Creating B&MJ art with Bridget and Jason

Hello Traxians!

Ever wonder about the process that goes on when it comes to our resident artist Jason Martian creating artwork for the Bridget and Mary Jo releases? Hot on the heels of last week's She Gods of Shark Reef B-movie riff, I asked Bridget and Jason to walk us a bit through the process. Here's what they had to say...

Jason:

Each piece of art starts with a concept or two (or three), each sketched out to get a rough idea of how it might look as a final "poster." Alterations are made during the sketch phase until a solid concept is approved.

Bridget likes to collaborate throughout the creative process from concept to sketch to colors. I find her to be a great collaborative partner, offering great ideas and positive feedback.

Bridget:

Jason and I have a pretty simple collaboration process. He's a talented artist and I'm not so I trust him :)

The following is a recreation of the conversation we had while he created the Poster for She Gods of Shark Reef. (slightly edited)

(Email from Jason): If you have any ideas already bubbling for She Gods Of Shark Reef, poster please feel free to share and we can get a good concept going. It's such a great title I want to see the film.

(Phone call from Bridget): (I hate typing emails that are more than a sentence, it takes me forever)

We look at posters from the original movie on line together.  While chatting we decide to use the Bridget and Mary Jo logo heads as characters. The original posters for the movie were lurid and we want to make it playful. I tell Jason that the title is much better than the film.

(Email from Jason): You are right...it's pretty cut and dry. Here's my first sketch. We could continue sketching more or we could change the concept. I also drew a different rendition of the tiki statue, one that looks a little more surprised or scared, and options for poses.

(Email from Bridget): I like the mean face on the tiki statue. Keep going with the concept.

(Email from Jason): (sends an inked sketch of the concept)

(Email from Bridget):  I like it!! Could MJ be holding a coconut drink or be doing the hang ten thing with her right hand?

(Email from Jason): How's this?

I tried sketching out her hand holding a coconut drink or mai tai but the "hang ten" works better.

(Email from Bridget): Yes! I like it

(Email from Jason): Okay, I'll get to coloring!

(Email from Jason): (Jason sends amazing, funny colorful drawing)

Here's an update. I went with some colors from the classic poster. What do you think?

(Email from Bridget): LOVE IT!

And there you have it! Another aspect of the funnest job in the world!

Thank you Patrons of Patreon for all the RiffTrax love!

We used to do more of a "podcast" style talk with them. Lately it's been kind of hectic over here. But I will ask if they are open to doing some more real soon!

Happy shark is super cute 😊

This was really interesting and fun to read through and see how the idea formed and changed. Jason is a terrific artist and, having met him at a Live show in Nashville, I know that he is also a super nice guy. Just like everyone else from RiffTrax that I have ever met.

Are we gonna get any Talkin' RiffTrax for Mary Jo and Bridget riffs?
