Casey quizzes Bridget and Mary Jo about Wonder Woman comics!

Greetings Traxians!

Casey June here, the lead video editor at RiffTrax.

To celebrate Bridget and Mary Jo releasing their second Just the Jokes riff - and their first dive into the world of Superhero movies - I asked them to join me on Zoom for a little Patreon Extra quiz. I asked true and false questions about the comic book origins of some of the things from the movie, and a good time was had by all!

To my fellow comic readers: despite doing my best with the lore, I know that I inevitably got some details wrong. Please have mercy on me.

Cheers, everyone - and enjoy! You can also download this video here.

Nothing I'm embarrassed about is showing nor do I own anything that I would be embarrassed to have - and I at least try to make sure nothing inappropriate is showing, and after this I will be doubly vigilant, lol. Thanks! :)

Casey! OMG I've learned from hard experience, you need to adapt your webcam's position to not show embarrassing items on your bedside table. :}

And tell Casey they are still running Fold-Ins inside Mad magazine. Lots of classic reprints in each issue along with new stuff. Most recent issue was spy-themed with lots of movie parodies, with my favorite being the one covering the first 8 James Bond movies.

Also of note, the first woman to write Wonder Woman comics, Joye Murchison Kelly, recently died at the age of 97. In 1944, faced with 4 comics all running Wonder Woman stories, the creator Marsden hired the 20 year old to write for the comics. She wrote for a few years and never received a credit which was common for ghost writers then. In 2018, she received the Bill Finger award at ComiCon, an award for writers mostly unknown by the public, and made her first convention appearance to receive it.

Fun stuff! I will disagree with Casey on one thing. I think Mary Jo would more enjoy "The Greatest Wonder Woman Stories Ever Told" more than a strictly modern thing. DC's "Greatest" books are especially cool because they show you the characters in each decade of the 20th century.

And the original Diana Prince was a nurse who was the same size and looked startlingly similar to Wonder Woman, who simply slipped on her whites and seamlessly into her career and life...

Ladies, YOU LOOK AMAZING! Bridget, the gray looks amazing on you! And Mary Jo, you are glowing! Thanks for the riff and for the laughs!

FUN FACT: In the original 1941 origin of Wonder Woman, she bought the identity of Diana Prince from the real Diana Prince who needed the money to go to South America to be with her fiancee. Marvin of Wendy and Marvin fame is the son of this real Diana Prince. (Wendy is the daughter of a detective who trained Batman...)

And of course the #1’s are misleading since Wonder Woman debuted in All-Star Comics #8 and Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27. Naming comic books after the characters was invented later!

HyperTurtle

I could watch MJ & B talk about anything! And Catwoman debuted about 3 years or so before Cheetah. She was in Batman #1.

Rifftrax needs a female version of their intro, something like the Andrew Sisters.

Yeah, Rucka was just fresh in my head because a few podcasts that I listen to were talking about Old Guard. I wasn't expecting the question and said the first name in my head that dealt with Diana's origin story - and Nicola Scott's art popped into focus too. The first thing I did when the recording stopped was hit myself and then make that graphic.

Fun story: I was at the Cinematic Titanic DVD launch party where Mary Jo, Joel, Frank, and Josh did stand-up with Trace as MC. Mary Jo did a bit where she recounted the death of Supergirl during Crisis on Infinite Earths(as in the "Pre-Crisis" note Casey needed to specify during the first question but oddly not the others). She covered what happened and the punchline was something about how it hit her really hard because her grandmother died the same way. During the autograph signings afterwards I excitedly asked her what she thought of Infinite Crisis, the sequel series from 20 years later that had concluded a year ago. She had no idea what I was talking about or its relation to her stand-up routine. I felt more awkward than I should have and didn't mention anything comic book-related to the other performers. I'm glad this video wasn't similarly uncomfortable.

HyperTurtle

This was fun! Nice save with the Gail Simone graphic reference. It's not like she's the ONLY person on the planet to have written both Wonder Woman AND for Riffrax or anything.
