Hangin' Out with RiffTrax: Mispronunciations (video)

On Wednesday, January 25th, we had a special Hangin' Out with RiffTrax where our writers and riffers - Mike, Kevin, Bill, Sean, and Conor - were asked to pronounce one of several frequently-mispronounced words, and in the spirit of Improve Your Pronunciation, a discussion about each word was had. It was a lot of fun, and our Super and Ultra Traxians had the chance to ask questions live during the stream. The recorded video of the full event is now available to all. Enjoy!

I've lived in Japan for around 12 years now and can tell you you're STILL saying "karaoke" wrong, though you're getting very close! The word itself is a mashup (or portmanteau if you will) of both a Japanese and an English word. The Japanese part is 'kara' which you're saying correctly as 'kahrah' ( written 空 and means 'empty', also used in paid parking displays here to show there's spaces available) and the English part 'oke' is the first part of the Japanese pronunciation of 'orchestra' roughly as 'oh-kay-su-trah.' Kinda cool that 'karaoke' basically means 'empty orchestra' and invites to you fill in the missing part with your own voice, right? TL;DR - The correct pronunciation is more along the lines of "kah-rah oh-kay." Game, Set, Blandford-san! 👄 PS - How in the hell during all this did Mike get a pass on his pronunciation of sequel as "see-quell"? It doesn't even upset me, it's more like a warm blanket that I know I can count on to always be there. Just seemed like low-hanging fruit and was surprised it didn't get a nod. :)
