Happy Friday, Traxians!
Erik here with a little peek behind the curtain at an extended version of the trailer for our upcoming Live Show! It features ALL of the jokes that were recorded, including several that didn't make it into the 30- or 20-second versions (the 20 is still a work in progress - more on that later) but which we wanted to immortalize here on Patreon.
Funny story: the first line from Keanu in this is a great line, and the trailer actually got approved with it intact! However, since we're trying to keep things somewhat "acceptable for general audiences" with regards to the trailer, we decided to send them the corrected version we posted a little while earlier.
Back when the Kickstarter was still in full swing, I mentioned to the writers that having a trailer with some jokes would be a really good way of illustrating what we do, for newcomers to the Kickstarter who maybe have heard of us. (That kind of thing still happens fairly frequently!)
I also wanted to update the "campaign video" (the one in the main body of the Kickstarter) with jokes integrated into it, as this would help with this aforementioned "What is RiffTrax?" issue. Since Kickstarters cannot have their main text or video updated after the project ends, I wanted to make sure we had at least a joke or two included before that happened.
So I sent out the request via email. It seemed like the timing might not work out because of Kevin traveling, but even so, he thought he'd be able to do something with his portable audio rig that he'd happened to bring along with him. And thank goodness he did!
The writers were able to scrub through the Point Break source movie, flagging some "iconic" moments and scenes that would allow people to identify the movie pretty quickly, to which they could write some "trailer lines" - jokes that may or may not make it into the final version, but which will let us cut together a video trailer / proof of concept, if you will.
Since Mike was unavailable, all three guys recorded some jokes. We've done this in the past where each riffer reads the same jokes, but given the somewhat compressed timeline, we just kept it simple this time around.
Lastly, we still needed some voiceover, and we've had Bridget Nelson do this the last couple of times - but with time of the essence, we had Kevin handle that aspect. For that reason we decided to not use Kevin's lines in the final trailer, to avoid confusion. (Hearing the same voice for the VO as the jokes can definitely cause audience confusion, which doesn't help in such a time-constrained format.)
After a handful of reviews and revisions between our video editor Casey June, our CEO, and the writers/riffers, we finally ended up with the 30-second version that we posted previously. That included some re-recording of a couple of lines and several audio tweaks.
And while we really wish we could have kept Keanu's first line from the movie in, we're glad we can at least share these "fun variations" with you all.
