Talkin' RiffTrax: GUMBY: THE MOVIE

Hi Patreon. Mike Nelson here.

In this Talkin' RiffTrax, we discuss the very straightforward plot of Gumby: The Movie which of course is the old cliché about a slab of clay animated by an unseen Moon creature who is sent to Earth to deal with robotic loan sharks.

Of course, the newly arrived god-like being and his horse companion are immediately recognized by everyone (and no, they ARE NOT Doppelgängers) and Gumby (the god-like creature) is the lead guitarist of an already popular band. He amazes the clay beings and human beings (who live in an integrated society; the stark difference is never mentioned) with shredding and his bizarre transmogrifications... even though it appears to be a lesser talent of many possessed by all clay creatures.

Also, everyone can walk through walls. And into books, where the inhabitants of the books appear to be alive but trapped in a hell realm.

So not much to talk about, but we give it a go anyway. Enjoy!

You guys should riff a movie called "The Puppetoon movie" it's very weird too!

Rafael Lopes

We like making these little videos just for you folks, but maybe there's more we can be doing around them specifically? Always open to new ideas. Thanks for the feedback!

I have to note -- the content where you guys are talking about Gumby is SUBSTANTIALLY funnier than the actual RIFFs you did to Gumby -- these discussions should be more broadly monetized -- Mike's incredulity and the sheer insanity of DESCRIBING what actually happens in the film with attempts to make it make sense is hilarious.

Fun fact, Gumby: The Movie cost $2.8 million and only made $57k at the box office.

Just watched the Gumby movie tonight with the crew. Oh man, it was something. I still can't wrap my head around the red nets and the fact they can pass through anything.

Not today, sorry, but I'm planning something for next week. Stay tuned! - Erik

Is there a movie today?

I could listen to a podcast done by you three about anything, be it Gumby to the life of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Okay, I'll say something positive about 'Gumby 1': the sound effects, audio is usually good for a kids movie of that era.

Bort Ward

It IS sort of explained at the end of the movie that Lowbelly cries because Gumby was transforming... which also doesn't really make sense because that's a thing Gumby does when he's not performing?

Emma Schroeder

Having grown up watching Gumby on TV, his Thanos-like powers are unsurprising to me. Robot Rumpus was very mundane compared to, say, the lysergic-drenched Moon Trip (1956).

Mike Tripicco

Walking into books *was* part of the original children's show, but it was more like "Hey kids, you can go on adventures just by reading books!". And there wasn't this utter confusion between what's happening in the books vs what's happening outside the books. (that's how I remember it, at least. Although I was very young when I watched it, so maybe my memories have nothing to do with what actually happened)
