body had completely frozen up; she was too scared to do anything but wait for her attacker’s next move. She watched him carefully, waiting for him to pin her against the wall again.
A moment later, the train stopped: it had reached its destination. Miguno couldn’t take it anymore, and he said, “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!” to the lemur. After that, he quickly made his exit, and left the train.
Alice watched the hyena go, and once he was gone, a sigh of relief left her. She was alive. She hadn’t been eaten. Thank goodness.
Miguno ran through the train station, trying to escape that awful encounter. He couldn’t believe what he had almost done. He wanted to get away from it—he /had/ to get away from it.
He hoped he wouldn’t see the lemur again. Because if he did, he would have a lot of explaining to do, and plenty of apologies to make. No, it was better if the two of them never saw each other again.
Alice finally snapped out of her stupor and managed to move again. She picked up her schoolbooks and dashed off of the train before it could keep moving—she had to get back to Cherryton’s campus. As she walked she reflected on the day’s events.
A hyena had just tried to eat her, likely because his instincts had taken over. But once he saw her face, he retreated, and even apologized before leaving the train. What had triggered his instincts in the first place. . .?
She looked down at her thigh, where she had cut herself on her seat, and immediately realized what had happened. The hyena must had smelled her blood, and been taken over by his instincts! That had to be it, right?
She sighed and kept walking, looking forward to her destination.. This was enough excitement for one day—she just wanted to go to her dorm room.
Only time would tell if Miguno and Alice would see each other again. . .
